2019 silly season thread

#1

Post by John »

A bit surprised that we don't have a thread for this, seeing as the 2019 silly season thread pretty much started during the latter half of the 2017 season.

First snippet is a rumor regarding Ricciardo, and wether or not he has already signed a pre-contractual agreement with Ferrari for 2019.

https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/opin ... nd-ferrari

Which would really spice things up.

Where would that leave:

Bottas
LeClerc
Gasly (promotion?)
Sainz (who might prefer to stick around at Renault, apparently)
Hulkenberg?

If Ricciardo moves then Red Bull will take back Sainz, who is on loan. Sainz may want to stay at Renault yet will probably not have much of a say. While Gasly was mightily impressive at Bahrain he’s still not ready for the main team, see example of Daniil Kvyat.

Part of me wonders whether Vettel and Hamilton may retire altogether at the end of this season. And according to some Spanish media, Alonso will leave McLaren at the end of this year.

Wasn't Vettels contract extended for three further seasons starting in 2018?
I wonder if Mercedes might want to go after him - German driver in German team etc.

Hamilton has hinted at retirement a few times already. I think Seb wants another title before he calls it quits however. Or at the very least, a proper go at it.

Nor Vettel, nor Hamilton will retire before trying to beat Schumacher's tally.

Regarding Vettel, that’s what I’ve been thinking.

The Hamilton retirement talk is basically a blackmail to urge Mercedes to provide the best car. I wouldn't pay any attention to that whatsoever.

That’s an interesting theory. What’s the basis of that?

Common sense ;) The louder someone talks about retirement then less likely it's going to happen with immediate effect. Hamilton will give it another go even under the 2021 rules IMO. He's still got a realistic chance at catching Schumacher's wins record too. 4 seasons of 7 wins each? I can see that happen.

You make it appear like he’s shouting about retirement, which he’s not.

Massa keeps saying he retired as loud as he can, versus no one would have him :P.

And that's why we should ignore all this talk without going all Freud on it :whistling:
