All motorcycle road racing in Northern Ireland cancelled, Brexit blamed

I know @Andy wont like this news, given his passion for proper Road Racing, wherever it might be. Obviously the IOM is not directly affected .... it might be adjacent to Ireland but isnt part of it and is self governing. However it will be affected given so mny TT competitors use the North West 200 as a warm up event to the IoM. Hopefully the Northern Ireland situation will be rectified and we can look forward to news of a racing return.... but the bottom line with such itms of cost such as insurance all needing to be covered by increased costs to competitors and ultimately also the spectators who have to shell out for tickets.

If the insurance costs for riders to run have increased so dramatically long term the entry fees and such will have to be given a big hike to cover. Those costs will have to be covered by a rise in sponsorship needs and budgets..... that in turn is again a bigger issue for the grass roots teams that survive on smaller local industry type sponsorship from family friends etc, with the larger teams with greater resources more likely to be able to command more funding.

Of course the events also get local council funding,, but given the overall state of economies particularly in Norther Ireland the funding just isnt available let alone at an increased level.

But with all racing in NI cancelled it isnt a problem that is going to be quickly resolved. Of course the spin off is that local businesses who survived on the trade from the events, the meals, the hotels and general shops are all going to miss what would be a big chunk of their usual annual income.
All motorcycle road racing in Northern Ireland cancelled, Brexit blamed

The Motorcycle Union of Ireland has announced that all road racing and short circuit racing in Northern Ireland has been cancelled due to spiralling insurance costs.

Rising insurance costs has been an issue across all of Ireland in recent years, but has mainly affected the smaller road racing events.

However, in a hammer blow to the sport of motorcycle racing in Northern Ireland, all events including the country’s largest outdoor sporting meeting, the North West 200 has had to be called off for 2023. It was reported the North West 200 contributed £17m to the local economy last year.

In a statement released by the MCUI, it says the cost of public liability insurance has become unsustainable for event organisers and clubs, with a BBC report suggesting a figure of over £400,000 having been quoted which would have seen costs triple.

Road racing has survived over 100 years in Northern Ireland, but funding issues have become more prominent, with the Ulster Grand Prix the most notable race to have been affected since a poorly-attended 2019 event.

A statement from Motorcycling Ireland also highlighted Brexit, which Northern Ireland voted against in the 2016 referendum, as a major contributing factor to the bleak situation surrounding insurance costs.

“The end of 2021 when we scheduled our annual meeting with our broker, [we learned] that [they] would no longer be able to deal with us due to Brexit,” the statement read.

“They did send our details on to another broker, who took us on.

“Last October 2022, we received an email from our new broker saying insurance company Allianz, who we have been covered with for years, would no longer insure us as they were no longer covering motorsport, and they have reached out to other companies but that no one would take us on.”

The statement added that Motorcycling Ireland’s old broker has put it in contact with three others, and they are currently “trying to persuade insurance companies to take us on”.

The MCUI says it will continue to seek public liability insurance this year and will continue to issue licenses to competitors so that they can compete in other events.

However, there will be no road racing or short circuit racing held in Northern Ireland this year.

This will come as a blow to competitors of the Isle of Man TT, who have traditionally used the North West 200 as a warm-up to the TT.

The already fragile future for motorcycle road racing in Northern Ireland looks even more bleak in the wake of this latest setback.

Part of the problem is the fact that road racing is a sport in which spectators can view for free – though the Ulster GP was propped up by a piece of government legislation that deemed anyone entering the circuit confines during road closure times had to pay to be there.

Former racer and multiple TT winner Phillip McCallen told BBC Radio Ulster that the attitude around road racing being a free-to-view sport has to change if it is to have a future.

"It's an absolute disaster," McCallen, who is a director of the Revival Racing Motorcycle Club which took over running the North West 200, said. "The general public have had free racing and free viewing for 50 years and some people expect that to continue but it can't.

"You don't go to Windsor Park and get in for nothing, so you shouldn't have free spectating at the North West 200, for example.

"It's about how we get that money from people into the organisation."

The North West 200 was already facing an uncertain future after the 2022 event, with former NW200 race director Mervyn Whyte saying last year that the Colerain and District Motor Club needed additional funding support from Tourism NI or it could face a situation where "we may not run the event" in the future.

Last October, the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council put a decision to provide more funding for the 2023 North West 200 on hold. The increase in funding was expected to be around £96,000 to bring total contributions up to £275,000.

I just stumbled upon this while browsing the internet. Thank you for having it shared here already @Everso Biggyballies.

I'd really like to hear @Andy's opinion on it and what he thinks/fears the consequences might be for Road Racing in general - at least in NI. I'm not sure how this would affect the (e. g.) Czech road races.
But once the precedent is set, I can see it become complicated, to re-establish these events.

Well in the last 24 hours there has been an update.... not a reversal but a sign of hope that not all is lost, certainly for the major events like the North West 200.

Rescue package being worked on to save Northern Irish road racing in 2023

On Friday organisers for the North West 200 – Northern Ireland’s biggest outdoor sporting event – say they “have not given up” on staging this year’s edition from 7-13 May.

Now the MCUI has followed up its statement from Thursday with a new one claiming it is working on a rescue package to “prevent the loss of Northern Ireland’s prime road racing events”.

Pretty much spot on with what they would end up having to do, the MCUI says clubs are prepared to pay some of the increase in insurance costs through additional sponsorship and an increase to entry fees. So the competitors are going to have to pay some of the shortfall through a hike in entry fees, and that in itself these days will make if difficult for the non professional teams.

However, it believes there will be a shortfall still of £200k as well as a capped £300k excess set to be introduced, which will a need to raise half a million pounds.

It is hopeful that it can negotiated a reduction in this amount with insurers, while a crowdfunding campaign is also being considered.
“We cannot afford the premium hikes [in insurance costs], but nor can we afford to stop the events,” John Dillon, MCUI chairman, said.

“Members of the MCUI (UC) board and I are now urgently pursuing a series of options and sources including the launch of a crowdfunding campaign.

“If racing doesn’t take place in 2023, not only will it be nearly impossible to bring it back in 2024, we will also lose the new riders coming through the ranks.

“There has been a groundswell of support from across all sections of the media and it is clear that we have the support of all race fans making the option or crowdfunding a real option to save our sport.”
Sadly when it comes down to be looking at a crowdfunding campaign at the end of the day thats no difference to paying a major increased admission. Hopefully some wealthy people will come to the party.

The fact they say if it doesnt happen this year it is unlikely it will next year either is a worry.

:fingers: :fingers: Fingers crossed they can find a wealthy sponsor who will kick in, but they are talking a half million pound deficit to cover its going to be a huge struggle. Until they say its not going to happen then there is hope. Its such a catch 22 scenario really, thy cant afford to run it but they cant afford not to run it.

Not running it will mean many locals who provide hospitality are going to miss out on a fair bit of income as well. Income I am sure they need after Covid and the overall general economic situation.

As a long time road racing fan and orange army member I know most true fans would be willing to pay to watch. Could not a volunteery £5/10 be paid and collected.

Brilliant news. I was hoping something like this would turn up out of the doom and gloom initial thoughts.
