First on-track views of IndyCar aeroscreen

IndyCar has released the first images from today’s test of its new aeroscreen at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing and Will Power of Team Penske are both testing the cockpit protection device that will be implemented on all cars for the 2020 NTT IndyCar Series season. Dixon previously tested an aeroscreen prototype on a simulator July 2 at the Dallara Research Center in Speedway, Indiana.

Developed in collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the system encompassing the cockpit is comprised of a ballistic aeroscreen anchored by titanium framework.

Although no specific timeframe has been set for the amount of laps each driver will turn with the aeroscreen installed at Indy today, Dixon and Power are expected to conduct individual runs to test visibility through the PPG-supplied material, and to provide feedback on any buffeting, chassis handling, cockpit temperatures, helmet lift, and a variety of other items on the series’ checklist.

It's not beautiful but just like the Halo, I don't mind it. It'll be better with the next-gen chassis which will be built to incorporate the screen to begin with.

I think the halo is more attractive weirdly. It's too square and wide compare to what happens with the shape of the engine cover.

Daly out of contention for the SPAM-car

Power and Dixon said that the screen is ready to race with now. Which is good news.

I agree.

From the front it's horrendous. It's like one of those early 1970s roll cages on a sprinter. Just hideous.

The original actually looked somewhat cool.

I agree. I have got used to the halo now and see it as part of the car... something I never thought I would.
I believe the width / bulk of the Indy aeroscreen is to do with ensuring vision clarity and lack of distortion of vision. Hence why it lacks a tapered look finishing to a point.
Power liked it a lot and said he would now feel naked without it. Dixon commented on the lack of buffeting from wind and that hee could now hear the engine.

Of course it looks out of place since it's basically just bolted onto the car. The next-gen chassi will be built with the screen in mind.

I wonder how many drivers will get feeling of paranoia this year if they can hear the engine...

Someone modded the aeroscreen on to the road course chassis. Two things that strike me is:

- The screen doesn't stick out as much when paired with the larger wings
- The screen looks way better if it's a part of the livery. Case in point, Will Power's car compared to Dixon's.

I see Red Bull (who developed the aeroscreen) have confirmed it is indeed stronger than the F1 Halo, and are able to take a greater force of impact. The F1 Halo is tested with a load of 112 kilonewtons on the car, and can take a reported maximum load of 125kN in total, but the aeroscreen is capable of withstanding 25kN more than that.

"We've adopted it [the halo, in F1], however, the forces which this device [the aeroscreen] or the hoop will take is 150kN," said Red Bull Advanced Technologies

All well and good, but the issue isn't how much the devices can take - it's how much the brain can take when it's smashed against the skull in deceleration.

Halo wouldn't have saved Jules because of the deceleration forces.

Pretty sure it was on F1Technical - the video was analysed to and demonstrated the height that the tractor was lifted, the speed of the vehicle/impact etc.

The FIA confirmed the halo wouldn’t have positively changed the outcomes of a few incidents they studied, Jules’ accident being one of those.
