Silly ways to lose a race...
The silliest way I have ever seen anyone lose a race is Bjorn Wirdheim slowing to celebrate his "win" at the 2003 Monaco F3000 race. He slowed too early and too much and didn't realise he hadn't actually gone past the chequered flag, so was beaten by Kiesa just metres from the end of the race.

Did Mansell kill his engine in Montreal '91 or did it actually break down?

Yep, they fired it back up as soon as they got it back in the garage. Mansell had inadvertently hit the ignition switch while waving to the crowd on the last lap.

Yeah it is true. If you get a chance, watch the 1991 FIA F1 review. Sir Frank Williams is interviewed after the race in the Canadian pits. He says "As always happens we brought it back and it fired up first time with all the gears!"

Jack Brabham lost two races in 1970 in strange circumstances:
At Monaco, he crashed out at the last corner, and let Jochen Rindt through to win.
At Brands Hatch, he ran out of fuel on the last lap, with Rindt again the beneficiary. One of Brabham's mechanics was a certain Ron Dennis...
Then there was Prost losing the '85 San Marino GP due to his car being a couple of kilos underweight..

Oh man, what a mistake!
I've always thought Sete Gibernau was silly to leave a big open gap for Valentino Rossi to dive into, going into the final turn at Jerez in 2005.

This is even worse: final two laps behind the safetycar anf spinning just 4 corners before the end while being in the lead.

That is unreal. Clearly he was trying to warm his tyres for what he thought was a restart rather than the finish of the race
