The first lap of the 400-mile race saw Harold Kite (#01) and Rock Harn (#32) spin each other out coming through Turn 3. As Harn was hit by Sonny Hutchins (#90) and Frank Warren (#79) along the outside barrier, Kite sild down the banking and into the path of Jimmy Helms (#53), who rammed him in the drivers side area at around 120mph.
Kite, making his first Grand National start in a decade, was rushed to the infield care center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
