Foyt parks the 11 this weekend. Meaning that their highest ranked car (owner’s points) won’t run. Big oof.

I read elsewhere that TK was going to be asked to drive this weekend but was unable to because he is committed to race elsewhere this weekend.... the SRX racing event in Missouri,
(After running four SRX races in 2021, Tony Kanaan will run all SRX events in 2022 with the exception of Stafford.)

I wonder also what the car sponsor implications would be.

Rossi leads Pagenaud in opening practice

Alexander Rossi topped the times in first practice at Toronto ahead of defending race-winner Simon Pagenaud, A bit of a change from Rossi's biff and bash Mid-Ohio outing. (Although Power had his best lap hindered inadvertently by Rossi, and ended up ninth.)

Graham Rahal was also within a tenth of the outright pace in third, with championship leader Marcus Ericsson (Chip Ganassi Racing) and two-time Toronto winner Josef Newgarden (Team Penske) completing the top five.

Mr "How many contracts do you need" Palou was tenth.

With too many people then hitting the track in the closing minutes, there wasn’t enough time for anyone to improve, preserving Rossi's position atop the times.

Separate issue:

IndyCar drivers slam ‘dangerous’ Toronto pit lane

IndyCar drivers have criticised Toronto’s crowded pit lane, with Graham Rahal branding it “dangerous”.

Exhibition Place’s winding pit lane is an even tighter squeeze this weekend, with 25 cars to fit in compared to the 22 that were entered in the last visit, in 2019.

While the boxes are 35 feet (10.7m) long, the same as the previous Toronto event and also the previous event of the current season at Mid-Ohio, the situation is far from ideal, and would have been even worse if not for AJ Foyt Racing shedding an entry due to sponsorship trouble.

Graham Rahal is perhaps most affected given, until the race, the pit wall behind his box has been left open in order to provide access for vehicles, meaning his timing stand is not visible from the seat of the #15 car.

25 Josef Newgarden United States Team Penske 1 1'21.9432 21.8961 78.464

The first casualty of the session was Josef Newgarden,
who felt his Chevrolet go into “engine protection mode” so that he had to cruise back to the pits and was done for the session.

Palou hits the wall (both sides)

Grosjean also, but one side only

With just a minute remaining, Takuma Sato struck the wall hard in Turn 6
and had to stop, which effectively ended the session early.

IndyCar drivers want Toronto track to revert to pre-2016 layout

More on the drivers thoughts of the track.....
Alexander Rossi, Josef Newgarden and Graham Rahal are all hoping next year’s Toronto street course around Exhibition Place can return to its ‘classic’ layout.

Rossi compared the current Toronto layout unfavourably with other street courses on the IndyCar schedule saying that “the last three corners is what makes it tough from an enjoyment standpoint,” while Rahal said: “the track was significantly more fun the other way. Not even close. Yeah, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. I wish we could go back tomorrow and run the old track. I understand there are challenges there.

Construction work for the Toronto X hotel in 2016 obliged organisers to substantially alter the final sector of the course, as well as shifting the pitlane from driver’s right to driver’s left.

The result is a pitlane that arcs sharp left on entry at Turn 9, then right at Turn 10, then left at pit exit off the final corner.
Construction work for the Toronto X hotel in 2016 obliged organisers to ask track designer Tony Cotman to substantially alter the final sector of the course, as well as shifting the pitlane from driver’s right to driver’s left.

The result is a pitlane that arcs sharp left on entry at Turn 9, then right at Turn 10, then left at pit exit off the final corner.

“Pitlane under yellow, where everybody is stopping at the same time. [It] could be hell.”

First repeat pole of the year I heard mention of. I thought they meant first repeat pole for Palou, at first but then I realised he had not got a pole this year until today.

On a different note it's time to have a closer look at how we got about qualifying. It was bad with 22 full time cars, with 26 it's mayhem.
