What's making them so long? Is it the fuel bladder behind the driver? Or are they lengthening them for crash protection? Something just doesn't seem to add up to me when I look at the increases through the years. It's like they are artificially longer.

I'm pretty sure a good foot or so of the length is just a spacer at the end of the car.

I think it is to do with downforce... more floor area to generate D/F. But partially to do with the addition of extra hybrid components, larger fuel tank (no refuelling), additional cooling needs, extra radiators, intercoolers for turbos etc.

There was no refuelling in 1991, so that argument goes out of the window.
A lot of the growth comes down to increased safety measures and the current bigger power units.
If I recall correctly, some of the increase in the nose was down to the current regulations to add downforce.

And I can't imagine that a V12 Ferrari would be economic with its fuel!

Crash structure and aero mostly. Longer cars means longer floor that creates more downforce and on the crash structure side of things you want more crumble zone to slow the car down slower in the even of an impact. Couple that with a the teams regularly pushing for a raise in the minimum weight and you got F1 buses, that is more weight = more material to lengthen the cars.

For all their talk about pushing efficiency making the cars heavier and heavier goes completely against that. I'd love to see what the designers came up with if they'd lowered the minimum weight to something ridiculous like 250kg but kept the safety requirements. Not that we are going to see that, because F1 doesn't like to spend money on engineering anymore.
