erwin greven wrote: 2 years ago And Hamilton STUCK behind Gasly.. Even with DRS. And then look at Russell.
I think two things are going on here.
First, Russell handles the new car way better. He gets the maximum out of this car.
Second, i think Hamilton has a mental problem. He can't get the car working and last years finale, hit him very hard. If he turns this around quickly i see him retire before the end of the season.
I think that Russell is a great driver and I'm not surprised that he's doing well (sort of, given his car) however in Hamilton's defense I must say that I don't remember having seen a car bounce so much as his car did in some parts of the track today (ie. under braking going into Tamburello). I think that we should consider that from what we can see from the outside Hamilton uses a stiffer front end and that doesn't help him (he always set up his car like that, most notably during his McLaren years). Also in front o him he had another very very good driver who didn't put a foot wrong. On top of that you have to add that while the racing line was dry after a few laps, in most of the areas where Hamilton could have tried a move the track was still wet off the racing line so Hamilton was stuck behind Gasly all afternoon. I think that no one with that car and in those conditions could have passed Gasly.

Having said that I must say that I enjoyed the race, ok there were not many overtakes but we got plenty of close wheel racing. I alo think that the first part of the race was further proof that they could easily get rid of the DRS, the cars can keep close to the car in front and that really is more than enough, IMHO, to get rid of the ghastly DRS. Obviously they would have to make a few changes to the car but IMHO they are going in the right direction.

I must say that I'm very biased on this one as I grew up about 10 miles from Imola and it has always been one of my favorite tracks, it's great to see these guys drive around a real track, a track where a mistake still has some meaning, a track where they have to show what they can do BUT the current layout at Imola has a massive problem that needs to be fixed: Tamburello! It's very unfortunate that Senna died there, it was a freak accident, they have to get rid of that chicane because it just takes away most overtaking opportunities. Either they get rid of the chicane and go back to the old layout (the Villeneuve kink under braking for Tosa was much more dangerous, I understand why they want to keep that chicane) OR they should have a much slower chicane, a bit like the first chicane at Monza, the cars aren't slowing down enough for overtaking (most of the times) and the layout is such that it is very easy to make your car "wider" (see Gasly, all in total compliance with the rules).

Another thing about Imola is that from the tv images you don't get the sense of how difficult some bits are, and I'm referring in particular to Piratella and the entry into Rivazza 1.

All in all I really look forward to see what happens when F1 goes to some other proper track like Silverstone, Spa or Monza

Loads of clueless twats* seem to be slagging imola off for the lack of overtaking.

It's great that overtaking isn't easy. (And of course it was mostly due to the dry line)

So Max more than doubled his total score this weekend, (34 points for the weekend. was his haul.) and yet still Leclerc will remain in the lead of the title in two weeks time, regardless of what might happen in Miami. Max has jumped to 2nd in the title though. Up from 6th.

I think that was the first Red Bull 1-2 since Malaysia 2016.

58 points for Red Bull over a total of 20 for Fezza.

To summarise the titles....

n Driver Points
1. Charles LECLERC 86
2. Max VERSTAPPEN 59
3. Sergio PEREZ 54
4. George RUSSELL 49
5. Carlos SAINZ 38
6. Lando NORRIS 35
7. Lewis HAMILTON 28
8. Valtteri BOTTAS 24
9. Esteban OCON 20
10. Kevin MAGNUSSEN 15

Thanks to little input from Carlos (albeit that was down to DannyRic this weekend) the constructors is much closer than the drivers title.

n Constructor Points
1. Ferrari 124
2. Red Bull 113
3. Mercedes 77
4. McLaren Mercedes 46
5. Alfa Romeo Ferrari 25
6. Alpine Renault 22
7. AlphaTauri Red Bull 16
8. Haas Ferrari 15
9. Aston Martin Mercedes 5
10. Williams Mercedes 1

George's car is giving him chest pains and back problems due to the porpoising. He says it is unsustainable..... and takes his breath away

8+25+1= 34 points. Nice weekend for Max.

I love it for Norris, also!

How many points does someone get when he finishes 13th?
No points for finishing 13th place, but a lot of pointers on how to drive in the midfield

Was a bit of a pun to Lulu's remark how many points he won, finishing 10th a few races ago.

Exactly right. Moving off the dry line onto the wet stuff is deadly on slick tyres, so that really limited the overtaking options yesterday.

Allowing DRS changed nothing for Hamilton in the end. Really disappointing to see him well outside the Top 10 while Russell could finish 4th.

The sad thing is this year's Merc is probably no worse a car than the Williams George had to race last year. It has put him in good stead to be able to maximise what can be extracted from the Merc..... Lewis on the other hand has rarely had to put up with a really bad car (not since 2009   ) and is unable to maximise it. Hence George is making his 7 times WDC teamate look a bit of a twat. They are tied in qualy terms 2-2, but George is 3-1 ahead on race results (and when Lewis beat him it was the opening race of the season and George followed Lewis across the line. Oh and George is 21 points ahead of Lewis and 3 places higher in the title race. All down to his abilities in maximising a dud car.

Actually I feel I made an error in my previous post. It could be said that Lewis and George are not all square in qualy terms.... its 3-2 really, as George not only out qualified Lewis on Friday, for a Sprint race position advantage but he also finished higher in the Sprint race and thus had a better main race starting position.

Charles' mistake is exactly why I was backing Sainz to run him close this year.

Not quite working out like that since Sainz did what I was expecting Leclerc to do in Australia and then Imola Q.
