I'm saying that beating last year's pole time in what are supposed to be cars with less downforce is pretty impressive by the red bull teams. Admittedly there may be questions about drs use and track limits.
Actually they didnt (beat last year's pole time)..... by a margin of near enough 1.7 seconds. In fact the top half of the grid last year were all faster than Max's fastest test time. They were way inside last years fastest race lap, but these guys in testing were on full qualy sims with the questionable DRS and track limit issues. (Fastest race lap was a 32 something.)

Max's fastest test time was a 1:28.960
Lewis got pole last year with a 1:27.264

In fact lets throw in the qualifying times by team last year.... Only Ferrari Williams Alfa and Haas were slower than the time Max set in testing.

Mercedes – 1:27.264
Red Bull – 1:27.678
Racing Point (now Aston Martin) – 1:28.332
Renault (now Alpine) – 1:28.417
AlphaTauri – 1:28.448
McLaren – 1:28.542
Ferrari – 1:29.137
Williams – 1:29.234
Alfa Romeo – 1:29.491
Haas – 1:30.111

It will be interesting to see what the qualy times are next weekend and how they compare to last year and indeed this years testing. Then all the sandbags will be out and modes turned up to the max, plus they will have further updates and development from what they found in testing.

Just sayin'.....

I must admit that the gap between last years race fastest lap and the pole lap was quite a shock to me. I knew they had passed the race fastest lap mark very early in the piece on day 1, and may even have said that here, but on day 2 I realised how much faster the pole lap was and was shocked the difference was basically 5 seconds.

It sort of takes the piss a bit when you get a point for a fastest lap yet get nothing for setting a pole lap some 5 seconds quicker.
I guess the last two laps being IIRC behind an SC or a VSC might have thwarted a few fastest lap on the final tour plans.

But think of THE DRAMA!

Actually, I wonder if they'll get a bonus point for those shitty sprint races as well.

Pirelli tyres will be slightly more durable this year, so I hope that means they can push a bit harder on Sunday. I wish the fuel limit wasn't such a big factor as well though, I'm all for a return to refuelling.

Some quotations from Max. I gather he believes the pecking order is 1) Mercedes, 2) Red Bull and 3) Ferrari. Also he downplays Hamilton's spins in testing and explains them away. He does imply that Mercedes were sand-bagging.

No3 is wishful thinking, it actually says maclaren

I wouldn't listen to max any more than Lewis in the phony testing war mind

I agree re the downplaying of teams actual status..... no one seems to want the favourites tag, probably I guess down to the pressure of expectation that such status imparts on a team or individual, and the negatives that even a slight not achieving as per expectation. It seems that if expectation is on a team to be comfortably best, even being best / better but by a lower margin than hype fuelled expectation is somehow interpreted as a degree failure.

Aston Martin seem to be a potential example of this.... after their success last year and with all the razamataz and 'we are gonna do this that and the other' hype and their now backpedalling talk is coming across as failure that they need to turn round. I am already thinking of them as a team that seems to be 'all mouth and trousers'.
