The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was built as part of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics development programme. The foundation stone was laid in 1989, while the first car race was a round of the 1991 Spanish Touring Car Championship.

Two weeks after the touring cars raced at Barcelona, it was Formula 1’s turn. The track enjoyed a sensational debut, with Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna’s famous eyeball-to-eyeball drag race down the straight, before Mansell took the lead and drove on to victory.

Usually they would have loads of data from testing pre-season but this year they wont have that luxury with testing having been in the desert. But they all know it with their eyes closed.

The track is a good mix of high- and low-speed corners, with the challenging Turn 3 right-hander a great chance to evaluate the balance of the car your team’s designers have given you to fight with for the season.

What happened last year?

After starting in second, Bottas was overtaken by Verstappen and Stroll at the first corner. Bottas then used the DRS on the fifth lap to pass Stroll and move back up into third place. Hamilton won the race by 24 seconds, lapping everyone except for Verstappen and Bottas, who completed the podium in second and third place.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc retired from the race with a mechanical problem after he spun at the chicane.
Leclerc's teammate Sebastian Vettel finished seventh after driving for more than half the race distance on one set of soft tyres.

Mongol Update: They never got there. It was summer and they had left their sun block back home. And the Basques were bastards and waiting for them if they had turned up.

No Mongols in the line up for the race this year either. Only Mexicans, Brits, French, Japanese, Finns, Dutch, Monégasques, Italians, Aussies, Spanish, Germans, Canadians and Russians who cant be Russian.
Yes I know for the pedants out there that is all plurals and only Brits Germans French Finns Spanish and Canadians are actually more than one.... live with it. If that is the worse thing that happens to you today, its a good day

Forgot to chuck in anything about the weather.....

I dont think there is anything to get excited about, although one forecast I read said something along the lines of possibly maybe on Sunday..... but it aint going to happen.

I believe we have only ever had three wet affected races there (Catalunya)... two in a row the first two years, 1991 and 92 then in c'96 and nothing since then. So it seems that as far as the GP goes the rain in Spain DOES stay mainly on the plane.

Temperatures in the early to mid twenties for the weekend.

Anyway a link to the motor racing /Catalunya weather forecast for the weekend. (Well, the link is Sunday but links on the page to Friday and Saturday)

..... and Mazespin has dropped it already. He managed to avoid anything solid. He has yet to learn too much loud pedal in an F1 car coming out of corners = trouble.

Mazepin has to be worst F1 driver since, I don't know Yuji Ide? Ricardo Rosset? Taki Inoue? Alex Yoong? Gaston Mazzacane?

Strip his damn license from him.

Mazzacane was slow but he didn't crash too ofen. He's way above Mazepin. Rosset had years of F3000 behind him. Inoue was... well, Inoue.

Ide and Yoong are the two worst from that list though Yoong kinda rebounded his reputation in A1GP.

Bottom line: Mazepin is the worst F1 driver since Yuji Ide

P1

Bottas finished in P1 ahead of Verstappen and Hamilton. Who knows who was trying and who wasnt. it remains to be seen who has the quickest car here today. Norris was fourth - but feels they went the wrong way with settings and is looking for better. Leclerc and Sainz were up next in fifth and sixth, despite running the medium compound. Gasly, Vettel, Perez and Stroll round out an interesting top 10 ..... is Vettel at last getting on top of the AM? Too early to say, and have to wait for qualy and the race. One fine day maketh not summer as they say, and a top 10 qualifying last week did him no good come the race results.

The FIM wanted to change this corner. And the FIA agreed with the change.
