N2 and ICR2

#1

Post by PTRACER »

So back in the mid-90s, it seems these were the racing games to have if you had a PC and were into sims. It was a little before my time so my earliest sims were GPL and the EA F1 series.

Now I have my sim rig wired up to Dosbox I have been playing them a little and I'm surprised just how well they play for their time.

Any memories of N2 and ICR2?

My first games were Sports Car GT, GPL, and the Crammond game Grand Prix. Sports Car GT was probably my favourite at the time.

Never imagined you being a gamer  I had SCGT on the PSX but it was very different from the PC version apparently.

I rac ICR2. Still got that game somewhere. The road courses were good, but the AI on it were horrible. They were better on ovals and airfield tracks.

While we're on about old games, I remember racing SCGT as well as the godawful Spirit of Speed 1937, along with the slightly less garbage Nascar Revolution. Oh, and Colin McRae Rally of course. Greece 1, New Zealand 1 and Sweden 1 were brilliant stages.

SCGT (on PC) and CMR2 were my entry points into good racing games.

I do remember playing N2 occasionally, Papyrus were really good with their racing games, it’s a shame NASCAR awarded exclusive licensing to EA Sports in 2004, completely killed their company, although the same developers went on to build the foundations of iRacing.

It’s a shame Indycar games aren’t really made, the last exclusive indycar game (not in other games like forza) came in 2005 I believe, although there was one in 2008 I believe on Xbox that was called Indianapolis 500 evolution which was based off the 60s and 70s.

Played GP2 to death as a kid. I remember printing the race results when I scored my first point at Barcelona...after going reverse at Monaco and taking out Hill from the lead. And downloading lots of carsets on dialup, but we didn't have a network yet so I had to copy them onto floppies and then copy them from floppy to my PC.

CMR2 is still good fun! Racing in reverse with the horn fireball cheat enabled.

Colin McRae Rally 1 and 2 were awesome. I think they still hold up today.

Also I kinda liked Spirit of Speed 1937. I didn't realise how bad it was until I got the internet and saw what other people were saying about it lol

Many, many hours were wisely invested into ICR2.
