2021 Season Testing

2021 F1 Testing summary.... who what when.

Just a breakdown of who is testing what on what day / session. Interesting to see Williams trusting the first day to Nissany! Money talks.

Only three teams are entering 2021 with the same driver line-up as last year, meaning a number of drivers will spend the test getting used to their new surroundings and working with new faces, adding to the importance of the test.

Most teams giving their main drivers half of day 1 each.
Max has day 1 at Red Bull with Perez day 2 Day 3 shared
Aston Martin: sharing each day between Vettel and Stroll
Alpine: Ocon gets day 1, Alonso Day 2 and shared Day 3
Williams: Nissany Day 1, Latifi Day 2 with Russell not getting a go until Day 3.

1 hour of testing complete so far. Obviously you can draw zero conclusions from that, but the fastest time is only about 1 second off the fastest race lap in 2020. So I expect no real dramatic change in speed compared to last year.

Early reliability issues for Mercedes who lose track time thanks to a gearbox change. A problem was identified on Bottas installation lap and he has not been seen since.

So far in the absence of Mercedes, Alfa, Alpine, Red Bull and now currently McLaren have had time at the top of the table. Lets not get too excited though, it is just a few hours into day 1 testing.

Failures during testing this season are totally unacceptable. These cars are evolutions of last years machines, and last year saw some of the most reliable cars we've ever had.

Interestingly Mercedes is the only team to have not used their chance to do a shakedown pre testing. (Haas did theirs yesterday at Bahrain, otherwise others did them previously.
Haas are going to be a worry I think.... basically nothing much new this year and confirmation from the team that they will be doing no further development on the car this year, rather concentrating on next year' car.

A bit irrelevant at this stage but times set so far, laps completed etc:

The drivers at the bottom end of the list are basically drivers scheduled to run this afternoon.
Plenty of laps run by Gasly with 52 clocked already. For reference 57 laps is a race distance here.

1 Daniel RICCIARDO 1:32.203 37
2 Pierre GASLY +0.183 52
3 Max VERSTAPPEN +0.362 41
4 Charles LECLERC +1.039 40
5 Sebastian VETTEL +1.539 39
6 Esteban OCON +1.642 39
7 Kimi RÄIKKÖNEN +1.882 38
8 Roy NISSANY + 4.443 19
9 Mick SCHUMACHER +4.960 7
10 Valtteri BOTTAS - - 1

11 Lando NORRIS- - - -
12 Nikita MAZEPIN- - - -
13 Lance STROLL- - - -
14 Yuki TSUNODA- - - -

Already in trouble with Mick Schumacher having missed most of the session (he has managed just 7 laps) with some unknown issue.

Vettel is also out of the Aston Martin after it failed to leave pit lane and had to be dragged back to the garage as he went out on another run.

OK its a gearbox issue and apparently needing a replacement gearbox to be fitted..
