Toyota Wins 24H Le Mans; Alonso Crowned World Champion

Fernando Alonso, Kazuki Nakajima, Sebastien Buemi claim Toyota’s second win at Le Mans…

Toyota Gazoo Racing has claimed its second consecutive victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, following a drama-filled closing hour of the race that saw the World Championship-winning No. 8 crew come out on top.

A sequence of two unscheduled stops for the No. 7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid of Jose Maria Lopez, who had enjoyed a two-minute plus advantage at the time, handed the lead and eventual win to the sister car of Kazuki Nakajima, Fernando Alonso and Sebastien Buemi.

Lopez, whose car had led from Hour 11, pitted with a suspected right-front puncture with 1 hour and 3 minutes to go, only for it to turn out to be an issue with the left-rear tire, in a suspected sensor issue.

It forced the Argentinean to limp around the track for a second stop, after the crew opted to initially change only the right-front.

Nakajima assumed the lead as Lopez made his second stop in as many laps, finishing 16.972 seconds ahead of the No. 7 car of Lopez, Mike Conway and pole-sitter Kamui Kobayashi.

The pair of Toyota TS050 Hybrids, as expected, dominated the twice-around-the-clock enduro, leading every lap in the incident-filled race, which saw no challenge from the LMP1 n0n-hybrids.

Nakajima finished six laps over the No. 11 SMP Racing BR Engineering BR1 AER, which finished third overall and best of the non-hybrids.

Having exchanged the lead early, the No. 7 Toyota of Kobayashi retook the top spot from Buemi through a round of pit stops during the race’s fifth safety car period in the 11th hour.

The position didn’t change until the final hour drama for the No. 7 car.

It marked back-to-back Le Mans wins for the Japanese manufacturer as well as Alonso, Nakajima and Buemi, who have been crowned world driver champions.

While Alonso becomes a three-time FIA world champion, his co-driver Nakajima becomes the first Japanese driver to win a FIA-sanctioned world championship.

In addition to the sensor and tire issues, the No. 7 car had an off-course excursion by Lopez in Hour 8, which handed the lead to Nakajima at the time.

SMP Best of LMP1 Non-Hybrids, Scores First Le Mans Overall Podium

Stoffel Vandoorne, Mikhail Aleshin and Vitaly Petrov completed the overall podium after a near-flawless run for the No. 11 Russian entry.

It came after a trouble-filled race for all of the other non-hybrid LMP1 cars.

The No. 1 Rebellion R13 Gibson of Neel Jani, Andre Lotterer and Bruno Senna came home fourth overall after an early race puncture, spin and trip to the garage, while the sister No. 3 car bounced back from an accident by Thomas Laurent in the seventh hour.

It was later handed a three-minute stop-and-hold penalty in the 17th hour for a rules infringement for not utilizing “re-introduced” tires prior to other tires of that specification in the race, which dropped it from third at the time.

Gustavo Menezes lost further ground after spin in the Porsche Curves one hour later.

The No. 17 SMP BR1 AER retired in the 11th hour after a heavy accident by Egor Orudzhev, who was running third overall at the time.

Fuel pump issues forced the No. 4 ByKolles ENSO CLM P1/01 Gibson out of the race early on, while gearbox failure halted DragonSpeed’s Gulf-liveried BR1 Gibson from DragonSpeed after completing just 76 laps.

Empty win, empty title. Congrats to Toyota and Alonso on winning a title in a field of 2, which needed team orders to to ensure the team mates wouldn’t challenge.

Fascinating race in the non-LMP1 classes. First time in many years I’ve managed to watch a decent portion of the race.

I agree with you @kals. The lack of opposition was felt throughout the race and in fact the whole season. If Toyota would have won in 2016, no one would have complained or even disputed that win.
It were the GT's and to some extent the LMP2's that showed some decent racing.

Next week: the Nürburgring 24h.

Yes, the LOLs! They got rid of the website years too soon! #Yes!Maldonadohascrashedtoday.

The Toyota win does seem a bit empty. No Audis, no Porsche, not even a Peugeot. Everyone else pulled out because money? or something else?

#85 Keating Motorsport Ford Loses GTE Am Win To Fuelling Rig Issue (Updated)

Project 1 Porsche takes the win - Ford Excluded with second decision

The Le Mans dream has turned into a nightmare for Keating Motorsport with the news breaking this evening that the GTE Am class winning Ford GT effort has been handed a 55.2 second time penalty after post race technical inspection found the fuelling rig delivered a full load under the minimum 45 second time allowed.

STOP PRESS –

A second decision – following just a few minutes after the time penalty sees the Ford disqualified for a similar offence to the #68 GTE Pro car, the fuel tank found to be 0.1 litre in excess of the permitted total under the BoP with additional fuel still to be drained.

Project 1 Motorsports, who finished 44 seconds back from the Ford then inherit the win for Patrick Lindsey, Egidio Perfetti and Joerg Bergmeister, the team securing the WEC title on Sunday with their initial second place finish, now becoming a win.

The decision elevates the JMW Motorsport Ferrari to second in class and the #62 WeatherTech Racimg Ferrari of Cooper Macneill, Rob Smith and Toni Vilander claims the final podium spot.

The decision also means that Keating Motorsport lose out on an automatic entry for next year’s race – Project 1 will receive a pair of entries already for their two car WEC squad.

The Stewards Decisions come as a final blow after the #85 Ford was left to fight hard for a win having been forced to pit by race officials for a change to the damaged nose section of the car. The change was made in double quick time, the Keating team assisted by the Chip Ganassi Racing pit crew to execute the job – Ben Keating though was then dealt a stop and go penalty for spinning the wheels out of the pit stop, leaving him to fend off a by then closely following Bergmeister, Jeroen Bleekemolen getting aboard for the final stint and pulling away again.

No. 68 Ford Disqualified for Fuel Capacity Infringement

No. 68 Ford GT exceeds fuel capacity; loses fourth place finish in GTE-Pro…

The No. 68 Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT has been disqualified from the 24 Hours of Le Mans due to having exceeded the permitted fuel capacity.

The Joey Hand, Dirk Mueller and Sebastien Bourdais-driven entry had initially finished fourth in the GTE-Pro class, although was found in post-race scrutineering to have had a fuel capacity of 97.83 liters.

The Ford’s maximum capacity, as detailed in the Balance of Performance, was 97 liters.

According to the FIA Stewards Report, the team explained they were unable to do a calibration check of the fuel tank following the BoP change made on June 10 that saw all GTE-Pro cars gain 1 liter of additional fuel.

It’s believed the Indianapolis-based squad had shipped the cars over with the understanding of running with a 96-liter fuel tank, as laid out in the initial BoP.

The stewards found it as a breach of Article 20 of the LMGTE technical regulations and Article 7.4.3 of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Supplementary Regulations and has resulted in the forfeiture of any prizes and trophies.

It has promoted the Multimatic-run No. 67 Ford of Andy Priaulx, Harry Tincknell and Jonathan Bomarito to fourth in class, ahead of the newly fifth place-finishing No. 69 Ford, the sister car to the disqualified No. 68.

The Fords were competing in their final race at Le Mans as a factory team.

Sportscar365 understands that one other car could be thrown out of the race, also potentially on a fuel infringement.

Le Mans Post-Race Notebook

John Dagys’ post-race notebook from 87th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans…

***This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning No. 8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid of Fernando Alonso, Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi completed 385 laps, three fewer than their victory last year.

***The No. 7 Toyota, which essentially lost the race due to a tire sensor issue, led all but 46 laps of the race. Pole-sitter Kamui Kobyashi admitted post-race that losing out in the final hour was “hard to take it, but this is life, and this is racing.”

***Kobayashi’s co-driver Mike Conway set a new race lap record of 3:17.297, which came on Lap 4. It broke the previous record of 3:17.475 held by Andre Lotterer in an Audi R18 e-tron quattro from 2015.

***Neither of the Toyotas encountered any issues, aside from Lopez’s puncture and earlier off-course excursion for the No. 7 car. Both cars, however, were seen swapping bodywork frequently through the race.

***This year’s Le Mans marked the first in eight years that the top two cars have finished on the lead lap. The last time was in 2011, when the No. 2 Audi R18 TDI beat the No. 9 Peugeot 908 by 13.754 seconds.

***Toyota technical director Pascal Vasselon said the team “anticipated” the No. 3 Rebellion Racing R13 Gibson overtaking the No. 8 Toyota at the start. Gustavo Menezes briefly got past Buemi on the Mulsanne straight, but the positions switched later in the lap. “We decided to pass them where we know we could pass them without risking anything,” Vasselon told Sportscar365.

***While LMP1 non-hybrids once again failed to challenge the Toyotas, the margin of victory was reduced from 12 to six laps this year, with the No. 11 SMP Racing BR Engineering BR1 AER of Vitaly Petrov, Mikhail Aleshin and Stoffel Vandoorne completing 379 laps in the first trouble-free 24-hour race for the Russian-funded prototype.

***The No. 3 Rebellion was given a three-minute stop-and-hold penalty for a “tire rules infringement” in Hour 16, which saw the Swiss squad using tires that were not on the reintroduction list prior to those that were on the list.

***Stoffel Vandoorne equaled his own WEC speed record of 350 km/h (217.5 mph) on lap 40 of the race. The SMP Racing driver had already established the fastest-ever recorded speed in the series during the pre-event Test Day.

***Michelin claimed its 22nd consecutive overall win at Le Mans, having taken victories in all four classes. Remarkably, it was the French tire giant’s first LMP2 class win at Le mans since 2010.

***Brazilian drivers earned victories in three of the four classes, with Andre Negrao (LMP2) picking up his second consecutive class win, Daniel Serra (GTE-Pro) his second in the last three years and Felipe Fraga (GTE-Am) his first in his race debut.

***The GTE-Pro class saw 38 lead changes between seven of the 17 cars in the class. Only cars from Ford and BMW, in their final factory appearances, didn’t lead the race.

***Ford Performance global motorsports director Mark Rushbrook said it was a “bittersweet” finish to its factory Ford GT program at Le Mans, with the cars finishing in positions fourth through seventh in GTE-Pro.

“We accomplished a lot with this program in a very short time frame and that’s a credit to the Ford GT being a great race car, but also having great drivers and partners like Chip Ganassi Racing, Multimatic and Roush Yates,” Rushbrook said.

***It marked the final race outing for the Multimatic-run WEC crew, meanwhile, with the Chip Ganassi Racing-operated IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship team still having a half of a season to run.

***The No. 61 Clearwater Racing Ferrari 488 GTE was given a formal reprimand for the car exceeding its boost levels and being below the required lambda, as declared on the Balance of Performance, early in the race.

***Sportscar365 understands that several teams also received verbal warnings about minimum refueling times at stages through the race, although were not penalized.

***The biggest penalty to come out of the race went to Marcel Fassler who was given six behaviorial warning points and a €7,000 ($7,900) fine for “causing a collision” with the No. 88 Dempsey Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR of Satoshi Hoshino, a sanction that’s understood to not have been well-received in the Corvette camp.

***There were a total of eight safety car periods, adding up to 2 hours and 10 minutes, along with 30 minutes of Full Course Yellows, which were introduced for the first time at Le Mans this year.

***Ben Keating has vowed to return to Le Mans next year after securing an automatic invite for winning GTE-Am with his Keating Motorsports Ford GT, which was a one-off race. It would mark the Texan’s sixth consecutive start, although Keating would not confirm details of the program.

***A number of historic cars were on parade laps prior to the start of the race, including the 1999-winning BMW V12 LMR, driven by Yannick Dalmas, and a Gulf-liveried Ford GT40 driven by Jacky Ickx.

***The ACO released a reported attendance of 252,500 for the weekend, down from the 256,900 spectators from last year and record attendance of 263,500 in both 2015 and 2016.

***Further details on the FIA’s ‘Motorsport Games’ is expected to be confirmed later this week. The “multidisciplinary sporting event” announced in Friday’s World Motor Sport Council will be held in Rome from Oct. 31 – Nov. 3 and is expected to be part of the previously announced FIA GT Nations Cup, which is taking place on the same weekend at the nearby Vallelunga circuit.

GTE Am winning Ford has been DQ'd! Fuel regulation violations. Won't be appealed as Keating admitted mistakes.
