On Lap 14, Larry Smith cut a tire and slammed the outside wall. Smith, the defending NASCAR Rookie of The Year, died instantly from major head injuries. Reports later indicated that Smith's helmet had been irritating his scalp for some time, and he tore out all of the padding and inner liner. The lack of padding would've made his helmet virtually ineffective in protecting him in an accident.
