"Today, in the face of the unstable clinical condition of the patient Alex Zanardi, after appropriate consultations with Dr. Franco Molteni, Head of the Department of Specialist Rehabilitation Villa Beretta, a facility belonging to the Valduce Hospital, where the patient was hospitalized by the July 21, and the specialists of reference, the transfer of the same was arranged, with adequate means and adequate assistance, to the Intensive Care Unit of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan ".

This was announced in a statement by Claudio Zanon, health director of the Valduce Hospital, specifying that "no further information on the case will be released". The transfer, as a precaution, would have been decided due to a lowering of the athlete's values.
So he went back to Intensive Care???

I dont understand it really.... unless the son was being over optimistic about his Dad's life not being in danger any more, with the challenge being the neurological and optical challenges being the issues now.
Whatever the reasons the return to an IC unit is not the best news. Hopefully it is more an observation thing, or his release previously was just a bit premature.

I felt it strange too because few days ago i ve heard dottor costa saying he was hoping to see alex at the 2021 olympics. Not sure it was a simple hope or a statement based on information he had. I also read that the priest of the clinic where he was beought few days ago saying that alex was conscious but couldn t keep his eyes opened.
Unfortunately i read the “unstable” as a worsening of his condition.

This is really sad news, he's already been through so much and achieved so much despite that, you have to hope he can make it through again. Where there's life there's hope.

Keep fighting Alex, we're all on your side!!

Updates from gazzetta.it

Alex Zanardi's second night was spent at San Raffaele. The structure reveals that doctors have continued to work on stabilizing the conditions of the Paralympic champion, transferred on Friday to Milan from Villa Beretta di Costa Masnaga after a bacterial infection and other complications had provoked fever and an imbalance of vital functions.
THE FIRST HOURS— Alex Zanardi's first night and first day in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at San Raffaele in Milan had passed quietly. This does not mean that the Paralympic champion is better and that the clinical picture has not stabilized after the jolt on Friday, after that fever linked to a bacterial infection that contributed, together with other complications, to worsening conditions. It means, however, that once again Alex has patiently set out on the right side. It is yet another demonstration of his incredible temperament, the one that allowed him to rebuild a happy existence after the accident at the Lausitzring which in 2001 deprived him of his legs and which kept him clinging to life even after the terrible impact against a truck on June 19 along the road between Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia.

Updates (gazzetta.it)

Alex Zanardi underwent a fourth surgery on Saturday at San Raffaele in Milan, for the treatment of some late complications due to head injury suffered on 19 June, after the accident with his handbike against a truck on the road between Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia (Siena). This is the hospital statement. "Regarding the clinical conditions of Alex Zanardi, the San Raffaele Hospital communicates that the day after the transfer to the Neurosurgical Intensive Therapy, directed by Professor Luigi Beretta, the patient underwent a delicate neurosurgical procedure performed by Professor Pietro Mortini, director of the Operative Unit of Neurosurgery, for the treatment of some late complications due to primary head injury. At the moment, the clinical and radiological tests confirm the success of the aforementioned treatments and the current clinical conditions of the patient, still hospitalized in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, appear stable ".

He seems well looked after, so let's just hope he can go back to his old life soon enough.

Alex Zanardi's clinical conditions improve. This was communicated by the San Raffaele Hospital. "After a period during which he was subjected to intensive care following hospitalization on July 24 - the institute said - the patient responded with significant clinical improvements. For this reason, he is currently assisted and treated with semi-intensive care at the Neuroreanimation Unit, directed by Professor Luigi Beretta ".

Great news he is seemingly improving. I had a look for any updates the other day but found nothing, so thanks for the update. Must admit when I found nothing I said to myself hopefully 'no news is good news'.

This news is two weeks old. Zanardi is responding with "momentary and initial signs of interaction". After what he went through in 2001 and how strong he was, it's heartbreaking to hear he is practically Schumachered.
MILAN — Italian racing driver turned Paralympic gold medalist Alex Zanardi has started responding to treatment with signs of interaction, more than three months after he was seriously injured in a handbike crash.

Zanardi has spent most of that time in intensive care after crashing into an oncoming truck during a relay event near the Tuscan town of Pienza on June 19.

“For several days now. Alex Zanardi has undergone cognitive and motor rehabilitation sessions, with the administration of visual and acoustic stimuli, to which the patient responds with momentary and initial signs of interaction,” the San Raffaele hospital in Milan said in a statement Thursday.

The hospital said that is “significant progress” but added that his condition remains serious, and that it would be “absolutely premature” to make a long-term prognosis.

Zanardi, 53, suffered serious facial and cranial trauma in the crash and was put in a medically induced coma. Doctors have warned of possible brain damage.

He was operated on several times to stabilize him and reconstruct his severely damaged face and the Milan hospital added that he recently had undergone another surgery to reconstruct his skull and would have another one in the coming weeks.

Very sad to hear that his condition in terms of quality of life is so compromised. We canbut hope for better indications in the forthcoming weeks.
