The fire extinguisher of Olivier Panis' Toyota went of while being on the Hangar straight at Silverstone 2004. Trackside marshals had to help Olivier to get out of his car, his helmet being full of foam.Strange DNF Reasons

Derek Warwick was deliberately under fuelled in the 1982 British GP to give a sponsor pleasing competitive performance, while it lasted.

Not high up on the 'strange' list, but nonetheless unusual...Raikkonen, Hamilton and Rosberg colliding with each other in the pit exit at Montreal, because of a strange rule that said drivers cannot exit the pits if the red light is on. Raikkonen saw it, the guys behind didn't.

Yeah, "strange rule", that. Stopping at a red light, who in their right mind could ever have dreamed up such a nonsense!! What will be next, expecting drivers to stop when faced with a red flag???

Adrian Fernandez @ Belle Isle 2000. Tear-off visor got sucked into the turbo inlet during a pitstop and somehow blocked the throttle senor causing him to crash out of the race. From 43:50 in the video:

A.J Foyt was parked in the 1988 Winston 500 after a series of bizarre and dangerous tantrums.
It started when Foyt and Alan Kulwicki rubbed and banged against eachother during a caution, it's not known what lead to this, but both Foyt and Kulwicki were black flagged by NASCAR and held in the pits for one lap.
As Foyt left the pits, he proceeded to swerve at Kulwicki's car on purpose, nearly sideswiping it. Foyt was again black flagged and ordered into the pits for another lap. Foyt complied and came back to pit road, but hardly slowed down, intentionally driving close to a group of NASCAR officials, even driving behind one of them as he sped back onto the racetrack. Foyt was black flagged a third time, and ordered to the garage for the rest of the race. He again sped onto pit road, locking his brakes up just prior to the garage exit and spun out.
Following the incident, NASCAR suspended Foyt for 6 months and fined him $5,000. This penalty was later changed, with the suspension lifted and fine increased to $7,500.

Steve Park suffered serious injuries which almost ended his racing career after a strange incident in the 2001 South Carolina 200 at Darlington.
The field was under an early race caution, initially caused by light rain when Park's car suddenly veered left towards the inside wall. At the same time, Larry Foyt was speeding around the inside of the field as he was a lap down, NASCAR rules at the time allowed lapped cars to restart on the inside, while cars on the lead lap started on the outside. Park's car happened to veer left right as Foyt was passing him, causing Foyt's car to make heavy contact with the drivers side door with both cars sustaining heavy damage.
It was later revealed that Park's steering wheel came off in his hands, which caused the car to veer into Foyt's path. Park missed the rest of the 2001 season and the first 4 races of 2002 as a result of his injuries, and never achieved the same heights he had reached prior to the accident.

Since I mentioned tear-off visor already I just remembered that Jack Miller retired with an overheated engine from the 2020 Misano GP when Fabio Quartararo's visor got sucked into the Ducati's air filter. Some fan later bought the visor for 4k quid.

Similar fate to Barrichello at Monaco in a Williams in 2010. He is showing as having retired due to an accident, but.....Nononsensecapeesh wrote: ↑1 year ago Juan Pablo Montoya running over a loose drain cover in the 2005 Chinese Grand Prix.
Williams Formula One team said on Friday that Rubens Barrichello’s crash in the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend was caused when his car’s left rear wheel struck a loose drain cover.
A team statement said: “AT&T Williams confirmed today that the cause of Rubens Barrichello’s crash at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, May 16, 2010, was a loose manhole cover at turn two. As Rubens’ car drove over the manhole cover, the cover was spun up and hit the rear left wheel, causing failure. The car was badly damaged in the ensuing crash which ended Rubens’ race. This incident has been reported to the FIA.”

Also Bernd Maylaender in the DTM non-championship 2004 Shanghai race which was abandoned because of this. They held another one later on the same day.
So technically hitting a manhole cover isn't that strange at all
