Word on the street is that Arrows were told to self destruct both cars on the pit straight at Catalunya in 1998, just one lap apart.
Didn't we see that again a few years ago? Both cars in one team suffered complete power failure within seconds of each other. I remember joking that someone on the pit wall had switched off the wrong car and had to quickly do the other one.

I just want to go on record saying that I find the recent post by "jimclark" highly offensive and in very poor taste. Whether he was too young to notice Pollard rolling his eyes or otherwise expressing irony, or whether his memory of events that are more than half a century in the past now is letting him down, it doesn't matter. But to insinuate that Pollard would have been that stupid to believe such outlandish bullshit is not only beyond silly, but defamatory, insulting and degrading to a person who is no longer around to defend himself.
I don't care whether you're stupid enough to believe any of this nonsense, but laying it on Pollard is sick, just sick. If you're not man enough to stand by your deranged phantasies, at least have the decency to leave other people, especially deceased ones out of it.

Are you being serious? lol
I believe his story happened exactly the way he said it, but I think 14 year old jimclark probably came to the wrong conclusion. An 'interesting' story nonetheless.

You write a post like that and complain of offensive posts. I have always thought the Fastlane was enjoyable because of the lack of attacking the poster, Discuss a post but not attack the poster I found your post as offensive as any I have ever read on this forum.
@jimclark was asked for his memories of an event that happened to him as a 14 year old, a story which he shared with us and one I enjoyed. Im sure he has relayed it as he saw it. I am quite happy to believe his account . After all it is a memory of "jimclark", not of my memory or of @Michael Ferner. How I or anyone else feel about an actual memory of a third party is to me irrelevant. Certainly harbour an opinion, but to attack the poster for daring to have a memory that does not agree with your agenda I find unacceptable.
I wont be discussing the matter further.

Very cute, tee-hee-heeee.
However, even at fourteen I would have asked....what would either CART. or the team, had to gain by so doing?
I'll state it for you......nothing.
USAC (Indy) and Andy (STP) did......
Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end.....

'Appreciate your thought, and yes it did.
But, no, I didn't. You had to be there, you wouldn't doubt. So be it.
By the way, I heard of Art's passing (yes, I had tears) 5 years later whilst sitting in a radio studio with my employer, Robert T. Gross (an investment advisor; rip Bob) who had an hour call-in show here in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday mornings. I guess I'm imagining that too......I suppose I just like "deranged phantasies".
No, I don't hang pictures of his wreck to "remember him by" as I've been told here is the correct thing to do........Rather, this...
Michael Ferner wrote: ↑3 years agoEr, what did they have to gain?
Surely you joking. Please tell me it's so. And I know (think...hope....) you're not that naive.
In case I'm mistaken, have you ever heard of publicity? What all the advertising in business (racing and everywhere) is all about? In other words......MONEY is what they had to gain.
Sheesh. I knew this at 14.
Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end.....
Ah, yeah, I get it! So stupid of all those companies to try WINNING an event to advertize their business, when all they had to do was just give up! Imagine if Ford or Chevrolet or Mercedes-Benz had never WON a race, how much money could they have made!
Thank you for enlightening me!

According to your theory, all teams besides Mercedes should stay home. Only thing is, they have sponsors names (you know, the guys that pay the bills) plastered all over their cars and they proceed to lose. I guess I'm "phantasizing" again, eh???
Thank YOU for enlightening me. I appreciate it.

I'm obviously missing something here. Have you read my hypothetical dialogue there? If so, then tell me, where did I go wrong? What have I overlooked? Because to me it looks like both parties paid a high price to not get what they wanted. They both could have achieved higher gains by spending less money. So, if this was all about money, as you suggest, why did they spend more money to get less exposure?

No, I don't get it, and that's not what I said. I was just wondering why Mercede-Benz bothers about winning, when according to you more exposure (i.e. money) can be made by NOT winning. Explain that.
