BTCC Race Winner Tom Oliphant inks a 2 year TCR Australia deal

British Touring Car Championship 2 time race winner and former BMW factory driver Tom Oliphant will contest both the 2023 and 2024 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series seasons. He will be steering ASM’s Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Oliphant, 32, now a resident of Wollongong, walked away from the BTCC and moved to Australia last year in order to support his Australian fiancée Genevieve in her career down under.

Tom.spent four years in the BTCC, making his début in a Mercedes-Benz in 2018 before moving to West Surrey Racing in a BMW for 2019, where he spent three seasons.

Finishing twice on the podium in his first year with Team BMW, Oliphant won his first race in 2020 on his way to sixth overall in the championship – his best overall classification. He made a one-off return to the BTCC at Thruxton when he stood in for Will Powell at Team HARD, but otherwise did not race.

Oliphant will be the first international to compete full-time in the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series.

Round 1 headlines AWC Race Tasmania at Symmons Plains on February 24-26

A record number of entries has been locked in for the 2023 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.

Image

The entry list for the Easter 'production' car endurance event features 66 cars after 85 entries were submitted to organisers.

As it stands, that figure is two more than the current record of 64, which was achieved at the 2017 event. :thumbsup

This year’s grid consists of 14 different brands and more than 25 models across nine classes.

85 entries is pretty amazing. There's also going to be three extra races (40 minutes each) for those not in the main event also featuring some GT4 cars (which are getting added to the main production car championship this year and will probably be replacing the top class cars in the 6 Hour next year).

S5000 Calendar
A SEVEN-ROUND schedule featuring key events across the SpeedSeries and Supercars calendar will highlight the 2023 S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship season.

The 61st Motorsport Australia Gold Star campaign will commence at Symmons Plains Raceway at the annual Race Tasmania event in late February.

Back-to-back Victorian rounds follow, including the categories debut at Winton Motor Raceway for the newly-announced June 9-11 long weekend SpeedSeries round.

The Championship returns to Sydney Motorsport Park in July at the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight event with the Repco Supercars Championship.

For the first time since 2008, South Australia will host two Australian Drivers’ Championship rounds, commencing with Round 5 of the 2023 season to be held at The Bend’s OTR SuperSprint in August.

While S5000 has raced at The Bend previously – the circuit hosted the second ever non-championship race event for the category in 2019 – the circuit just outside Adelaide has never hosted a Gold Star round.

The championship will then conclude with a two-round Tasman Series, including a return to the VALO Adelaide 500 across the November 23-26 weekend.

The final two rounds will double as the Tasman Series, while all seven will contribute to the Australian Drivers’ Championship and Motorsport Australia Gold Star award points.

The more venues the better..... the fact the new owner is a local identity and knows the system, has friends in high places can only enhance the chances of activity resuming. BAC really made a mess of the way they went about it under their ownership, and upset many of the people of influence in the area so this is the best outcome possible.... basically it is now owned by one of the local influencers.

If anyone is interested the Bathurst 6 hour (for "Production" cars) is on this weekend. (starts 11:45 am local time so not the most social time in the UK and Europe (we are +9hrs on the UK, +8 on Europe atm).
The FT World Challenge (GT3 cars) is on before at 9:20am local)

Live stream for all weekend for International viewers. http://www.speedseries.com.au/TV

Entry list (c 60 cars). https://bathurst6hour.com.au/event-info/entry-list/

Spotter guides timetable and other stuff on the event info link on the website https://bathurst6hour.com.au/

Will Davison Pole for BMW.

We have had qualifying today and it was one of the V8 Supercar ring ins that took the honours
Will Davison is not only good at qualifying Supercars, but he is also handy in Production Cars with pole position today (Saturday) for Sunday’s Mt Panorama race.

Davison got the Beric Lynton/Tim Leahey Class X BMW M3 around the mount in 2:24:4612s to be half a second faster than Drew Russell in the M3 he shares with brother Aaron and father Wayne.

Third fastest was Davison’s DJR Supercar teammate Anton De Pasquale in the Anthony Soole/Adam Burgess BMW M4, a similar distance away.

Class X BMWs will fill out the first three rows with Tom Randle fourth in the M2 Competition of brothers Ben and Michael Kavich ahead of Jayden Ojeda/Simon Hodges and Michael Auld/Garth Walden/Tyler Everingham.

Just to show the entry size, the full qualifying results

No mention anywhere I could find giving the reason for Andrew McMaster's DSQ from qualy at this stage.
IIRC he is a previous winner of the event some years ago. No mention of him being DSQ'd from the event, just a note against qualy so I suspect it might have been a technical breach that can be rectified and he will start tomorrow rear of grid.

A bit of a "Code Brown" moment for one of the Hyundais in the Excel Support race at the 6 hour. :haha:

The 6 Hour is a quarter way through (ish) and the Jayden Ojeda and Will Davison cars are leading. Ambrose is the first car in the lower classes though some of the Mustangs are out of sync with each other.

Couple of SC's so far but still a long way to go...... oops we might have another as I type for someone in a Toyota 86 off at Devils Elbow and not likely to move on its own having bashed the fence on both sides.

Gad to see Tony Quinn back in action again after his huge Carrera Cup crash last year, running with his Grandson Ryder. He was back on the top step yesterday in one of the support categories so got his hands full this weekend. He was just interviewed and he says the body is holding up. Would have been good to see Klark (Ryders Father /Tony's son) Quinn on track as well to get 3 generations of Quinns racing together. He is there but not driving.

Ryder Quinn leading in the Local Legends Mustang at the moment, but not half way yet so early days. Not sure where they stand on pit stop taken. The Sherrin car is looking strong and has taken 3 of its compulsory stops already.

SC's seem to be breeding SC's atm.

Half distance now and the Sherrin car is now leading..... however the Davison .Lynton car and the Randle car are both line astern so its not over by a long way. All three have done most of theirCompulsory stops, and have just one to take, so really is tight. Second half it comes down to preserving tyres and strategy and being well placed and in good nick for the final sprint to the finish

RX8 driver went off track, kept his foot in it and speared into the wall when he probably could have kept going otherwise.

He just seemed to be 20kph too fast coming into the corner, almost like a sticky throttle, and then as said kept his foot in. Maybe it was a sticking throttle kept the revs up and not a heavy right foot. Whatever, the result was a big impact, broadside on across to the other side of the track from where he went wide and off.

Anyway going green again.....
