Should drivers lose their grid spot if they cause a red flag?

#1

Post by PTRACER »

After Leclerc crashed during Monaco qualifying, the FIA has said it will review the red flag rules and may demote drivers to the back of the grid (or similar) if they caused a red flag in qualifying. Apparently a system like this is used in Indycar.

One or two of the drivers have waded in as well:
Alonso said that the rules as currently written gave drivers of crashed cars an unfair advantage as they can replace parts as necessary without losing grid positions.

He added that if an IndyCar-style rule - whereby drivers causing red flags are docked their two fastest times - were introduced in F1 then drivers would be careful not to "drive over your possibilities".
Personally, I would be against it. Didn't set a representative time before the red flag came out? Sorry! Not enough time to restart the session so you can do a lap? Bad luck, chump.

No driver wants a new corner put on a car they're comfortable in. I don't think it's an issue.

It's not big enough of a problem.

Sure, if Schumacher parks his car on an apex, go for it.

But if somebody properly bins it, they're already suffering.

My thoughts exactly.

Having said that I would not be averse to Q3 being a top 10 shootout..... each car gets one lap on their own without traffic to set their lap that decides their top 10 grid position. Bin it in the shootout you get 10th. That way we dont get this fannying around jockeying for position on the outlap which I dont like..

Whilst driver A is on his flying lap, Driver B is released for his warmup lap as soon as A starts his timed lap will make it time friendly for broadcasters, and we get to see each of the top 10 on the limit with no traffic, no excuses.

Yes under that system they would lose one of their runs in Q3. So what. Its puts more pressure on the drivers to make their one shootout lap count.

The only real problem would be if weather affected the top ten with the track either drying or getting worse whilst the driver waits his turn. But that to me is a case of shit happens. No real difference to a yellow flag disrupting your final run. Roundabouts and swings.

A bit like we have in V8SC at say Bathurst.

Sorry I'd say that it's the Indycar rule that's silly, not the F1 one. Last thing we need is to meddle with rules that don't exist. They should instead consider focusing on other stuff like discussing whether blue flags should be removed, or whether track limits should continue to be enforced like they are today. We need fewer rules, not more. The sport is complicated enough as it is.

Several race tracks are designed to have the track limits enforced. How Indycar is racing at COTA is waiting for a disaster to happen.

No. This is a non-issue outside Monaco, Baku and Singapore.
