With three laps to go in the Poulan Pro 500k ARCA race, Chris Gehrke (#19) was clipped from behind by Donnie Moran in the tri-oval. Gehrke's Oldsmobile spun backwards, blowing over onto its roof just past the start/finish line. The car smashed the outside wall, then came to rest in the middle of the racing line, while the rest of the pack attempted take evasive action to avoid the stranded vehicle. Carl Miskotten Jr. was unable to avoid Gehrke and t-boned his car at well over 180mph; Miskotten's car bursting into flames as it careened into the infield grass. Both Gehrke and Miskotten's cars had to be cut open to extricate the two drivers.
Gehrke, 25, was airlifted to Carraway Medical Center, where he passed away the following day resulting from serious head trauma. Miskotten was taken to UAB Hospital with serious internal chest and head injuries, virtually ending his racing career.
