The Fastlane joins forces with the GPL community

#1

Post by PTRACER »

Between 26th and 28th Jan, the GPLAltern and GPLRACER forums will be merged to form a new forum in the style of the original SimRacing Mirror Zone (SRMZ). This new SRMZ will be hosted at a subdomain of the-fastlane.co.uk

For those who are not aware, SRMZ.net was the main home of the Grand Prix Legends community for a good 15 years. Last year it went offline unexpectedly and never came back and the GPL Altern forum (which was set up as a temporary hangout for whenever SRMZ went down - which it frequently did) suddenly found itself as the community's new home.

However, GPL Altern was never meant as a full-time replacement for the GPL community and due the death of GPL Altern's domain owner in Jan 2023, no one fully owns it or is in full control of it. Since law prevents the transfer of the domain to another person it is inevitable the domain will at some point be switched off.

Given my experience of forum hosting, Stefan Ross (GPL Altern admin) has agreed for The Fastlane to become the new host. More info will be posted later or you can refer to the announcememt here:

So will there be an influx of new members here then? Interesting and exciting  If there is, I wonder how many of them @XcraigX can sign up to GTP 2024 :haha:

Cool! Will they join our community fully or will they only be available through backdoor channels?

Although I can't set up a complete connection, it is possible that some will join here, yes! There will be a permanent link here on the new forum's homepage so this site will just be a click away :D

So, do we have at least two people in charge of this forum, so if one gets hit by a bus, the forum can continue uninterrupted, preserving all the accumulate wisdom presented here?

Hehe I think some people would argue one of me is already too much.

I think you raise a good point Ruslan. No one has access to anything but me. I think it's time to change that. Who can I appoint to be keeper of the archive?

Where are you located?

I have a lot on my plate right now, so probably would not volunteer. If you are in UK, then someone nearby might be best (so they can easily call if there is an issue).

The Land of the Rising Sun!

No one needs physical access to anyone, i just need to setup FTP access so someone can download the files once in a while :)

Sorry, didn't notice the red sun on your flag.

So, probably just need a volunteer from anywhere for back-up. Are there any volunteers out there... so the site can celebrate its 30th birthday. 40th birthday, 100th birthday (if F1 still exists), etc.?

I left this thread for a little while and there's no takers. Does that mean the forum and CPdB dies with me? :D

Well, I am much older than you, so that means I'm out. Can't afford the time, anyway.

Well, it's the person whose face I wash every morning when I wake up, and who I feed and accompany all day long. Other than that, I don't really know him...
