Слава Родине, товарищ GP of Sochi
Mongols? Mongols!
The Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus' was part of the Mongol invasion of Europe, in which the Mongol Empire invaded and conquered Kievan Rus' in the 13th century, destroying numerous cities, including Ryazan, Kolomna, Moscow, Vladimir and Kiev, with the only major cities escaping destruction being Novgorod and Pskov.
The campaign was heralded by the Battle of the Kalka River in May 1223, which resulted in a Mongol victory over the forces of several Rus' principalities. The Mongols retreated, having gathered their intelligence which was the purpose of the reconnaissance-in-force. A full-scale invasion of Rus' by Batu Khan followed, from 1237 to 1242. The invasion was ended by the Mongol succession process upon the death of Ögedei Khan. All Rus' principalities were forced to submit to Mongol rule and became vassals of the Golden Horde, some of which lasted until 1480.
The invasion, facilitated by the beginning of the breakup of Kievan Rus' in the 13th century, had incalculable ramifications for the history of Eastern Europe, including the division of the East Slavic people into three separate nations: modern-day Russia, Ukraine and Belarus,[6] and the rise of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The Duchy of Moscow started its independence struggle from Mongols by the 15th century and expanded into the modern Russian Empire.

I Posted these in error in the GTP thread, so for those that dont read that thread, this is what we are facing weather-wise this weekend at Sochi.... Friday is likely to be less wet than Saturday and Sunday. Saturday they are predicting 75+mm of rain.
Could we end up with another Spa farce given the current level of flooding and the forecast.

Everso Biggyballies wrote: ↑2 years agoWell it seems this year it is pretty certain. Pictures and reports are saying it is already wet and the paddock is flooded... it even looks like the track is partially under water. with rain everyday the forecast, except for the possibility that Friday will not be wet all day.. Saturday it is expected to be wet all day and the worst weather for the weekend. with a minimum of 75mm falling.

Ferrari to debut updated F1 hybrid system at Russian GP
Ferrari has confirmed it will debut the updated hybrid system on its power unit at this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix, resigning Charles Leclerc to a (rear of) grid penalty.
We knew Ferrari, under the regs as allowed, had been planning to introduce their one allowed specification update per year on each of its power unit components. That was always planned as 'not until after Monza'.
Ferrari has now confirmed that Leclerc would be taking the updated power unit at Sochi, ahead of Sainz, due to his Hungarian engine destroying crash.

Ferrari has now confirmed that Leclerc would be taking the updated power unit at Sochi, ahead of Sainz, due to his Hungarian engine destroying crash.
https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/ferra ... p/6672699/It is understood that the power gain offered by the updated hybrid system will be less than 10bhp, but will nevertheless offer a small boost in the fight with McLaren for third in the constructors’ championship.
It means Leclerc will have to start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid as a result of taking a new power unit, having lost one of his earlier engines in the first-lap crash with Lance Stroll in Hungary.
Team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr will have to wait to get the updated hybrid system as part of a staggered approach between the drivers.
Ferrari always planned to avoid having both of its drivers start the same race from the back, with Leclerc getting priority due to concerns over his energy store that was damaged in the same Hungary crash.

Just a reminder that it is a good support programme on this weekend, and we get to see F1, F2 and F3 all here.
Moving on, time for a bit of info.....

When was the track built?
Designed by Hermann Tilke, the Sochi Autodrom is effectively a street circuit, evolving out of the internal roads of the park built for the city’s 2014 Winter Olympics.
When was its first Grand Prix?
Formula 1’s first ever Russian Grand Prix took place on October 12 2014. The race was won by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who was midway through a five-race winning streak that would ultimately see him clinch that year’s drivers’ title.
Of course there was a Russian Gp long before 2014.... indeed, over 100 years before, pre WW1. We had one in 1913 at St Petersburg. The bad news is Mercedes (well, Benz as it was then) won that as well so are undefeated in the Russian Gp since 1913.....They won in 1914 as well. The First World War and the Russian Civil War, came along then and the Russian Grand Prix was abandoned until....
Suvorin in his Benz wins in 1913.
Actually we nearly had one in the 1980's, when plans were made to host one in Moscow for the 1983 season (as the Grand Prix of the Soviet Union)..... but these plans fell through.
Of course in two years time we go full circle and return to St. Petersburg again, when, from 2023 onwards, it will take place at the newly constructed circuit called Igora Drive. It was meant to host DTM the year Covid came along and it never happened. It did host a local GT4 race though. (That was also won by a Mercedes! )
Back to this year and Sochi.....
Tyres. With help from Pirelli
For the first time since Austria, the three softest compounds in the range have been nominated for this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix: C3 as the P Zero White hard, C4 as the P Zero Yellow medium, and C5 as the P Zero Red soft. This is the same nomination that was made in Russia last season, when the event was held at a similar time of year.
• Sochi is a low severity track and the track surface has been steadily maturing since the asphalt was originally laid nearly a decade ago. As a result, the softest rubber in the P Zero range is the perfect choice for the Russian track.
TRACK CHARACTERISTICS
• The corners located around Sochi’s Olympic Park are generally slow to medium speed, with a number of 90-degree turns. In general, the circuit is all about traction and braking, so it’s rear-limited. The most demanding corner (and the only front-limited corner) is Turn 3: a multi-apex left-hander that is similar in some ways to Istanbul’s famous Turn 8 in Turkey, which is next grand prix on the calendar.
• Teams tend to run medium to low downforce, on account of Sochi’s quite long straights, which places the emphasis on mechanical grip from the tyres.
• The track is not used a lot during the season, so it’s often particularly ‘green’ and slippery towards the start of the weekend. This can sometimes cause the tyres to slide rather than grip, especially during Friday’s free practice sessions but, as was the case last year, graining usually reduces a lot between free practice and the race due to track evolution.
Russia has traditionally been a one-stop race, and this was mostly the case last year as well. The top two finishers used a medium to hard strategy, but there was plenty of variation further down the order with some drivers starting on the soft, and three competitors using all three compounds in a two-stopper as well.
Of course that is if the race is dry.....
The reality is it will be wetter than Spa and will likely be won by Maylander.
Maybe that will be a win for Aston Martin.... (if that is the SC for the weekend)
@MonteCristo. @theracer120 (others talk amongst yourselves for a sec. )
looking at the schedule for this weekend it seems everything in Aus time is an hour earlier than usual. ie Race and qualy both start 22:00; Practice 1 is18:30 - 19:30 etc

Friday still looking the best day (No rain at the session times) and Saturday the worst, but Sunday seems to have showers forecast now rather than just rain.

Yeah it looks very windy but although it looks a little damp no sign of rain. In fact atm the sun is shining. But tomorrow was always the worry from the forecast, followed by Sunday slightly less severe and Friday always less of a worry in terms of rainfall.
The floodwater we saw during the week seems to have all dissipated too.

Found a weather radar link for the Sochi area. We seem to be between rain-bands atm, but clear for the next hour or so.
