CLAP fastest on day 2 for Ferrari.
CLAP topped the time sheets on his first day testing for Ferrari.... hw was fastest in the morning session and then improved his time again in the afternoon. He clocked a time faster than Vettels yesterday time, albeit 1.7 secs off last weekends pole time set by Lewis. Unlike Seb yesterday, he did not put the car into the fence.
Gasly was 2nd fastest for Red Bull. Lance Stroll ended his first full day driving a Racing Point Force India third-fastest. Valtteri Bottas finished fourth fastest, with Sainz fifth for McLaren. Russell finished 7th in the Williams, with Kubica comfortably the slowest driver of the day, although RK's times were set this morning.
Full day 2 times.

Thanks!
Interesting that on both days, Findia was quite fast relative to the rest. The others' pace seems more or less representative.

Why do they keep doing them there? I don't get it. OK it may be cheaper for the teams but if it's raining then there's no point in even going

Usually the weather there is far more attractive than other European tracks at that time of year. Last year was hit by freak blizzards. Shit happens. Usually the weather is fine and little testing time is lost due to weather. In addition the teams and Pirelli have so much data based on Catalunya over the years it gives a good benchmark for their development, and the variety of corners also makes it attractive for testing. It is also an easy option to have someone jump on a plane for a short flight to bring updated parts from the factories on a daily basis. Logistically it is more attractive, and the weather/temperature is generally not a problem.
They have tried the Middle East for pre season testing..... it was hit by sandststorms, prevalent in the region at that time of year and rendering running impossible.
Weatherwise, Spain is as good an option as it gets. Portugal would be ok but I am not sure of whether the track is up to F1 standards.

I cant access the official FIA doc listing the tracks by grade but if wiki is to be believed Estoril is grade 1. Algarve is grade 2 but I know that it used to be 1T but that my be just to safe money on the owners part. Plus there are several other tracks in Spain that allow for F1 testing, Aragon, Valencia and Jerez come to mind.

Mugello with all these long sweeping bends & chicanes would be AWFUL for F1. No overtaking whatsoever. It's Circuit de Catalunya on speedball

I take it that means something to do with moving to 18inch wheels for F1 in the future.
Edit.... google translation tells me yes to above, from 2021, with testing of the concept starting next July. (Presume next July means 2020.... if they meant 2018 they would say this July in my world.
