The top picture is the Lotus gas-turbine powered car, the 56B. Both this car, and the earlier four-wheel-drive efforts, were not exactly aesthetically pleasing, were they?Worst Looking Formula 1 Car

Interestingly the pic of the P201 Stanley BRM driven by Bob Evans says Silverstone..... it would not have been the Grand Prix that year as they didnt run in it, although they were entered. They did however run at the International Trophy Race (NOn Championship) which is where the picture would have been taken. On that day Bob came in 10th, behind Tom Pryce in the Shadow-DFV.crazydude1992 wrote:Well, the 1975 BRM aint ugly in looks, but ugly in performance.Very slow(though it may have had something to do with poor drivers),not a single point...
BRM had by then become Stanley BRM's with Sir Louis Stanley having taken over the team to prolong their inevitable demiseand their main problem was one of money (lack of it). This led to the cars being unreliable, and basically if you dont finish races you dont score points.
Also bear in mind points were not so easy to win in those days, with only the top 6 finishers scoring, plus the entry list was much larger than the current 22, with the many 'kit car' teams that purchased a chassis from March, or a manufacturer, a DFV from Cosworth, a gearbox from Hewland, bunged a set of wheels on and went Grand Prix racing.Entries of over 30 entailed pre qualifying for many teams.
However the BRM , despite its apparent lack of pace still would have been the best sounding car on the grid, using their own totally in house 3.0L V12 engine

That I dont deny, but at that stage (the H16engine), BRM were consistently 1st or 2nd for many years in the WCC, certainly not the team that was running in 1975 with little hope of finishing races let alone win points. 1975 was the the wortcrazydude1992 wrote:No,their H16 V engine sounds the best of all BRM's
My point was that even when they were a mere shadow of themselves by 1975, they STILL had the best sounding engine with the V12. Obviously the H16 was long gone by then.
Actually as I pointed out in another thread discussing BRM, the best sounding engine of the modern era was quite possibly the BRM V16 1.5 litre supercharged, an engine that was built or designed back in the late 1940's, and revved to 12000 rpm, producing some 500 bhp.

This thing was such a horror in its brief Formula One life in 1966 that I can't even find any pictures that really do justice to its ugliness!
The Shannon Climax Godiva!
... it was such a phenominal success that Paul Emery took back his engine and they converted it to a Formula 3 car ... and it was still ugly!

So that's the Shannon? I've only seen two photos of that - one where it's quite blurred and grainy and another simply from the rear of the car.
That is one ugly, ugly car.

It only ever got as far as qualifying for the 1966 British GP..... Driven by Trevor Taylor he qualified it in 18th, ahead of a Cooper-Ferrari and a Lotus-BRM, alongside one Guy Ligier in a Cooper Maserati (Rindt and 'Seppi' were further up the grid in 7th and 11th in their Cooper-Mazzas...)
Not bad really, considering the 'Godiva' engine was already 12 years old, a (now stretched to 3L) left over from the Kieft 2.5L F1 project of the mid 50's AFAIK.

Taylor did start the GP, but the fuel tank split before he could complete his first lap... Shannon's less-than-a-lap appearance still stands as the shortest Grand Prix race 'career' by a constructor.
As for the original Kieft F1 project from 1954 that was withdrawn before it was finished due to fears that it would not be powerful enough to compete with the rumoured power of Mercedes and other engines at the time. However I think that car has finally been completed for historic racing, some 50+ years later than planned.

What I can add to the Shannon story - that probably isn't written in the dry dust of Atlas TNF - is that at one stage Paul Emery had his old mate John Campbell Jones driving the car. Apparently John Campbell-Jones never particularly threatened the Clarks or Stewarts with his raw speed, so Paul Emery offered the seat to his then Emery (Hillman) Imp saloon car pilot, Bill McGovern.
Bill's wife, Mary, took one look at the car and that was the end of that Grand Prix debut!

Well, at least Trevor Taylor gave it a go...It's safe to assume Trevor Taylor probably got the most out of the car. I doubt Clark or Hill could have squeezed much more out of it.
I believe the Shannon ended up in Formula 3 and was still racing n that class at the end of the 1960s...
