Dessauer Rennstrecke
Hi everybody,
for the first time ever, we finally get to see the so called "Kurve der Jugend" or "Jugendkurve" of the Dessau race circuit "Dessauer Rennstrecke". It was used from 1952 until 1956. It was similar to the AVUS banking but much smaller - covered with grey bricks.
Pictures are from 15 May 1955.
I was there some years ago and took photographs of the remains.
I'll post more on this later.
Regards, sebbbl

Is this the same strip of concrete where the record trials in the 30s have been held, or is this an entirely different area?

If you mean the AVUS, then it is a different place.

No sorry Erwin. Record trials at Dessau in the 1930s. I know of at least one where a Diesel car built by Hanomag took a record that lasted quite a couple years

The Dessauer Rennstrecke uses a part of the Autobahn (so called Dessauer Rekordstrecke).
Today that's the A9 between Munich and Berlin. There were speed runs in 1939 of Mercedes, MG and Hanomag.

Does that mean the completely flat (i.e. no banking) courses in GPL and rFactor are wrong? Was this banking removed at some point and the circuit used without it?

Yes, completely wrong. Until now, strangely, there were no photographs of that banking; just a drawing in a newspaper of that time. The version for GPL was never used like that... but still a good track to racePTRACER wrote:Does that mean the completely flat (i.e. no banking) courses in GPL and rFactor are wrong? Here's some more on the different layouts: http://www.motorrennsportarchiv.de/locations/dessau/
The banking is still there! Well, sort of...
I was there in 2012 when the Paul-Greifzu-memorial was still there. Now it's inside the Paul-Greifzu-stadium in Dessau.
The Autobahn is absolutely straight there... I pass by that section when I drive from Leipzig to Berlin.

This clears it, thanks !sebbbl wrote:The Dessauer Rennstrecke uses a part of the Autobahn (so called Dessauer Rekordstrecke).

Co-incidently I recently bought a book called "75 Jahre Weltrekordfahrten bei Dessau: Der Hanomag-Diesel aus Hannover " about the Hanomag Diesel record car. I`ve seen it at the Technorama in Hildesheim last year (both book and car) but already was out of funds to get the book. lol
The photo should be around here as I posted about it, I think

I`ll have a look over the weekend as my main interest at the moment is Liam Becketts Full Throttle, which was due to arrive at the end of TT race week but appeared Tuesday alreadysebbbl wrote:Oh, Never heard about that book... Sounds interesting!!

First off the two pics I posted following my Technorama visit last year:

Alright Sebbl.
Here`s what refers to the record track in the book.

I believe that this is another very rare picture of the banked corner of the Dessau circuit.
It could very unlikely be Paul Greifzu during his final running during practice for the 1952 race; although he usually never wore a helmet.
Or it may more likely be Robert "Bobby" Kohlrausch during the 1953 race with the repaired Greifzu-BMW. Although I have a picture of him during that race where he's wearing a darker helmet.

If that is the banked corner, then it's a much wider, faster corner than I expected!
(Keep this up, I've always been fascinated with post-war German motor racing )

Apparently this is a photo of the remains of the banking:
