Bottom post of the previous page:

It had more power than a V10, but it used more fuel and was heavier.

*In 1979 and 1980 Ferrari used the 312T engine which was a flat 12. Because of its width they could use less ground effect than other V8 engined cars. In 1979 (312T4) it was the reliability from the engine and also Scheckter, that brought them the title. In 1980 the 312T5 was obsolete.

A theoretical question:

A team of three is participating in the 24 hours of Le Mans. For whatever reasons, all drivers but one are unable to drive the car with only 4 hours and 30 minutes on the clock.
The remaining driver would have to take over, but in doing so exceed his driving limit.

What would happen?

@hollie3sa
They will get a penalty of several laps. You can exceed the minimum and maximum driving time. In a 24 hour race, you are not allowed to drive less than 6 hours during a race and not more than 4 hours in a 6 hour period. Three drivers would drive normally 8 hours over 24 hours when their times are equally balanced. That would mean, each driver would do 2 stints of 4 hours maximum.
Driver A, B, C, A, B, C. Each would drive 4 hours per stint. When one driver has to drive 4,5 hours, in this case, driver C and no one else could take over, the team will suffer a penalty of the number of laps run over that 30 minutes overtime.
Imagine their best lap is 3:28.000 (208 seconds). And his last run is exactly 31 minutes and 20 seconds (1880 seconds) too long.

In those 31 minutes and 20 seconds, they managed to drive 9 laps and 8 seconds.

That will be their penalty.

Mrs Mari Hulman George, the former chairman of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has died.

I remember seeing her on tv during F1s tenure at Indianapolis - good times.

I am very sorry if you find my posts long and boring, I like to type and often go off on a tangent.
If this is the case, you may click here to solve the problem, or alternatively here too.

why did Prost get #7 in 1984, while he was new to the team? (Lauda was #8)

I think you answered your own question - Lauda already had #8.

Sometimes I wonder how 1984 would have panned out, had McLaren retained Watson instead of the ailing Lauda. Remember, the latter was absolutely nowhere in 1985, making me wonder if he wasn't 'aided' in his 84 title.

The reason Lauda got nowhere in 1985 was due to mechanical unreliability. He only finished 3 races that year, one of which he won. He crashed out at Adelaide, but that was due to brake failure. In 1985 Prost ironically had three non finishes only, two of them accidents.

As for 1984, the ailing (your description) Lauda won 5 races, had 4 mechanical failures, and of the races finished he only missed the podium once, finishing 4th at the European GP. He also had a spin that ended his race at Dallas, whilst in a podium position a few laps from the end....but he was one of 5 who ended in the wall there due to the track having broken up. As an aside Prost admits he learnt more from Lauda than from any other teamate
