So Malaysia next weekend and its another win it or bin it for Quartararo. All risks taken has to be his approach now.

Bagnaia has the advantage that even if Quartararo wins the next two races and they happened to end up equal, he would win it. on the tiebreak.... he has more wins already than Fabio can equal.

As expected Alex Marquez has received a penalty for his more than ambitious actions during the race where he braked really late and clattered hard into the back of Jack Miller on lap 9, ironically at the corner this weekend renamed in Jack's honour. Stewards found Alex to have been “overly aggressive” and thus totally at fault for the crash. A dickhead move no doubt. Alex will go into the Malaysian round next weekend with a long lap penalty to serve at the start of the race (I think within Lap 1-5).

Fortunately Jack was not seriously hurt, although in his own words
“I feel like I’ve been run over by a motorbike that’s for certain but nah I’m alright,”
“My balls have copped a bit of a hiding where they got jammed against the tank and the calf’s a bit sore but it’s all good.”

An update on Navarro.....

Jorge Navarro was taken to hospital in Melbourne with a fractured femur after being struck by Simone Corsi in the Moto2 race at PI.

Navarro had a moment and lost the bike exiting Miller Corner, leaving Simone Corsi no chance to avoid him.

Corsi hit Navarro’s torso as the Spaniard fell to the track, with Corsi also taken down in the collision.

It’s been confirmed that he also suffered an injury, to his right little finger, and has subsequently been declared unfit.

MotoGP riders have called for improvements to fencing at the Phillip Island circuit to protect them from the possibility of dangerous 'wildlife strikes.'

Moto2 qualifying came to a slightly early end due to the presence of two geese on the track causing a red flag which may well have cost Lopez pole as he was on a final flyer
That was the second red flag triggered by the local Cape Barren Geese this weekend, and came after Aleix Espargaro missed a wallaby which ran across the track by barely a metre as he sped towards Hayshed corner during Friday practice

Image
I know it sounds silly but I have seen some fairly extensive damage to cars hitting the local wildlife. I can tell you from experience the geese will happily sit on the apex to a corner seemingly oblivious to cars inches away.

20 or more years ago a rider hit a seagull on the main straight. The seagull hit the riders arm and broke it badly.... he thought he had physically lost his arm because his arm in the airstream whipped round behind his back. He fully recovered and didnt 'lose his arm' Cant recall his name but the story is true.

Edit It was Marty Craggil in 1990. Simon Crafar mentioned the incident in his commentary. I just found this.
MotoGP commentator Simon Crafar referenced an incident in the 1990s when a rider was hit by a bird and suffered serious injuries."I know there'll be a lot of people going 'What? It's only a couple of birds. They're not going to do much damage' – they're quite big birds," said Crafar.

"I don't know if you remember, back in the '90s – Marty Craggill – on the main straight, a seagull took off, hit him in the left bicep, and the weight of that bird at that speed, he said he felt the impact, it was so big that he looked over, still on the bike, and his left arm had gone.
Craggil definitely did not lose his arm as Crafar says.... Marty still rides at Historic events.
and still has two arms

Iannone also hit a bird at PI a few years ago
Iannone, who had made a fine start to take the lead, was forced to duck when the gull smashed into his bike causing a major dent in a faring.
He then rose out of his seat as he strived to control his machine at full throttle on a straight stretch of track.
Riders following Iannone drove through a stream of feathers and the prone gull.
In fact here is the video.

I also found this from a local race at PI when a bird takes two riders down.

That's probably the last we saw of Jorge Navarro in GP paddock for a while as he goes to Supersport replacing SBK-bound Dominique Aegerter at Ten Kate Yamaha next season.

Jorge is a bit pissed at the way things unfolded after his crash the other day. I must admit at the time I thought it was a bit dodgy....
He was sat there about 2 or 3 metres from the edge of the track with Marshals, and Simone Corsi (the rider who ran into Jorge) .... Jorge with a broken thigh as they waited for a stretcher to take him away. He sat there for a few laps whilst bikes raced hard despite the yellow flags. (Picture below shows the situation)

Image

Jorge mentioned this in an update. (He wasnt the only one to raise the issue)
Without any doubts this was the scariest moment of my racing career and my life.

“To be super close at the track with the bikes passing by and seeing my leg broken in two.

“This shouldn’t ever happen, to anyone.

“Thank you to Simone and the Marshal who stayed by my side.

“A big thanks also to all of the Medical staff at the circuit and The Alfred Hospital who took really good care of me.

“Thank you for all of your kind messages, they mean a lot to me.

“The surgery went well and I am recovering.”
Others to mention it included former MotoGP rider Loris Baz who was among those to weigh in on the incident, noting the irony that transiting a yellow flag zone in practice or qualifying constitutes an automatic loss of lap time, yet riders continued to race through a yellow flag zone while Navarro was injured.

“Lap canceled for marshals [sic] safety if you ride fast with a yellow flag… and then this,” he wrote on Twitter.

Fair point really. No official comment from the organisers or Dorna that I am aware of.

It took two racing laps to carry Navarro on a stretcher. However it's all down to the fixed start of MotoGP race. Any red flags for non-weather situation is extremely unlikely let alone for a conscious rider sitting on the grass. Ayumu Sasaki was also carried on a stretcher at Misano IIRC and there was not even a remote chance of a red flag for injured rider.

Bagnaia crashed with a minute left of qualy and ended up out of the top 10 and will have to go through Q1.
Marquez also will be doing the Q1 thing as with Miller.

Skies are getting dark and a thunderstorm is forecast to start during Moto3 qualy.

Morbidelli was blatantly blocking people, including Fabio MM and Bagnaia with one move.

Bags and MM get through Q1 to Q2..... MM was destined to start 21st until the very last lap , Miller fell off running 2nd going through, and Marc pulled out a blinder after a dreadful day to go 2nd. To rub salt into Millers wounds Binder then pushed him down to 4th.

So Q2 getting ready.... Fabio dropped it in P4 and is currently sitting with his left hand and forearm in a bag of ice ....which turned towincing in pain as he tried to do his helmet up. Not the best way to go into Q2 with so much at stake.

At least the rain looks like it will stay away for the next 15 minutes

Jorge Martin Pole at a canter and with a lap record

Bags was on the verge of the first ever 57 sec lap as Q2 was running its course, but threw it down the road and will start 8th. Aleix Espargara then threw it down the road as well, and Fabs tried his best to do the same but stayed on.... and managed his worst qualy of the season and will start 12th.

Jorge Martin was the one to do the first 57 with a 1: 57.790, half a second inside the record for Pole, from Bastianini with a 58.246, nearly half a second of Martin's brilliant lap, and MM93 made up the front row.

In Moto 2 Championship leader Ogura got his 3rd pole of the year . His 2:06.405 saw him beat Tony Arbolino by 0.083s. Aron Canet rounds out the front row of the grid in P3, with title-chasing Augusto Fernandez settling for P6.
