Only just over a month away and I am definately going rain hail or shine.
Most people here know my love of anything F5000.... well it is going to be Heaven for me with the event being based around 50 years of F5000 racing, with F5000 being the featured category.
Over 30 cars entered, from around the world. See some proper racing.... and faster given the old F5000's are still quicker round PI than a V8 Supercar.

Phillip Island Classic 2018 Dedicated to Celebrate 50 Years of Formula 5000 Racing

Regarded as one of the largest historic racing events in the world, the 2018 Phillip Island Classic will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the spectacular Formula 5000 worldwide racing with a field of more than 30 cars from Australia and New Zealand

Set for 9th to 11th March, 2018, at the highly acclaimed Phillip Island circuit, the event will create international interest with five legends of Formula 5000 racing confirmed as patrons for the 50th celebratory year event.

The patrons include Alfredo (Alfie) Constanzo retired Italian born Australian racing driver who competed in four Australian Grand Prix and won four Australian Drivers’ Championships, equalling the record set by Bib Stillwell.

Kevin Bartlett – often known as ‘KB’ is a former Australian open wheel and touring racing driver who won the Australian Drivers’ Championship in 1968 and in 1969, as well as the Bathurst 1000 in 1974 and was named in Wheels Magazine’s Annual Year Book in 2004 as one of Australia’s 50 greatest race drivers.

Alan Hamilton – Twice Australian Sports Car Drivers’ Champion, Porsche Importer and Team Owner and four times winner of the Gold Star Championship with Alfie Constanzo. Alan was third in the 1971 Australian Grand Prix and second at Bathurst in 1974 with Colin Bond.

Tasmanian, John McCormack became one of the leading Formula 5000 racers in the 1970’s winning the Australian Drivers’ Championship three times. John won the New Zealand Grand Prix in 1973/74 and as well as racing open wheelers he raced sport sedans and touring cars.

Ken Smith MBE from New Zealand won the New Zealand Grand Prix in 1976, 1990 and in 2004 and raced Formula Ford, Formula 5000, Formula Pacific, Formula Mondial and Toyota Racing Series. Ken has competed over 59 consecutive seasons on the motor racing circuit. He has won the Gold Star Drivers Award five times, Formula 5000 Revival three times, the Penang Grand Prix three times, the Selanger twice and the Malaysian Grand Prix once. In 1995 Ken was inducted into the New Zealand motorsport Hall of Fame.

VHRR Formula 5000 Group Representative Bob Harborow commented “We will witness some spectacular racing and no doubt some great Trans-Tasman rivalry in the International Challenge at Phillip Island in March as the Formula 5000 cars are currently faster than the V8 Supercars racing. To showcase this and celebrate the Formula 5000’s some of the races will be longer and patrons will witness cars such as the A50 Matich car which won the Australian Grand Prix and the MR8 Elfin 5000 of Garrrie Cooper and Vern Schuppan which raced at both Laguna Seca, and Watkins Glen, USA,” he said.

I went to the Phillip Island Historics today (Saturday)..... had a brilliant day in glorious 30+C clear skies. Some fab cars, F5000s F1's Sports Cars and others too many to mention.

I came this close to sitting in Peter Gethind VDS Chevron, now owned by a guy I used to race against, Bob Tweedie (and driven to great success by son Tom Tweedie) but as I was about to do it they had to jack it up to do some gearbox linkage adjustments before the race, so my fantasy got put on hold. Tom won the race so I guess it was worth it. I took plenty of pics of the F5000 races and general paddock stuff, so will upload a few tomorrow.

I was going to stay the night and go tomorrow as well, but finding a motel was impossible given it is also a public holiday on Monday so the island was packed with tourists and race goers. No vacancies anywhere and certainly not for one night bookings. Any space was only availableto those wanting multiple nights.

You too old to kip in the car then?
I am very sorry if you find my posts long and boring, I like to type and often go off on a tangent.

34C with no shower in the morning and having to be sociable with friends I hadnt seen for a while.... no thanks. Mind you I have done worse at lesser temperatures at the British GP back in the day, sleeping in transit vans etc so yes maybe a bit too old and used to my comforts. :haha:

As promised, some photos from Phillip Island Historics.

I'll start with the F5000 races.

Taken from the approach to the hairpin (T4)

Some more from PI, this time non F5000 photos from PI.

Included in this lot are the Ferrari 126C in the pit garage, John Bowe in his March F1 car, the 'Old Yeller as driven in the day by Shelby and Gurney, and the Allard J2 of Carrol Shelby, the Just Cars GRM Monaro 24Hour Bathurst winner amongst other more obvious ones. The Steve McQueen image is a mural on the side of a huge transporter!

Oh yeah and a Vincent HRD for @Andy

A few more, though no comments means limited interest I guess. In this lot is a McLaren road car (also in the pic behind the F1 Ferrari and Penzoil Indycar,) plus the Maybach, also Kevin Bartlett, Aussie legend was there, as was the Colin Vandervell Triplex March car that I recall watching many times in F Atlantic races back in the UK in 1973 when he swept the floor with it.

@Everso Biggyballies
Only came across this post now, as the past week was somewhat stressful.
Thank you very much for the Vinnie pic.

On another note regarding the Steve McQueen Le Mans pic, Steve's German co-actor in the Le Mans movie passed away last week.
Forgot about his name but over here was famous for the role of the captain in a tv movie series called 'Traumschiff'. Not my pair of boots but there you go.
