The second time was because his lifestyle made him pretty much broke.

What I do know is that the test was described as a Firestoner Tyre Test.... Both Hesketh and Iso Marlboro /FW were Firestone contracted teams. It was 16th May 1974. I might try and scour the Motorsport Mag of June to see if any mentions / references to if other drivers played swapsie.

@Michael Ferner mentioned something about L'il Art having a broken finger... I looked at the Belgian GP, at Nivelles, held a couple of days before the mid-week tyre test and Art DNF'd there, not with damage but a transmission failure so no real clues as to why Hunt was doing a tyre test in Art's car beyond the common use of Firestone to both Hesketh and Iso Marlboro.

Re the Art injury, the race after Belgium was Monaco and Art was involved in the first lap pile up.... As an aside FW only turned up at Monaco with one car, no entry for Van Lennep. Come the next race at Anderstorp. Art did not start (although he tried to practice but was unable to drive with his damaged hand) and was replaced by Robarts by qualifying.. As mentioned by Michael Art had broken his finger in a Sports Car Race at Imola. Belso was in the second Iso. Belso had a suspension failure in the warm up and damaged his Iso to much to be repaired.... so Robans was made to stand down and Belso took his car. Are we keeping up? So Robarts did not start.

FWIW Belso started 21st and finished 8th in Robarts / Arts car, (albeit with #21 on it not #20)

All of which does not give any clues or offer any reasons why Hunt was driving and Iso Marlboro at the Firestone Tyre Test.

(Maybe Hesketh were not doing the test and James offered his services to Marlboro for a few cartons of ciggies :haha: )

Found another pic.
Image

Edit: Scoured the June 1974 issue of Motorsport and no mention of tyre testing at Anderstorp..... not even anything at the end of the Belgian GP report to suggest they were going to Anderstorp for a Firestone tyre test.... but the James photo is dated as 16th May 1974 at Anderstorp.

Not strictly true.... although I am sure his lifestyle was costly, when he retired he was given some bad financiall advice and had invested much of his money in the in Lloyds of London (I think something to do with insuraance). It failed miserably and he and many others lost all but a small percentage of their initial investment. He went from financial security to close to bankruptcy as a result. I believe it was in effect some sort of scam, certainly improper advise. I believe it was something along the lines of investing money to cover insurance. payouts, and was a process of being able to offset income tax payments in the days of Supertax (over 90% of income paid in taxes back then. Unfortunately James invested at a time when there was a sudden rush of asbestos related huge insurance claims that although known about were not advised to the investors ie James. Thus James and others suddenly became liable as technically underwriters to huge insurance claims. Im sure there will be stuff online about it because many big names got caught up in it and in effect lost their fortunes..

That is the primary reason why he was financially troubled. But yes the looking at a return from retirement was financially driven and nothing to do with a love of or missing driving. He retired because he did not want to become a racing casualty as so many of his colleagues had. When he tested the FW12 I read somewhere he was 5 seconds / lap off the pace and the idea quickly fizzled out.

Interestingly it has been revealed that despite his high-profile role on the BBC, it’s believed he was only paid a paltry £200 per race.

An interesting car this one, this would be the only time the Hendrick team would use #80. Who, when and where?

I would say Tony Trimmer in a McLaren M18 F5000 c 1973. Ill say Oulton Park because im 99% sure its not Mallory and I dont think its Brands. Trimmers helmet was dark. I remember him being backed by the Portobello Inn which was a favourite stop off pub on the way home from Brands!

Having said that Trimmer missed the back end of the year and the car was driven by a number of different drivers, I think Arie Luyendijk was one. Nelleman another. I think he drove it an the Danish Round (Jylandsring?). If its not Trimmer Ill go for Nelleman!

You're a smart guy! It is Tony Trimmer's McLaren, but it's not Tony Trimmer driving  Nor is it Jac Nelleman, Mallory or Brands!

If its not Arie Lyundijk or Jac Nelleman and its not TT it must be Bernie Bird and that brings Snetterton into play..

Oh wait, you never said it wasnt Lyundijk. He would have done the Zandvoort meeting. I always thought he had a very bright helmet but maybe that was in Indycar.

So Arie at Zandvoort or Bernie Bird at Snetterton..... probably in that order :fingers:

@PTRACER Curious to know if I was on the right track? :dunno:
IIf it wasnt Trimmer it wasnt Oulton Park.

So going with Luyendijk at Zandvoort. If not Arie then Bird at Snetterton. If it is 1973 which I think it was.

 That's the one! Actually I thought the Marlboro logos on the kerbing would give the track away quite easily.
