Not a surprising podium.

So the Merc is about half a second quicker when on equal tyres. Lewis has already won this title. Another easy win without real competition.

A disappointing race that had promised more. I wandered off at the end.... emptying the dishwasher was more interesting!

That was a really exciting race. It's been a long time since we had a battle like that for the lead. Knowing that Hamilton won is what kills it.

Well, seeing how we are shamelessly talking stereotypes, I discussed this with a friend of mine who used to work in Japan. He commented that while the Japanese tend to be very polite, when they do lose it, they sometimes really do lose it. Sort of a case where once the cultural restraints are broken, there is nothing holding them back.Everso Biggyballies wrote: ↑2 years agoOr as I suspect all of the above.Ruslan wrote: ↑2 years agoNo it does not. Is that because we misinterpret the culture, or because he does not fit the stereotype, or because he is really a raging maniac?Vassago wrote: ↑2 years agoIt's actually curious to see a Japanese F1 driver being somewhat vocal aka emotional. Maybe surrounded by Italians at AT he has inherited some Latin emotions and wants to 'fit in'.
My direct experience of living with or working with the Japanese is limited.

A few comments on the race:
1. Not sure who won driver of the day, but probably should be Hamilton or Leclerc.
2. Another masterful drive by the Hamilton/Mercedes team. This time he was smart enough to back off a little earlier in the first corners and was able to come back and win it. It did help that he had the slightly better car.
3. Verstappen: I think he did everything he could do. Did not see any errors.
4. Bottas: Embarrassing. Nothing wrong with his car, a track he knows, and basically couldn't do anything. Couldn't match his teammates pace and could not even stay within striking distance of Verstappen. If he could have stayed within 20 seconds of Verstappen late in the race he could have at least prevented the last pit stop and Verstappen getting a point for fastest lap. Could not even do that, even though he probably had the better car. Just sad. He needs to be replaced.
5. Leclerc: Very good drive. Great pass at the start. Nicely thought out.
6. Perez: Underwhelming performance. Not sure why Red Bull can't produce to good drives. As a minimum should have had 4th. With Bottas lagging some 28 seconds behind Verstappen late in the race, not sure why Perez was not somewhere up there.
7. Established teammates ahead in 5 cases - new teammates ahead in 1 case (Ricciardo). This still seems to be a story. When will this story end?
8. Mazepin: He really does suck. Finished much further behind Schumacher than Lafiti did George Russell, and Latifi is pretty slow. Apparently Mazepin is slower than Latifi, which I was not sure was possible. Got some outside and inside camera shots of Schumacher. He looked a little uneven in his lines and driving. Not sure he is that good.
9. Tsunoda: Did he accidently turn off his own car? I saw the pictures later of one of the team people talking to him holding his hands out like he was showing Tsunoda how to operate the buttons on the steering wheel.
10. Sainz, Ricciardo, Ocon, Gasly: All good drives.
Next couple of tracks are Monaco and Azerbaijan. Odd street circuits so we don't really know how they are going to match up. Does seems like Mercedes has the advantage on regular known road courses and Hamilton now has a 14 point lead. So after those two races we go into a series of courses that I think Hamilton/Mercedes hold the advantage at. It is beginning to look like Red Bull is a month or two away for focusing all their attention on the 2022 car (as I gather 8 of the other teams already have).
P.S. Shout out to Giovanazzi's pit crew for spotting the tire deflation, realizing the situation immediately and correctly swapping out all four tires. Good work.
P.P.S. Apparently Verstappen’s first pit stop was at his own initiative and surprised the crew, which is why it was a little slow. Error or just Max being Max?

Well, Tsunoda is going to be entertaining, as I think he does have a lot of potential. Now did he manage to turn off his own car during the race?PTRACER wrote: ↑2 years agoMy experience of living/working with them is very recent and you're right. Nigel Mansell managed it in Canada one year, started celebrating his win too early, before the chequered flag.
But it was also widely believed that Mansell had let the revs drop too low as he waved to the spectators in his premature celebration, stalling his Renault engine in the process. Or that he had caused his own demise by accidentally hitting the engine kill-switch as he gestured joyfully.

Thoughts: Mercedes had the pace here, but the terrible nature of the circuit actually made the race a lot more interesting.
Spain and Portugal were anticipated to be two difficult races for Red Bull, so two second places for Max aren't a disaster. If he can wrangle a win at Monaco or Azerbaijan, it could make things interesting.
What we really need is a Hamilton DNF. From a neutral perspective, he needs to be delivered a few races bad luck. Unfortunately it was Latifi breaking mirrors this weekend..
I must say, credit to Lewis, he drove excellently, especially in T1 when he could have easily been punted off. It's been much less of a chore watching him win this year, as he's really been made to work for it.
