Rate the 2018 F1 Season Overall

So, the results are IN. According to our individual ratings, the Italian GP was the best race of the season with the British GP hot on its heels in 2nd. A not-so-distant 3rd was the "Incredibly Tedious Before The Safety Car" Azerbaijan GP (@kals :whistling: ). Unfortunately, not one race this year received a 10/10 vote.

Sochi was doomed to be the worst race of the year, but since it was given MINUS ratings and that's inconsistent with our votes, I changed all of those to a 1/10. Hence, on average, Canada was actually worse - a race so forgettable, I forgot to even vote in that thread.

Please vote first, then I'll reveal the season average in a Spoiler below this table and we can compare!

Code: Select all

Italian Grand Prix	7.82/10
British Grand Prix 	7.79/10
Azerbaijan Grand Prix	7.27/10
Austrian Grand Prix 	7.20/10
Chinese Grand Prix 	7.18/10
Bahrain Grand Prix	6.71/10
Brazilian Grand Prix 	6.17/10
German Grand Prix 	5.46/10
Mexican Grand Prix 	5.43/10
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 5.42/10
United States GP 	5.25/10
Japanese Grand Prix 	5.18/10
French Grand Prix 	4.91/10
Monaco Grand Prix 	4.79/10
Hungarian Grand Prix 	4.77/10
Australian Grand Prix 	3.93/10
Singapore Grand Prix 	3.79/10
Belgian Grand Prix 	3.60/10
Spanish Grand Prix 	2.94/10
Russian Grand Prix 	2.63/10

@PTRACER - my comments on the Baku race from the rate thread
kals wrote: 6 years ago I’m not sure about the overall rating. I was enjoying the racing and the build up to see Vettel and Bottas on alternative tyres at the end. I’ll probably go for a 6 or a 7.

I can't remember anything from the British GP, lol. Was it Kimi crashing on the backstraight under that bridge?

7 points. I think it was a pretty decent season. Finally, Mercedes got some opposition. Some new drivers emerged to be a valuable addition to the grid: Gasly, Ocon(abeit not a rookie), Leclerc. Halfway the season it was not that clear that Lewis would clinch another title.

I think you'll find he was making reference to the fact that Paul brought up something I once said about the 2017 Baku race.

6. Better than some past years, not as good as the ones where the title went down to the last race.
However, we got some decent action in a few races.

6, the mid-field racing was great, and maybe Ferrari would have brought the fight all the way do the final few rounds if they hadn't had their by now usual mid-season meltdown.

7 - some ok races, some poor ones. A title battle that was fairly unpredictable until very late on.

Coverage of midfield battles raises the rating a lot higher, without decent coverage I wouldn't be surprised if ALL races got 2 or 3/10.

(Go back 25 years and no one would give too hoots about watching the Minardi of Pierluigi Martini in a side-by-side battle with the Footwork of Gianni Morbidelli and the Sauber of Jean-Christophe Boullion. Only the top 6 would get any airtime.)

16. Malaysia 4.58/10 36 votes
17. China 3.35/10 26 votes
18. Europe 2.97/10 36 votes
Overall there were more decently rated races this year when compared to 2017, only Baku got more than a 7 average last year and that was because it was a mayhemic mess. On the other hand, it seems that some of the races were absolute dogshit this year. I'm glad I didn't stay up for Canada or Russia...

Overall I gave the season a 6, it had some redeeming features like a few reasonably good races and an initially promising championship battle that fizzled out but it wasn't a hugely exciting season overall.

Back in 1996 or 1997 when Bernie launched his original digital TV service, there was a channel dedicated to the midfield for the reason you mention.

Really? Did we have access to that in the UK? I remember when the Interactive F1 channel came out in 2002 and we could finally watch all sessions live and change camera angles with the red button.
