Nürburgring Wednesday Notebook
Sportscar365’s Wednesday notebook from the N24 paddock at the Nürburgring…

***A field of 137 cars is gearing up for the Nürburgring 24 this weekend. One notable withdrawal from the original 138-car entry list is the popular ‘foxtail’ Opel Manta, which was unable to be repaired in time after being burned in a fire at its workshop.

***The traditional Adenauer Racing Day took place on Wednesday, held in the center of Adenau town near the circuit. The event, which drew a large crowd of fans, featured appearances from teams and drivers as well as a parade that saw a significant number of the top GT3 entries driving down public roads near the Nordschleife.

***A large crowd is expected for the 50th N24 edition, which is also the first since 2019 without restrictions on spectator numbers due to coronavirus pandemic measures. The 2020 race permitted a small number of fans in the main grandstands, while last year there was an attendance limit of 10,000. This year the campsites opened at 8 a.m. on Monday and by Wednesday tents could be seen all around the Nordschleife.

***Aston Martin factory driver Nicki Thiim spent the morning mountain biking through the Eifel forest to see the many camping areas. “There’s like a nice road all the way around the track,” he told Sportscar365. “I just wanted to have a glimpse at all the crazy shit going on out there.”

***The most recent Balance of Performance update for the event was communicated on May 20. It granted a 10 kg weight reduction for the fleet of seven Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo IIs, a turbo boost increase for the TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage GT3 and a slight air restrictor diameter increase for the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evos, giving them an extra 3 hp.

***Frederik Schandorff has joined the No. 29 Dinamic Motorsport lineup alongside Christian Engelhart, Matteo Cairoli and Adrien de Leener. Schandorff is set for his debut in the Porsche 911 GT3 R, having raced in other series this year aboard McLaren 720S GT3s entered by Inception Racing.

***Engelhart and Cairoli are pulling double-duty across the two Dinamic Porsches, which are running on Pirelli tires. Come Ledogar and Thomas Preining join them in the No. 28 entry. Dinamic has done several Nordschleife races, but this marks its first N24 attempt in the SP9 class.

***Jean Todt and Jochen Neerpasch are BMW M Motorsport’s guests of honor this weekend. Former FIA President Todt accepted the invitation from a delegation of BMW M Motorsport representatives at last year’s FIA Gala. Neerpasch was the first director of BMW Motorsport and founded both renditions of the BMW Junior Team.

***Nicky Catsburg feels there is “hidden potential” still to be found in the BMW M4 GT3 despite the car racking up several victories in recent weeks. “In 2022, we have already done some racing with the new car, but we are definitely not as far as we were with the BMW M6 GT3,” he said. “I do believe that this new car is better already, but I think there is still some hidden potential.”

***Mercedes-AMG has gone with a different approach to the lineup combinations of its factory-backed entries. Its three-driver crews contrast with the quartets deployed by Audi and BMW. Last year the ‘Mercedes-AMG Team’ entries featured four drivers. Most of the factory-driven Porsche 911 GT3 Rs have four-man crews.

***The Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo is set to race at the next two editions of the Nürburgring 24 beyond this one, after the manufacturer stated its intention to keep the current model around until the end of 2024. As reported by Sportscar365 last week, Mercedes-AMG is looking to introduce a new GT3 product in 2025.

***Glickenhaus Racing has brought several aero updates to its SCG 004C ahead of the car’s third N24 attempt in the SP-X class. Team principal Luca Ciancetti told Sportscar365 that Glickenhaus technical partner Podium Advanced Technologies went “more aggressive” on the aero in a bid to generate more downforce through high-speed corners. The updates include reprofiled sections of the diffuser and splitter and a modified section on each side ahead of the rear wheels.

***The Glickenhaus team has added special stickers to the 004C’s engine cover, one in tribute to a former Nürburgring employee who passed away recently, and the other in recognition of the absent Opel Manta entry.

***Followers of SRO America will recognize the name of U.S racer Jeff Ricca, who is making his N24 debut in a Mertens Motorsport Hyundai i30N. Ricca has driven Hyundai machinery in the TC America category for several years and has recently made a handful of NLS appearances in preparation for the 24.

***Octane126 faced a challenge to rebuild its Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo 2020 in time for the event, after an accident during the N24 Qualifiers caused significant front-end damage. The Swiss outfit has pitched up at the Nürburgring with its Ferrari dressed in a new gold design, after previously competing in dark blue and red.

***The team outlined its recent hardships in a blog post, where it also voiced dissatisfaction at recent sporting decisions and questioned the BoP process, describing the Ferrari as “weak and slower like never before” heading into this weekend. Octane126 claims that it is feeling the effects of horsepower being taken away since 2020, resulting in a 10.74 km/h (6.67 mph) deficit on the Dottinger Hohe straight.

***There are two Ferraris in the field, with the Racing One squad joining after missing the Qualifiers due to an accident in the build-up to that event. Its car is constructed to the first 488 GT3 Evo specification from 2018.

***Racing One announced its driver lineup on Tuesday: Jeroen Bleekemolen, Nick Foster, Jules Szymkowiak and Christian Kohlhaas will share the wheel. Factoring in this year, Bleekemolen has driven five different car types in his last five N24 appearances: Ferrari (2022), Audi (2019), Mercedes-AMG (2018), Glickenhaus (2016) and Bentley (2015).

***Toksport WRT has sold all three of its Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evos to other customer teams, according to team principal Seyhun Duru. The German squad is now aligned with Porsche in GT3 competition after splitting with Mercedes-AMG due to what Duru has described as “lack of understanding” between the parties.

***Fifteen of the places in Friday evening’s Top Qualifying 2 shootout, which determines the N24 pole, are already confirmed based on previous race results. Click Here for the full list.

***Four Top Qualifying 2 berths are still up for grabs, with the four fastest Top Qualifying 1 cars advancing through to the final session. A dozen SP9 Pro entries are not locked in for Top Qualifying 2.

***Thursday’s N24 track action consists of two qualifying sessions, which are essentially used for practice and setup. The first is due to start at 12:30 p.m. CEST (6:30 a.m. ET) and lasts 90 minutes. The second session will last three hours and gets underway at 8:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. ET).

Land: Audi Decision Caused Team to Skip N24
Land-Motorsport’s Christian Land says N24 entry did not materialize due to Audi Sport decision…

Audi Sport denied Land-Motorsport a factory-supported entry into the Nürburgring 24 because the team lacked a privateer car, according to team manager Christian Land.

Land was quoted in a social media post on Monday as saying that “a decision by Audi” caused the 2017 N24-winning squad to miss the event which takes place this weekend.

He cited the absence of a privateer, customer-led Audi entry from the team as the reason why Audi Sport did not grant extended support such as factory drivers.

Car Collection Motorsport and Phoenix Racing are carrying the ‘Audi Sport Team’ banners at this year’s edition of the Eifel enduro.

Both are also running private cars, while in recent years Land-Motorsport held one of the factory-assisted entries without fielding a separate independent Audi.

Sportscar365 has contacted Audi Sport for comment.

“It was a decision by Audi,” said Land.

“The requirements for teams were different this year than in the past.

“For example, the allocation of customer racing cars was linked to fielding additional private cars. However, a privately entered car did not come together this year.

“Since we could not fulfil this criterion, we did not get a chance for a customer racing entry.

“That’s a shame because we have great memories of our 24-hour races with Audi. Nevertheless, we have to accept the decision.

“I can already promise that we will be back on the grid next year to fight for victory! We wish the participants all the best and the fans lots of fun.”

Land-Motorsport dramatically won the 2017 edition of the N24 with Connor De Phillippi, Kelvin van der Linde, Christopher Mies and Markus Winkelhock driving.

The German squad is currently focusing on an ADAC GT Masters campaign with the new Evo II specification Audi GT3 car which was introduced to customer teams this year.

It also contested the opening round of the NLS season at the Nürburgring, finishing second in the season-opener with Mies and Jusuf Owega, however it did not return for round two or the N24 Qualifiers.

Catsburg Leads BMW 1-2 In Opening Session
Nicky Catsburg puts Rowe Racing up top in opening quali practice as N24 action starts…

Nicky Catsburg set the fastest time in the opening qualifying practice session for the Nürburgring 24 Hours, leading Walkenhorst Motorsport’s Christian Krognes in a BMW one-two.

The No. 98 Rowe Racing BMW M4 GT3 was at the top throughout the session, as Catsburg’s co-driver John Edwards set a 8:17.540 in the opening exchanges.

However, Catsburg reeled off a time of 8:14.771 later in the session to end up as the quickest.

Moments after the Dutchman set his best time, Krognes jumped to second place overall behind the wheel of the No. 101 Walkenhorst entry with 1.165 seconds separating the two cars.

The No. 12 Mercedes-AMG Team Bilstein entry, driven by Luca Stolz, completed the top three.

Toksport WRT took fourth with Julien Andlauer setting the fastest time, ahead of the No. 4 Team Getspeed Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo which rounded out the top five.

Audi Sport Team Phoenix ended the session sixth after Dries Vanthoor had initially put the No. 15 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II in second early on.

The German squad remained ahead of KCMG as well as the second Rowe Racing BMW, with TF Sport’s lone Aston Martin Vantage GT3 in ninth.

The top ten was rounded out by defending winner Manthey Racing and its No. 1 Porsche 911 GT3 R.

The first session of the weekend finished early, as barriers repaired were required after a crash for Thorsten Jung’s No. 131 Muelhner Motorsport Porsche 992 GT3 Cup.

Two GT3 cars suffered notable incidents, with the No. 21 CP Racing Mercedes of Joe Foster making contact with the No. 121 Toyota Corolla Altis and the No. 102 Walkenhorst BMW coming to a halt on track with Joerg Mueller at the wheel.

Track action at the Nürburgring continues with the second qualifying practice session at 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. ET).

That M4GT3 of Catsburg is a rocket ship. And a good looking one too.

The Historic Touring Cars on earlier were pretty good too.

Ludwig Takes Surprise Nürburgring 24 Pole in Ferrari
Luca Ludwig fires Octane126 to unexpected Ferrari pole for Nürburgring 24…

Luca Ludwig claimed an unexpected Nürburgring 24 pole for the Octane126 Ferrari squad, beating ROWE Racing BMW driver Augusto Farfus to lead the Top Qualifying shootout.

Ludwig set the No. 26 Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo 2020 on the front of the grid for tomorrow’s race start with a time of 8:09.469 on his first of two attempts around the 25 km circuit.

Nobody managed to improve on that effort during the second set of laps, ensuring the Swiss Octane126 team came away with the Glickenhaus Trophy on Friday evening.

Ludwig is sharing the Ferrari, which is a new chassis after an accident at the N24 Qualifiers, with Bjorn Grossmann, Simon Trummer and Jonathan Hirschi.

Farfus mustered an 8:10.640 on his opening attempt in the No. 99 ROWE Racing BMW M4 GT3, but the Brazilian didn’t improve at the second time of asking.

He ended up 1.171 seconds shy of Ludwig’s pole effort, while Jordan Pepper took third on the grid aboard the Konrad Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo.

Pepper improved on his second lap, posting a time of 8:10.788 to leapfrog Christopher Haase in the No. 22 Audi Sport Team Car Collection entry.

Kuba Giermaziak backed up Haase’s effort in the privateer No. 16 Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II by qualifying fifth, ahead of Dan Harper of the BMW Junior Team.

The fourth row of the grid is set to be shared by the No. 101 Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW driven by Christian Krognes and the No. 12 Bilstein-liveried Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo run by Haupt Racing Team and driven by Luca Stolz.

The best Porsche 911 GT3 R was the Huber Motorsport example, in which Nico Menzel attained ninth with an 8:11.928.

Menzel managed to put the Pro-Am Huber car ahead of Julien Andlauer, who was 14th for Toksport WRT, and Thomas Preining in 16th for Dinamic Motorsport.

The Manthey Racing Porsche that won last year’s N24 did not take part in Top Qualifying 2 after being sent to the back of the first starting group due to a penalty incurred during practice.

Four cars advanced to Top Qualifying 2 after setting the quickest times during the Top Qualifying 1 session that took place immediately beforehand.

They were the No. 98 ROWE Racing BMW, which set the Top Q1 pace in the hands of Nicky Catsburg, as well as the Porsches from Toksport and Dinamic, and the No. 4 GetSpeed Performance Mercedes-AMG.

GetSpeed had the best of those cars from that session courtesy of an 8:12.467 from Jules Gounon that set the German squad in 12th.

Some of the notable entries to fall short of Top Qualifying 2 were the Schubert Motorsport BMW (21st), Audi Sport Team Phoenix (22nd), the Porsches from Falken Motorsports and KCMG, and the TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage GT3 which qualified 26th.

Nürburgring Friday Notebook
Sportscar365’s Friday notebook on the eve of the 50th Nürburgring 24…

***Luca Ludwig’s pole position for Octane126 was Ferrari’s first at the Nürburgring 24 in 11 years, after Dominik Farnbacher took the 2011 pole in a Ferrari 458 Italia GT3. It also marked the first N24 pole for a non-German manufacturer since Jeff Westphal for Glickenhaus in 2017.

***Ludwig described his lap as “perfect” in the Goodyear-shod Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo 2020. “The tires were there, exactly on point,” he told Sportscar365. “Really happy for the team, and for myself considering I’m just doing a couple of races per year.”

***Goodyear interrupted a streak of four Michelin poles, while the American brand’s affiliated company Dunlop propelled the Glickenhaus to the 2017 top spot.

***In a rule change for this year’s N24, the cars in Top Qualifying started each session with full fuel tanks.

***Jordan Pepper was proud of Konrad Motorsport’s effort as the Lamborghini team banked another high grid position for the N24. Axcil Jefferies put Franz Konrad’s team on the front row last year. “It’s no secret that we enter this race with a lot less budget than the other manufacturers, but it doesn’t mean we have less heart,” Pepper said. “Franz has stuck with the Lamborghini and shown great speed, but we haven’t shown great race speed until the back end of last year. We can be quick for the race.”

***A full grid has not yet been published, but the combined results from Top Qualifying can be found here. The highest-placed car outside the SP9 was the No. 116 True Racing KTM X-Bow GT2, in which Tim Heinemann posted an 8:13.985 to take 23rd overall and the SP-X class pole.

***Glickenhaus Racing is “doubling down for a night” of work after a new electric water pump failed on its SP-X car just before Felipe Fernandez Laser took to the track for Top Qualifying 1. Team owner Jim Glickenhaus said: “We switched from mechanical to electric water pumps over the years to allow the water to circulate even when the engine is off in the pits. We have never had an issue before. We changed to a new pump earlier in the day, and it was running fine in earlier practice sessions.”

***Glickenhaus suggested that the team might need to swap out the SCG 004C’s engine for it to compete in the race.

***Head of Audi Sport Customer Racing Chris Reinke has insisted that there is “no bad blood” between the manufacturer and Land-Motorsport after the team revealed last week that an Audi decision resulted in it missing this weekend’s Nürburgring 24.

***Reinke told Sportscar365: “With the enthusiasm they drive Audis in various championships obviously they will be heartbroken that at the main event, there is no green Land-Motorsport car appearing. So are we. But therefore hopefully our future still goes on together.”

***Reinke clarified the status of the No. 24 Car Collection Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II, which is shown as entered under the ‘Audi Sport Team’ banner but is not officially one of the brand’s factory-supported entries. Instead, it is running in a Lionspeed livery. “It is not a strategic entry car, but if you look at the regulations, the team earned privileges which could be useful and therefore the car will run with a similar license [to the factory cars],” said Reinke.

***KCMG’s N24 program consists entirely of full-time staff after the team was loaned two prominent Manthey engineers for its last 24-hour outing at Daytona in January. The team’s Rolex 24 data engineer is working on the No. 1 Manthey Racing Porsche at the Nürburgring.

***KCMG team manager Matt Howson said: “We still get good support from the Porsche group, so it doesn’t feel like a disadvantage, but in terms of the execution of the stops and the rest of the race it’s all the same crew as Daytona.”

***Three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Kazuki Nakajima will drive a Toyota GR Supra Gran Turismo around the Nordschleife during the Toyota pre-race parade on Saturday. Former World Rally Championship driver Isolde Holderied will also take part, driving a Toyota GR 86 pace car.

***There are nine tire suppliers for the 50th N24: Michelin, Goodyear, Falken, Pirelli, Yokohama, Hankook, Giti, Nexen and Toyo. Of these, only five supply tires to the SP9 category. The majority of GT3 teams (23) run on Michelin, with Goodyear and Yokohama supplying three cars. Pirelli and Falken tires are used by two cars each.

***TF Sport driver David Pittard is going into his first N24 in anything other than a after contesting the last three editions of the race with Walkenhorst Motorsport. “As amazing a job Walkenhorst did — I cannot fault them at all and we did some really cool stuff together — but it’s nice to just have a refreshing change of scenery,” Pittard told Sportscar365.

***Maro Engel is having a change of scenery at the N24 by joining GetSpeed. The AMG factory ace, who is racing in SRO competition with the team, did this event with Black Falcon between 2016 and 2019, and Haupt Racing Team the last two years. Several key Black Falcon staff members moved to HRT when it purchased the two-time N24 winner’s assets in 2020, so Engel has been with familiar faces for most of his time at this race.

***GetSpeed Performance team principal Adam Osieka says he prefers having three-driver crews at the N24, after Mercedes-AMG streamlined its lineups. “I like it more because each driver has more track time because you share [the car] with three drivers, not four,” he told Sportscar365. “The preparation is better. You can give them more track time, which is very limited here.”

***GetSpeed is provisionally aiming to enter NLS rounds four and seven after the N24 has passed. Osieka also plans to engage in a winter program in the Gulf region, potentially taking in the Hankook 24 Hours of Dubai and the Asian Le Mans Series.

***Mercedes-AMG has the longest winless streak of the ‘big four’ German manufacturers at this race. Its last victory came in 2016 with Black Falcon, meaning it has missed out in the last five editions. Podium results were achieved by AMG teams in 2018, 2019 and last year.

***Continuing a theme from previous N24 races, the factory-supported Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo IIs have been nicknamed by their mechanics. The No. 15 Audi Sport Team Car Collection machine has been christened ‘Elenie’ and the No. 22 from Phoenix Racing is named ‘Marta’.

***Reinke said that Audi Sport wants to “set an exclamation mark” by winning the 50th edition of the N24. “If you look at the last decades, I think Audi has left a footprint here at the race,” he said. “In the early years we haven’t been involved that much but we only grew into that segment.”

***Bulldog Racing is running the first Mini entry at the N24 since 2017. Its rivals in the SP3T class are a Seat Leon, a Subaru WRX STI and a Volkswagen Golf 7 TCR. Another expected fan favorite is the Dacia Logan racing in SP3.

***Only one driver from the FIA WTCR field is doing the N24 this year: Mikel Azcona who is driving a Hyundai Elantra N TCR in both competitions.

***An autograph session featuring past winners of the N24 was held at the Nürburgring Boulevard on Friday.

***Haupt Racing Team expects to move into its new headquarters in Meuspath, just outside the Nürburgring, around fall this year. The Mercedes-AMG squad is building a 28,000 sq ft facility to house its race programs and other business ventures. HRT wants to use part of the space to service high-performance road cars and track day vehicles.

***HRT CEO Ulrich Fritz described the construction progress: “There is not a lot to see yet, but there is incredible work in it because we had to level out the ground. One side is nine meters higher, and one is six meters lower, so a lot of movement has been done. We are basically ready to put the building down.”

***IMSA ace Bill Auberlen was one of the drivers taking to the track for the BMW M Race of Legends, which forms part of the support package for the event. Auberlen last competed at the Nürburgring in 2000, driving a BMW V12 LMR in the American Le Mans Series.

***”I’m racing against my heroes, which is so fun. They’re all so fast and then we get to drive the BMW M2 CS Racing. It’s no pressure but a lot of fun,” Auberlen told Sportscar365.

***A 45-minute warmup session is scheduled for 11 a.m. CEST (5 a.m. ET) on Saturday morning, with the race due to start at 4 p.m. (10 a.m. ET).

BMW, Ferrari Hit with Race Day Morning BoP Changes
Front row-qualifying manufacturers receive weight increase in pre-race BoP update…

The BMW and Ferrari entries gearing up for the Nürburgring 24 have each received a 10 kg weight increase in a Balance of Performance update on the morning of the race.

An official technical bulletin issued at 8:36 a.m. local time shows that the BMW M4 GT3s and the Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo 2020 will be heavier for the race than they were for Top Qualifying on Friday evening.

The Octane126 Ferrari squad claimed pole for the 50th edition of the Eifel enduro through Luca Ludwig, while Augusto Farfus qualified second in the No. 99 ROWE BMW.

BMW has also received a reduction in turbo boost pressure at the lower range, while the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 run by TF Sport has been given a turbo boost increase.

Elsewhere, in the SP-X class the KTM X-Bow GT2 has been given a 15 kg weight break, after contesting Top Qualifying at 1300 kg.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R remains at 1300 kg after being brought down to that weight courtesy of a 10 kg reduction before Top Qualifying.

The Ferrari weight increase only concerns the Italian manufacturer’s 2020 evolution model, of which the Octane126 car is the only version in the field. SP9 Pro-Am entrant Racing One is using the 2018 evolution that is unaffected by the weight adjustment.

The Nürburgring 24 is due to get underway at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET).
