Minor incident???? That was a hell of a shunt. Ghiotto and Aitken risked their ass badly.

Race cancelled and schumi increases his lead over ilott after a brave first lap where he recovered 4 positions

'modular density foam', an almost meaningless term that translates as polystyrene or polypropolene. Just means medium density as opposed to high.

Techpro barriers may stop cars but I feel like anytime someone goes into them just a little harder the car just goes under at least one layer. Now I get this isn't a new thing but I can't recall it happening that often with tyre barriers. There you mostly submarine the car on a frontal impact.

Yeah, but I guess bottom line is I would rather get slapped in the face with polystyrene than a pile of old tyres. Maybe it is to do with lessening the G Force of the stop by making it more gradual deceleration. Tyre walls you tend to stop fairly quickly and even bounce back a bit.

It seems the crash was caused by a puncture on aitken car. Pirelli is investigating and will try to understand if it’s an issue in the new 18inch wheel design

One thing I noticed but did not mention re the F2 crash was the length of time marshalls took to get to the scene. Drivers had already got out of the cars and clambered through the debris before any marshalls even showed up.... and then the fire was well and truly underway before any fire marshalls arrived with an extinguisher. Seemed pretty average to me, and I dread to think what might have happened to Ghiotto had he been trapped or impeded from getting clear of his car (unaided).

I notice Masi had something to say about it today.... blaming the delays on no local marshall's post within easy access to the corner, and it was a long way for the fire marshall to run with a fire extinguisher. Sorry but that doesnt wash with me, and is a shocking excuse. We are not talking the Nordschleife here where you have over a hundred corners over many kilometres.... we are talking about a pissy little street circuit of not many corners, and if. a marshalls post is not close enough then that is purely down to bad planning.
