On Lap 251, Lennie Pond (#54) was clipped from behind by Ralph Jones (#08) coming out of Turn 4, sending both cars into the outside wall. Jones, with the throttle stuck and unable to turn, slammed almost head-on into the inside wall at a high rate of speed. The car ricocheted back towards the racing line as his Ford burst into flames before coming to a stop. Several crew members from multiple teams quickly rushed to the aid of the unconscious Jones, helping to put out the growing blaze. Jones was not seriously injured. The vicious hit left a hole in the inside wall that took several caution laps to repair.
