Yeah, "that timed run" at Goodwood in 99 didn't happen either did it?

The point stands though. Heidfeld was going to be the next top driver in F1 and ultimately, he never even won a race.

A bit like Hulkenberg today, who still hasn't scored a podium and seems condemned to the midfield.

Indeed. And that’s all thanks to Kimi Raikkonen and the timing of his emergence coinciding with the available McLaren seat.

Does anyone remember Hakkinen was only supposed to take a break after that 2001 season? He didn't retire outright at first. And Kimi's results were above expectations in 2001 but the Finnish connection shouldn't be denied either.

Later on, Heidfeld never recovered from Kubica winning the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix. That was one race for the taking and Kubica passed him on track to win it. Heidfeld was in a free fall after that. Does anyone even remember his record finishing streak?

And yes, there's a psychological factor involved. A Pole winning a GP in a car with German engine was more than a slap in the face. The Poland vs Germany beef is real, folks ;)

One driver that I could say fills the unfulfilled box is Josele Garza. Hard to believe his career fizzled out at the age of 25. I was surprised to learn he went from CART to test Minardi in 1988 :amazed:

That's not what happened though. Both cars were on different strategies during the 2008 Canadian GP but Heidfeld was ahead. The team swapped the positions as Kubica had an extra pit stop to make. That team order handed Kubica the win. As for Heidfeld never recovering, don't forget that Kubica had a poor 2009 season versus Heidfeld.

True, but Heidfeld was very unhappy when he had to let him pass. He knew what was coming!

Of course he was unhappy, he had every right to be. Before the team order he was ahead of Kubica on merit. On merit is not how Kubica won that race.

I see you forget how the refuelling era works? Kubica found enough speed to win by 16 secs. despite more pitstops than Heidfeld. With this logic, I guess Schumacher winning with 4 pitstops in France 2004 was like the most unmerited victory in F1 ever?

That’s not what happened though. My logic is sound. Kubica may have pulled those seconds, but he wouldn’t have done so had BMW not asked Heidfeld to step aside first.

It doesn't matter anymore, they asked him and he's still winless in F1. I'm fine with that
