I think that Russell is a great driver and I'm not surprised that he's doing well (sort of, given his car) however in Hamilton's defense I must say that I don't remember having seen a car bounce so much as his car did in some parts of the track today (ie. under braking going into Tamburello). I think that we should consider that from what we can see from the outside Hamilton uses a stiffer front end and that doesn't help him (he always set up his car like that, most notably during his McLaren years). Also in front o him he had another very very good driver who didn't put a foot wrong. On top of that you have to add that while the racing line was dry after a few laps, in most of the areas where Hamilton could have tried a move the track was still wet off the racing line so Hamilton was stuck behind Gasly all afternoon. I think that no one with that car and in those conditions could have passed Gasly.erwin greven wrote: ↑2 years ago And Hamilton STUCK behind Gasly.. Even with DRS. And then look at Russell.
I think two things are going on here.
First, Russell handles the new car way better. He gets the maximum out of this car.
Second, i think Hamilton has a mental problem. He can't get the car working and last years finale, hit him very hard. If he turns this around quickly i see him retire before the end of the season.
Having said that I must say that I enjoyed the race, ok there were not many overtakes but we got plenty of close wheel racing. I alo think that the first part of the race was further proof that they could easily get rid of the DRS, the cars can keep close to the car in front and that really is more than enough, IMHO, to get rid of the ghastly DRS. Obviously they would have to make a few changes to the car but IMHO they are going in the right direction.
I must say that I'm very biased on this one as I grew up about 10 miles from Imola and it has always been one of my favorite tracks, it's great to see these guys drive around a real track, a track where a mistake still has some meaning, a track where they have to show what they can do BUT the current layout at Imola has a massive problem that needs to be fixed: Tamburello! It's very unfortunate that Senna died there, it was a freak accident, they have to get rid of that chicane because it just takes away most overtaking opportunities. Either they get rid of the chicane and go back to the old layout (the Villeneuve kink under braking for Tosa was much more dangerous, I understand why they want to keep that chicane) OR they should have a much slower chicane, a bit like the first chicane at Monza, the cars aren't slowing down enough for overtaking (most of the times) and the layout is such that it is very easy to make your car "wider" (see Gasly, all in total compliance with the rules).
Another thing about Imola is that from the tv images you don't get the sense of how difficult some bits are, and I'm referring in particular to Piratella and the entry into Rivazza 1.
All in all I really look forward to see what happens when F1 goes to some other proper track like Silverstone, Spa or Monza
