Bottom post of the previous page:

Some great drives there.... Courtney pulled another Adelaide stunner, and also Davison in the Red 23 holding off Lowndes at the end to finish 8th. Solid race from Reynolds in 4th.

Basically just over 0.3 separating the top 10 cars.

The tightness of the times has seen a few big names not make it into the shootout. ie Courtney, Coulthard, Davison, Lowndes, Kelly, Holdsworth.....

1.1 seconds covers the field.

Another huge hit at Turn 8 this time the Improved Tourers when a Mazda lost the rear on arrival at T8, smacked into the wall and careered across the track wiping out another car as it did so. No injuries to drivers, just two very sad looking cars.

Wow Its all happening here, Whincup was leading and has had a transaxle failure... made his way to the garage and they are working on it but his race is effectively done.

Immediately before that Scotty Mac had a puncture and had to limp half a lap. No damage but he is down in 22nd now. SVG comfortable in the lead.

SVG won. Reynolds and Tander were 2 and 3. Courtney and Pye were both in the top 10 so WAU has improved in the off season, at least as far as Adelaide goes. Scotty McLaughlin came home 10th.

A good season opener. The Red Bulls are rocket ships, but Reynolds in the Erebus Penrite Commodore surprised himself with his pace and after coming out of the pits after the last stops right in front of Van Giz he could have won the day..... had he not left the door so far open at T9 a bus could have passed him.. SVG took the offer and Reynolds was on his bumper until the flag.

Lots of kerb abuse warnings and penalties which caused some grief.... notably Winterbottom threw a podium away by copping a DTP for repeated abuse. It seems there is a bit of a variable causing dodgy readings. The kerb abuse trigger is an elecronic line in the turn is set off by the transponder when it crosses. The transponder is a timing devise primarily but also used for track limits type things, The teams claim that the position of the transponder and its physical limitations apparently allow for erratic readings when the car is on two wheels through the kerbs. When Winterbottom was given his final warning the team say he was particularly careful and this could be seen on video footage..... but the transponder still triggered an abuse. If it is a problem for the cars it needs to be addressed because a DTP penalty these days is weekend ruined.

I heard it mentioned "WalkAndUnite" are actually leading the Team Championship. Been a long time since that team or its alter egos have been in that position. Mind you they almost blew it when the two teamates got clumsy and bashed doors in a Force India like on track skirmish in the second half of the race.

V8 qualifying for the (now championship) V8 AGP support races threw out some surprises that highlighted the format of a 10 minute qualifying session for each race. 2 qualifying sessions held yesterday with 2 today have shown many problems with the format, but the main two protagonists of 2017 shone through to the top, with Scoty Mac and JW taking one pole each today with yesterday netting the same results.

The problem with the 10 minute format is with a 2 minute lap on what is quite a long circuit, compounded by the V8 pit ane taking a massive 50 seconds to drive through without any stop, means that realistically teams in the furthest end from the track could not get in two runs. The session would need to be 11 minutes long. Again with the soft rubber used for this weekend, the tyres lose a second as soon as they have done one flyer so the pressure is on. What became the choice of most was whether to head out on old rubber to do a warm up lap for the brakes, come in bolt on new rubber and go out for a time, or whether to leave the quick time for the very end.

In effect the one lap format on a crowded track means someone will get their day ruined by traffic or a slight mistake. Yesterday Lowndes got held up dreadfully on his flyer, notably by an unknowing Golding on his slow down lap (for which he got a 5 second time penalty) and ended up 26th and last for one of the races. Today Championship Leader Van Giz had a overshoot running off track on his one lap and starts race 4 from rear of grid. Traffic spoilt his fun in qualy 3, meaning he will start race 3 17th. Being all very short races their weekends are pretty well set as being low points weekend ahead.

Anyway below is the full qualy times for all 4 races. (Note that the description of race 3, 4,5,6 relate to the race in the season with races 1&2 already done at Clipsal.... ie race 3 listed is race 1 for the weekend).

Alonso almost tested a V8 Supercar.

As an aside Zak Brown, McLaren principal and also part owner of Walkinshaw Andretti United V8 team, and who also owns the United Motorsport Sports Car team that ran Fernando at Daytona 24 hours earlier this year also has a V8 Supercar (2011 Bathurst winner Commodore,) in his car collection. He had taken it with his Sports Car Team to Aragon in Spain when they did pre season testing with Alonso. Brown had a run in the Commodore. Filipe Albuquerque also did some laps in it. After Fernando had completed his Sports Car testing programme at the end of the day he was all set and looking forward to going out and do some laps in the Commodore.

Only problem was in true form for McLaren management, Fernando was all set to go when they realised they had zero fuel to use so the run was aborted!
