Bottom post of the previous page:

#19 ; 12/07/21 ; Dili (East Timor) - Darwin (Australia) ; 393 nm

Image
The flight today takes us from the tiny Timor-Leste International Airport to Darwin International Airport in Australia's Northern Territory.

Image
Taking on as little fuel as possible to make the crossing over the Timor Sea to Australia.

Image
We're full with mining equipment for Australia, and are take off!

Image
A beautiful sea and mountainous landscape as we climb out of Dili...

Image
... and leave behind the volcanic islands.

Image
Less than 100 nautimal miles into the flight, and already switching over to Australian ATC (Brisbane Center).

Image
Australia comes into sight! (the Tiwi Islands to be precise).

Image
We make our way above Bathurst Island, and near 'pleasant-sounding' places like Snake Bay.

Image
Our plane enters its third continent on this voyage: Oceania!

Image
Starting descent for landing at Darwin International Airport, ILS runway 29.

Image
Final turn before fully lined up for landing.

Image
And here we are then - touch down in Australia!

Image
Given our journey and country of registration, we are ordered to park remotely and stay within these confines.

Image
Our plane is ventilating, and the crew can't go anywhere. But with places like Snake Bay, Humpty Doo, Bees Creek, Gunn Point and Wak Wak in the area... it isn't too much of an issue not to be allowed out.

In the next episode...

Will the Lock the Gate farmers lynch @Antonov?

Or will the farmers grudgingly abide by social distancing and allow him to make it out alive?

@Antonov Good luck landing / take off at McArthur River Mine Airport.
Runway is only maximum 2500 metres long .... I believe the Antonov 124 needs at least 2800 metres, more if loaded.

Looking at the satellite map it isnt 2500 metres long. Looks less than 2000 metres

@Everso Biggyballies - actually, no. The aircraft, while 'fat', is in fact highly functional:
Wikipedia NL wrote:De An-124 werd ontworpen met een gigantisch landingsgestel, om er zeker van te zijn dat het toestel op de kleine en soms provisorische vliegvelden in de verre uiteinden van Rusland (destijds de Sovjet-Unie) te kunnen landen. Het toestel heeft slechts 800 meter vlak land nodig om te kunnen landen, tegenover 2 kilometer asfalt voor de Boeing-747[1] en 1100 meter voor de C-5 Galaxy.
or translated for you:
The AN-124 was designed with a massive landing gear to make sure that it could land on small and sometimes temporary airports in the far ends of Russia (former USSR). The plane needs just 800 meters to land, compared to 2 km for the Boeing 747 and 1.100 meters for the C-5 Galaxy.

That being said, we carry quite a payload, and approximate calculations say we need 1,600 meters.

#20 ; 15/07/21 ; Darwin (Australia) - McArthur River Mine Airport (Australia) ; 387 nm

Image
Belly of the beast

Image
The taxiing to runway 29 took ages.

Image
We did pass the main terminal with some Australian domestic flights.

Image
Take off heading northeast...

Image
... which is exactly the wrong direction for today's destination, hence a sharp left turn. We are chasing our own shadow over Fannie Bay.

Image
The city of Darwin and its international airport in the background as we are making a slow climb to flight level 300.

Image
The first part of the flight takes place over remarkably green landscapes.

Image
But as we fly further south, there is a sudden change in scenery.

Image
View from high in the cockpit: green landscapes to the left, a desolate landscape to the right.

Image
Making our descent to McArthur River Mine Airport. A whopping +33°C, despite it being winter and late it being late in the day.

Image
Fully extracted flaps; ready for landing!

Image
as @Everso Biggyballies correctly mentioned, the runway is on the short side. But we managed... just.

Image
Limited parking space, but it will do for our Ruslan;

Image
and we can start the unloading of our precious mining cargo.

Crew didn't feel much like quarantaining, so we asked and got permission to leave Australia for Papua New Guinea.
Good times ahead.
