Bottom post of the previous page:

RIP indeed. Not sure, but I think this might be the 1984th topic in the F1 discussion group. Pretty fitting, if I'm right in thinking that

Lauda funeral set for Wednesday

The public can attend Niki Lauda’s funeral next Wednesday.

German-language reports say it will take place at the gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral in the F1 legend’s native Vienna. After the closed casket is displayed until midday, a public requiem will take place.

The 70-year-old’s family will attend a separate private funeral and burial. The Austrian news platform Heute reported that the family turned down the city of Vienna’s offer of a grave of honour.

“The front part of the cathedral is reserved for the family and relatives. In the back of the cathedral, the public can also take part in the requiem,” said Pastor Toni Faber.

Osterreich newspaper claims Lauda will be buried at Vienna’s central cemetery, where his mother also lays.

It is believed Toto Wolff, Lewis Hamilton and even Arnold Schwarzenegger could attend the funeral.

I guess Nikki wasn't a fan of cremation then.

(Sorry, but with his sense of humour I'm sure he's made a similar joke!)

Alan Jones gave a nice tribute to Lauda today, referring to him as an extraordinary man. However he also told an amusing Niki tale regarding a Lauda Air flight Jones had by chance caught.... I thought I would share it.
“Niki was an extraordinary person, extraordinary,” Jones said during an appearance on Fox Sports’ The Backpage.

“Not only was he a magnificent racing driver, multiple world champion, but a successful business person, a fantastic aviator.

“This is a man that’s airplane crashed; he took on Boeing and beat them. He was just an extraordinary man.”

After retiring from F1 at the end of 1985, Lauda founded Lauda Air, which led to a chance encounter with Jones during a flight from Europe.

“I was coming home from England, and I was with my wife, and we hopped on Lauda Air in Vienna to fly back to Australia,” Jones recalled.

“I was sitting there and heard this voice come over the PA, and I said, ‘that’s Niki’.

“She said, ‘well, tell the hostie,’ and I said, ‘is that Mr. Lauda up there?’ The hostie wouldn’t tell me because she probably thought ‘who is this bloke wanting to know?’.

“I said, ‘just tell him that Alan Jones is down the back’.

“Anyway, she came back and said, ‘Niki said come up’, so I went up to the cockpit and stayed there virtually the whole trip.

“What happened was that Niki’s captain phoned in crook for that flight to go to Vienna, so in typical Niki style, had an old sports coat on, his old red Parmalat hat, jumped in the car, went to the airport, took over as captain of the 777 and flew to Malaysia with 300 people on board.”

Very moving to see his picture there and his helmet on top of a wooden box, knowing he's inside it. A really sad sight to see.

It seems that just about everyone turned up for his service. All the old and new Ferrari bosses, Flavio Briatore, the current FIA and Liberty owners, drivers Jackie Stewart, Lewis Hamilton, Toto Wolff, Helmut Marko and Christian Horner, Coulthard, Alesi, Piquet, Prost, Laffite, Jacky Ickx, Nigel Mansell, Mark Webber, Alex Wurz, Nico Rosberg, George Russell and Arturo Merzario (in his trademark stetson).

No word on Marlene, his ex-wife...Bernie Ecclestone also refused to go, stating he doesn't attend the funeral of friends.

Also attended by some Hollywood names....Ron Howard (who produced the Rush movie) Daniel Brüehl (who played the part of Lauda in the movie), even fellow Austrian Arnold Schwarzenegger.

@PTRACER Yes a very moving picture at the funeral.

Apparently he was buried in his ex Ferrari racesuit. (At his request)

My dad always used to say, that Lauda thought nothing of his trophies and he actually used one to feed his dog with. Any credence to this story at all?

I know that in his Ferrari years he gave all his trophies at the time to the local service station in exchange for free car washes and stuff for life! He said his wife did not like having to clean them, and the garage could clean them from then on along with his car!
I have no reason to disbelieve the dog feeding story although I have never heard it before.... it fits in with his car wash story indicating the polishing of them was more hassle than he got from seeing them in his house.

Come to think of it I use one of the trophies I won as a cat food bowl. It is a Wedgewood bowl! Another one that had a lid I used to use as a 'mull bowl' in my long gone days of smoking weed! :haha:

Amusing tales from Niki about talks with Enzo first about 'this car is shit' and also about Niki's financial demands when he was negotiating his second year contract Enzo.

a re-print of 'To Hell and Back' will be released on February 27th.
Image

this was recommended to me back in the day by @Everso Biggyballies , and I enjoyed every page of it.
thanks again, buddy.

Maurice Hamilton is also writing a biography on Niki - to be released on May 14th.

presumably both cover-photos are renders - not the final product.
