New WEC season starts off very well.....
SMP Racing withdraws from 2019/2020 WEC season

Image

SMP Racing has withdrawn its pair of AER-powered BR1 LMP1 cars from the 2019/20 FIA WEC season.

In a surprise statement issued on Monday, the Russian team, which finished third overall in this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, said that it had achieved the best results possible in “the given circumstances” racing as part of the privateer LMP1 pack, and will therefore bow out.

“For us, it was a difficult season,” Boris Rotenberg, the team’s founder, said. “We worked a lot on our BR1 prototype. As a result, we were able to show and prove to everyone that the Russian team, Russian drivers and the Russian car are capable of achieving the highest results in the most difficult world championships, and in such a prestigious race as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“This is a well-deserved success of everyone who participated in this ambitious project – drivers, SMP Racing and ART GP, BR Engineering and Dallara. Our goal has always been only a victory, and we believe that we achieved this victory with the highest possible result in the given circumstances.

“After the final race at Le Mans, we decided that SMP Racing will leave the FIA WEC. Our team will not race in the 2019-2020 season.”

This news reduces the LMP1 field to six full-season cars for next season. As it stands a pair of Toyota Gazoo Racing TS050 HYBRIDs, Rebellion Racing R-13s and Team LNT Ginetta G60-LT-P1s remain.

Rebellion is believed to have committed resources for one car whilst it seeks commercial partners to enable its second car to run for the full season.

Team LNT, meanwhile, will be on track at Paul Ricard this week testing as it works towards finalizing details for its full-season entry.

ByKolles and DragonSpeed, both of which competed in the ‘Super Season’ in LMP1, don’t feature on the entry for the 2019/20 season either. However ByKolles has stated it will attempt to compete in the upcoming campaign with its ENSO CLM as a race-by-race entry. The Austrian outfit has shifted its focus to developing a new car for the Hypercar ruleset which will form the top class in the WEC from the 2020/21 season onwards.

Another year where you have to fight for that final third spot?

Heard stories about personnel leaving their teams because of lack of motivation.

2018-2019 season in short:
1. Toyota
2. Toyota
3. [first non hybrid]

The only exception was Silverstone, where the Toyota's were DQ-ed. In that race after 45 min. the leading Toyota had lapped all non-hybrid LMP1's.

Team LNT confirms WEC Prologue participation

Image

Team LNT has confirmed that both its full-season FIA WEC Ginetta G60-LT-P1s will take part in the upcoming pre-season Prologue test in Barcelona.

The team has been out testing this week in Paul Ricard, and is eager to debut its two AER-powered LMP1s in public. At Barcelona they will run with AER’s upgraded P60C turbo six-cylinder engines, the same specification with which SMP Racing (which has withdrawn its WEC entries for the 2020/21 season) set blistering times in qualifying and enjoyed a trouble-free run to an overall podium at Le Mans last month.

At Ricard, Team LNT was one of multiple WEC teams taking part in the three days of track action. Toyota took a TS050 HYBRID to France, Cetilar Racing ran its Dallara and AF Corse brought with it multiple Ferrari 488 GTEs.

During the test, Team LNT completed 870 miles of fault-free running adding to its 2019 test program which has totaled nearly 2,000 miles. The car that ran in France is currently undergoing a rebuild ahead of its trip to Spain.

“The car ran fast and totally reliably for all three days in very hot conditions at Paul Ricard. It was a hugely valuable test that sets us up for the Prologue later this month and the season to follow,” said Team LNT’s Lawrence Tomlinson.

Team LNT plan to provide further details of their 2019/20 FIA WEC program during the Prologue.

Meanwhile, French European Le Mans Series team GRAFF has stated its intention to join the FIA WEC for the 2020/21 season. The outfit will take part in the Asian Le Mans Series over the winter to get some experience in international racing ahead of its planned global campaign.

Goodyear Eyeing Hypercar as Part of “Long Term” WEC Plan

Goodyear eyeing long-term WEC involvement, including GTE and hypercar expansion…

Goodyear is planning to be in sports car racing “for the long term” following its commitment to provide tires in the FIA World Endurance Championship next season.

The U.S. company’s motorsport director Ben Crawley told Sportscar365 that expansion beyond its initial LMP2 commitment is planned, while he also described the upcoming hypercar regulations as “very much of interest”.

Goodyear announced its return to top-level sports car racing after a 13-year hiatus last month and is currently preparing for its first WEC race at Silverstone in September.

Its full supply range next season is not yet known, with High Class Racing currently shown as the only Goodyear team on the entry list for the pre-season Prologue test.

This came out after the provisional full-season entry list, which had the two Jota-run Oreca 07 Gibsons from Jota Sport and Jackie Chan DC Racing named as Goodyear entrants, but their tires are no longer specified.

Crawley explained that Goodyear, which is the parent company of former WEC supplier Dunlop, wants to increase its presence within the championship in the next few years.

This naturally includes the hypercar regulations, which will replace LMP1 starting in 2020-21, and will carry a single tire supplier as per the technical rulebook published last year.

“Within WEC, we don’t just want to stay in LMP2,” said Crawley. “Part of having a stronger, broader presence for Goodyear and activating it more, is obviously the new hypercar category, which is of interest.

“We’ll be actively discussing and evaluating that, and also the GTE categories. We absolutely want to expand the presence within WEC.

“Overall, we see this as one pillar of how we bring Goodyear back into racing, for the long term.

“Aside from activating Goodyear in motorsport, one of the other key drivers is creating strong links with OEMs that we can then leverage from a wider business point of view.

“If the confirmed and rumored OEMs come to fruition within the category, then it will very much be of interest in terms of providing that platform.”

Goodyear’s European vice president Mike Rytokoski added that the company is aiming to increase its off-track brand activation surrounding the WEC program.

He explained that Goodyear’s global marketability has made it a more viable brand to present on the global stage, compared to Dunlop.

“We’re looking to revitalize the brand in Europe, as well as our flagship brand globally, so it was a logical decision for us to bring Goodyear back to motorsports and more,” Rytokoski told Sportscar365.

“One of the other reasons why we like the idea of bringing the Goodyear brand back instead of Dunlop is that we don’t hold Dunlop in every single country of the world.

“In the WEC, there are a couple of races in Asia where we don’t actually have the rights for the Dunlop brand.

“Now that we have Goodyear in WEC, it gives us a lot more [freedom] to do more marketing activities and activation, and we are working on those plans as we go forward.”

Goodyear’s arrival in the WEC coincides with the launch of the new ultra-high-performance Eagle F1 SuperSport road tire that borrows technology from the race tire development process.

The WEC tires are being developed at Goodyear’s manufacturing plants in Germany and Luxembourg.

“Our innovation centers that we have in Europe are all part of one research and development group, so there are continuously shared learnings,” said Crawley.

“Also, where the race tires are going to be manufactured is where we manufacturer some of our ultra-high-performance road tires. Everything from the design and development to final design and production, are very closely aligned synergies.

“We’re very confident that we can develop race-winning tires and the teams that we’ll be working with at the start will be very competitive.

“The focus of competition in WEC is trying to get outright performance, in terms of delivering for professional drivers continually better tires that go faster, and also making sure that we can suit some of the silver drivers that need a bit more feel and driveability.

“It’s a balancing act, always. But the absolute focus is that cars on Goodyear tires will be winning from race one.”

Dunlop will continue to supply tires to teams in the ELMS this year, but no decision has been made on whether Goodyear will assimilate the brand’s activities in 2020.

“It’s too early to say whether cars will be racing on Dunlop at Le Mans in 2020 because, clearly, other series feed into part of the ultimate grid spaces,” said Crawley.

“We’ll make decisions on those other series as and when the timings are right to do that.”

Crawley added that Goodyear is aiming to have its tires winning in the WEC “from race one.”

Unfortunately yes. Once the manufacturers start to lose interest, a series is on its way out.
I guess the relevance of LMP1 technology is not there for major manufacturers anymore. The Hypercar category should bring some manufacturers back since they are simply racing versions of existing cars. Think of the marketing that can be done with that!

Team LNT Announce Ginetta LMP1 Crews For Silverstone WEC Opener

Team LNT have announced their six-driver squad for the two-car Ginetta LMP1 effort at the 2019 Four Hours of Silverstone, the opening round of the 2019/20 FIA World Endurance Championship on 1 September, this the Ginetta’s racing debut in AER-powered form.

Image

Team LNT’s #5 Ginetta G60-LT-P1 will field three drivers with recent LMP1 history:

Ben Hanley, 2018/19 WEC LMP1 driver, 2019 Indy 500 driver, LMP2 race winner in European Le Mans Series;

Egor Orudzhev, 2018/19 WEC LMP1 driver, ELMS LMP2 race winner, the only driver to out-qualify a Toyota LMP1 driver in a non-hybrid LMP1. Tested with Team LNT at the WEC Prologue in Barcelona;

Charlie Robertson, Ginetta Factory Driver, 2015 ELMS LMP3 Champion with Ginetta, 2018 Le Mans 24Hours in Ginetta LMP1 – Test and Development on the Ginetta LMP1 from the beginning of the programme.

The team’s #6 Ginetta G60-LT-P1 will field the experienced trio of:

Chris Dyson, two-time American Le Mans Series Champion and three times Le Mans 24 Hours starter. Tested the Ginetta at Paul Ricard last month;

Guy Smith, 2003 Le Mans 24 Hours winner, 2011 American Le Mans Series Champion (with Chris Dyson), Bentley Factory Driver. Tested the Ginetta at Paul Ricard last month and again at the WEC Prologue;

Mike Simpson, Ginetta factory driver, multiple wins in GT and LMP with Ginetta, 2018 Le Mans 24 Hours starter with Ginetta LMP1. Test and Development on the Ginetta LMP1 from the beginning of the programme.

Lawrence Tomlinson, Chairman of Ginetta Cars and Team Principal of Team LNT said:

“We’re really excited to show what the Ginetta can do this season.

“The mix of experience, consistency and raw speed that we are announcing for Silverstone has a great chance of helping us to show what the car is capable in a field of really quick cars.

Charlie Robertson:

“I’m absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity to race the Ginetta LMP1 again.

“I was very proud to be part of the winning crew (with Sir Chris Hoy) the last time Ginetta debuted an LMP car at Silverstone – We’ll be pushing hard to get as close as possible to matching that result.

“It’s amazing to have climbed every single step of the Ginetta ladder from Juniors back in 2011 to LMP1 now – What a ride, and what a credit to the Ginetta brand.”

Mike Simpson:

“It’s always an enormous honour to represent Ginetta, but to be asked to do so at this level is fantastic. The car is simply amazing, and the testing and development we have done with the AER-powered cars have proved that the car is capable of being in real contention.

“I’m looking forward to racing alongside Guy, who I have known for many years, and to seeing a lot more of Chris (Dyson) who I enjoyed working alongside in testing.

Guy Smith:

“It was great to get behind the wheel of an LMP1 car again, the game has moved on very significantly in a very short time. The Ginetta is a very impressive car, the power from the AER and the pace we saw in testing really lit the fire underneath me to do this again.

Chris Dyson:

“I’ve been looking for the right programme to take the step back up to LMP1 for a little while and when the Ginetta AER programme was suggested to me it seemed to tick just about every box possible.

“I tried the car out at Paul Ricard last month and was blown away by the potential of this package.

“I’m looking forward to working with a new team in a new car and in a World Championship setting – we’ll celebrate every single success and step forward we make together and I know everybody involved will be working as hard as they can to make that something we do very often through the season!”

Egor Orudzhev: “Whilst I know LMP1, and the AER engine well, the Ginetta was an unknown quantity to me at the Prologue and I have to say it was a very pleasant surprise. The speed came easily and quickly and it is already clear that the package has a massive amount of potential and with a much, much better hand dealt this season by the rulemakers it will be very interesting to see just how close we can get to the Toyotas."

Ben Hanley:

“Last season was a tough introduction to LMP1 for me with a car that wasn’t as reliable as I hoped.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what the Ginetta AER has to offer, all indications are that there’s a very strong base to work from but that the drivers have plenty to bring to the effort of the whole team in unlocking the potential of the package."

“If we can do that together then this could be a very interesting adventure!”

Menezes, Senna combine to put Rebellion on pole in China

Rebellion Racing has become the first team to set pole with a non-hybrid car for an FIA World Endurance Championship race since Audi Sport did so back in the championship’s inaugural race at Sebring in 2012 with an R18 TDI.

American Gustavo Menezes and Brazil’s Bruno Senna combined to average a 1m45.892s at the Shanghai International Circuit with two single laps far quicker than anything set in practice by an LMP1 car. With his performance, Menezes has also become the FIA WEC’s first ever American LMP1 pole winner.

“Very cool to be on overall pole here,” Menezes told RACER. “We know we have a hard four hours ahead of us. If the Ginettas get by they will be very tough to pass. And whatever we’ve seen today, the Toyotas are going to be very strong over a race distance. But this is what we came here to do.

“The success handicap is going to swing in both directions during the season. We have to use it to our advantage wherever and whenever we can. You can’t do better than pole.”

“It was good!” exclaimed Senna. “The car feels so nice in qualifying with new tires and low fuel. The challenge is big tomorrow with the tire degradation, it will be very tricky. Here Gustavo inspired me to do a big lap. The fact that we managed to be in front of the Toyotas and Ginettas is really cool.”

Not only did Toyota Gazoo Racing’s pair of TS050 HYBRIDs miss out on pole, but they also missed out on a front row grid spot too. Behind the Gibson-powered Rebellion R-13s, the two Team LNT G60-LT-P1 AERs will start from second and third.

The No. 6, driven by Mike Simpson and Charlie Robertson, was the quicker of the two, Simpson setting a late 1m47.427s to vault the car to second with an average of 1m47.092s. His lap came after a brief spin — a great recovery from the Englishman.

The sister No. 5 Ginetta will start from third, ahead of the two Toyotas that slotted in fourth and fifth, 1.3 and 2.2 seconds off pole (the No. 7 ahead of the No. 8). At this point the new success handicap system appears to be achieving the stated goals of the FIA and ACO in pegging back the Toyotas in single-lap pace at least. Whether that form will carry over to the race tomorrow remains to be seen.

In LMP2, it was Silverstone winner Cool Racing that emerged as the fastest team. Its Michelin-shod ORECA, driven by Nicolas Lapierre and Antonin Borga, set a 1m48.649s average, scoring the team its first ever WEC pole.

“It’s a great result for the whole team — we’ve struggled the last few races in qualifying, so to get our first pole in the WEC is a great result for the team. We even tried to minimize the laps we spent on the tires during the session because this circuit is so hard on tires,” Lapierre said after the session.

A tenth off pole in second was the No. 37 Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECA, the fastest Goodyear runner, ahead of the No. 22 United Autosports ORECA that will start on the second row in third.

Racing Team Nederland’s ORECA, which won last time out at Fuji, will start from the back in the class because Frits van Eerd failed to set a time after the car suffered a puncture.

In the GTE classes, Porsche stole the headlines.

GTE Pro saw the first pole of the season for the No. 92 duo of Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen, and the first class pole for Porsche in Shanghai. The duo combined for a 1m59.579s after Christensen reeled off a 1m59.708s and Estre went on to set the best time of the session, a 1m50.024s.

“We didn’t know what to expect because it’s a hard track on tires,” Estre said. “It’s nice to get this pole, and one point. Our last pole was Sebring last season, which wasn’t a great race for us — let’s hope for better here!”

Behind, Aston Martin Racing came achingly close, and will therefore be disappointed to come away without pole position after its two Vantage AMR’s sat 1-2 atop the class times after the first set of times.

Eventually the No. 95 of Danish duo Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen took second, after managing a 1m59.597s, which was just 0.018s off pole. The No. 97 sister car will start from third. It may not have bagged pole, but AMR will be nevertheless confident that it can repeat its performance from last season, where the No. 95 scored the first ever win for the current spec Vantage.

Outside the top three the two AF Corse Ferraris, the No. 51 leading the No. 71 slotted in fourth and fifth, with the No. 91 Porsche bookending the class times in sixth.

Am saw a strong performance from Team Project 1’s Matteo Cairoli and Egidio Perfetti, who pit Team Project 1’s No. 56 Porsche 911 RSR on class pole. Cairoli lapped first, and set a 2m00.031s before Perfetti toured the circuit in 2m01.617s. In the end, their combined time was a 2m00.824s, seven tenths clear of the No. 98 Aston Martin which claimed second after Paul Dalla Lana and Ross Gunn’s efforts.

The No. 77 Dempsey Proton Porsche will start third in Am, after Christian Reid and Matt Campbell made it two Porsches in the top three.

RESULTS

Sunday is race day and it starts at 12:00 p.m. local time.
