Seems to me that Crofty is universally disliked.

Who do you think was the worst?

Allen with his arse licking? Legard who kept tripping over himself anytime a yellow flag appeared? Or Crofty...old shouty Crofty.... :wow:

Crofty wouldn't be half as bad if he just calmed it down.

Legard for me takes the trophy. James Allen next. Crofty is getting worse, and more shouty by the race I think. I could vote it differently by late season

All of them are terrible. They all come across as pompous moderately successful uncles that you get stuck talking to at the family barbecue.

Given that I never can tell them apart they are equally bad I suppose.

Meanwhile I quite like how Brundle has become laid back, sarcastic and generally appears to not GAF.

We were spoilt for decades with Murray. I can't tell them apart either.

Other than the new C4 guy is more annoying

Jonathan Legard is the worst commentator I have heard in *any* sport. He had a box full of neutrals between his ears.

I really respected James Allen for his pit reporting but it fell apart when he moved to the commentary box full time. Actually, I don't think he did a bad job, he had big shoes to fill and so everyone automatically wanted to hate on him for not being Murray.

Crofty is fairly good as a commentator, but if his commentary box personality is the same as his real life personality, my god.

What Croft "says" is generally fine. It's the "way" he says it that can be annoying.

Don't even remember Legard, lol. I generally forget that era of F1 though.

Allen was so biased that it was just embarrassing at times.

Agree totally re Crofty, the info is good but he feels the need to shout and scream everything. He is getting worse by the race.
I cant even here the name James Allen without the words JENSON BUTTON WINS screaming through my ears (Hungary 2006, JB's first win?), and then Hamilton came along. I think his bias spawned my not being a Lewis fan. I get the British driver British broadcaster thing, but we pay for a world service, make it one.....
Legard defied description.

To us experts, commentators will always be "bad", the best we can hope for is "tolerable". Back in the day, I often muted the TV because I didn't actually need commentary, I could see all that I needed (and usually way more than the commentator anyway) on the screen. But, today that's no longer possible - when I tried to watch a few races last year, I didn't understand many things (rules, key personnel, terms) and couldn't even tell the cars apart, so I really needed commentary. But what I got was a yelling idiot. That was a rude shock, and put me off as much as anything else.

Interesting topic. Murray's void is difficult to fill. I think Croft is the better of the bunch, but still annoying at times.

When the time comes Martin Brundle will be easier to replace in my opinion. But hopefully not anytime soon.

I think Murray was just as - if not even more - partisan than Allen was in terms of loving anything British. And that alone would be rather annoying if that's all there was to him.

However, the difference between Allen or Croft compared to Murray was that Murray was simply enthusiastic about things (so you got caught up in the moment with him), while others who have come since are sensationalist.

So while Murray came across as sincere, others end up coming across like tools. For instance, when James Allen would spruik a grandstand finish (as two cars with zero intention of doing anything, ever, maintain station) and Croft screams if he spots a plastic wrapper blowing in the breeze.

I have no doubt that Allen and Croft both love motorsport. I do too, and I can get excited by it. But bloody hell, it's okay to call a boring race a boring race. That said, maybe Murray had fewer producers in his ear yelling "We're losing viewers! DO SOMETHING!"
