I believe a lot of it is this years Merc is no worse than last years Williams and George is more attuned to having to drag performance out of a car than Lewis. George has never (other than one off Merc drives) had a car that does everything you want when you want. Lewis has never showed great abilities dealing with crap cars (ie 2009 McLaren to start with) If he is in tune with the car he is on his day unbeatable. If not......

I'm not entirely sure he can't drag a better performance out of the car, I think he's got an attack of the Kimi Raikkonen syndrome and just can't be bothered to do so in the same way he once did. He's not young and hungry to win the title anymore, he's been there and done that seven times already. I could be wrong, I often am, but that is my take on it.PTRACER wrote: ↑1 year agoHamilton's not about to be fired, but I almost pity him for how far off George's pace he is. He seems to be more like a Jody Scheckter than a Gilles Villeneuve at the moment - totally unable to drag a good performance out of a poor car.Star wrote: ↑1 year ago I think Hamilton is under pressure given how well Russell is performing in the same car as him. Mick Schumacher, Nicholas Latifi as already said. Alonso does seem to be struggling more this year but he's been unlucky with car issues, his DNF in Imola for example wasn't down to him, he had a damaged car from a lap 1 incident.
On the other hand, @Everso Biggyballies could be right and he's just not capable of improving the car. He's not well known for being good at set up and evaluating a car then helping to improve it is he?
I hope so

He's still young and I don't feel his skill has dropped at all in the past 2 seasons - Lewis has said he has no confidence in the car this year and that really shows in his driving.Star wrote: ↑1 year agoI'm not entirely sure he can't drag a better performance out of the car, I think he's got an attack of the Kimi Raikkonen syndrome and just can't be bothered to do so in the same way he once did. This is a bit of a long boring video comparing George and Lewis's qualifying laps at Jeddah - George was 10kph faster at the apex of some corners. He was harry flatters in some places while Lewis was lifting. Russell was taking more kerb and getting right up to the walls while Lewis was giving them some space. That's not someone who is losing their reaction time through age, it is a pure lack of confidence that the car is going to stick. Whether he is still hungry to win or not is something I cannot judge.

It's a bit of using the available evidence to comfort a person's set of existing beliefs. Those that believe Lewis has 7 championships just because the team carried him completely (car, team orders, etc) are now claiming the difference is because he never had any skill and was always slower than any other driver.
The truth may be somewhere in between as this video shows.
But I can agree that because Russel is used to a poorly performing car, he can have more confidence and try to maximize it (the why). It's been a very long time since Lewis had a bad one and he is not adapting well. But he will eventually, and I also believe Mercedes will improve the car eventually.
I expect to see Mercedes play a role in the championship later in the season. Too late for them to win it, but they may be taking podiums away from one of the key players making it a bit interesting.
