Stage 5

Looks like Loebs rally is over. He was stuck in the dunes in total for 3 hours and in addition Daniel Elena has suffered an injury.
The Peugeot driver got stuck twice in the first special of today's stage before an injury to co-driver Daniel Elena forced Loeb to withdraw.

"The sand was extremely loose. We got stuck once and managed to get going again. In another part of the race, we got to a crest where another car was stuck. We were following Nasser and saw him go over, so we did the same, but I hadn't realised there was a hole behind the crest. And, bam, we went right into the hole! We waited for a truck to pull us out. Right now we feel like c... and bam. Right now I'm trying to see how my co-driver's doing: we're driving really slowly and, as soon as I go over 30 km/h he screams inside the car. He's hurting, we'll see what's the matter. Right now, I don't think we can go on. He's boss, I don't want to force him do to anything, but it looks bad."
De Villiers and AL-Attiyah have fallen further behind as Peterhansel pushes his advantage and now has 30 minutes over Sainz, and Ten Brinke in 3rd another 45 minutes behind...

I cant get over how tough and brave these guys are, particularly the bikers.

In yesterdays stage 5 Rafal Sonik, the Polish rider and winner in 2015, had a spill on his bike. He has had to withdraw from the rally prior to the start of stage 6 today. The reason he has had to retire... he fractured both his tibia and fibula during the stage 5 crash yet still, despite his injuries managed to get to the finish.

Unfortunately, however, he has had to withdraw from the rally today. To break both bones in your leg and continue to ride through the terrain they are covering and complete the stage is a remarkable effort.

A well deserved rest day today.....

Some need it more than others. Once more we are getting tales of the competitor cameraderie and willingness to stop and help others in need of assistance. W have seen in the truck category the leader at the time on his side in the dunes with no chance of unassisted recovery. One of the other leading trucks stopped without hesitation and towed the stricken Kamaz on to its wheels. With minimal delay the leader was able to continue still in the lead.

I have just read this story of one of the bikers stopping not once but twice to help others, costing himself several hours delay in the process:
A welcome day of rest after a 36 hours stage
Early Wednesday morning Luc van de Huijgevoort took off to start the fifth stage of this Dakar. Late Thursday night he entered the bivouac in La Paz. Helping out other competitors had cost the Dutch rookie a heap of time. In stage 5 he first helped a South African rider who got stuck in the dunes. Then they found another biker who was exhausted. They stayed with the guy for almost three hours and then moved on the three of them, finishing the stage late at night. Half past three at night number 118 entered Arequipa, where had to visit the doctors to make sure he was fit enough to continue. “But I didn’t have any problem. I just lost a lot of time helping others”, Van de Huijgevoort says. “After the medical check I had just enough time to finish my documents to cross the border, to eat something and have a quick look at the roadbook. At half past five I had to move on again to take the start in the sixth stage. I was the last rider to start.”
Even without any sleep Van de Huijgevoort, who runs a supermarket in daily life back in the Netherlands, didn’t have much problems finishing the stage. “There were so many people to cheer for us. That really helped me through. But now I’m very happy to have made it to La Paz and enjoy the rest day. I could sleep for days.”
A great attitude and one of the unique values of the Dakar. Long may it continue.

Had a bit of a busy weekend and missed keeping up to date with Dakar. However (old news now) Peterhansel, previously leading by half an hour went into a hole in the dunes ans broke his suspension and losing an hour and a half. It would have been longer had teamate Despres not stopped to assist. Peterhansel however went out the next day and won the stage. Currently Sainz is the leader by an hour or so from Al-Attiyah withPeterhansel a few minutes back in 3rd.

Todays stage 9 has been cancelled
The organisers of the Dakar had no choice but to cancel stage 9, which was supposed to take place between Tupiza and Salta on Monday. Weather conditions in the area in the last few days are preventing assistance crews from refurbishing race vehicles for tomorrow's stage after the demanding marathon stage. The field of the Dakar will therefore head to the Salta bivouac by road. The rally will resume with stage 10 from Salta to Belén.

Despite the 10 minute penalty for Sainz, he still leads the rally by just under an hour.
Good to see the Fuchs Borgward back in the top 10 (just, at #10)

We go to stage 10 next, with yesterdays stage 9 cancelled as posted previously. 5 stages to go inclusive.
Sainz could still win comfortably if he takes it easy and loses 5 minutes per stage. :fingers:
(I would prefer Carlos to win over Al-Attiyah, and Mr Dakar (Peterhansel) has won enough of them (13 in total, including 6 on bikes)

In the car category Sainz is doing what he needs to... ensuring he finishes without losing too much time or going for stage glory. I believe there may be team orders in place at Peugeot now, with them holding the top 2 spots. The 3 Peugeots all finished the stage with times within a few seconds of each other. Ten Brinke took another stage win.

Al=Attiyah has had a couple of bad days and now trails Perterhansel and Sainz. With 3 stages to go Sainz has a 50 minute buffer over Peterhansel. Ten Brinke took the spoils on stage 11.

In the bikes injury has forced Barreda out, leaving Walkner at the top. Barreda injured his knee back on stage 7 but now he has had to pull out. Price got lost yesterday and has lost a heap of time, now 40 minutes off the leader in 3rd.. He did however win todays stage.
The compressed leader board we saw a couple of days ago with a few minutes covering the top half a dozen has now made way to a 32 minute gap from 1st to 2nd.

Carlos Sainz is now back to an hour clear of Peterhansel, having had his 10 minute penalty from a couple of days ago rescinded.

I thought at the time hearing Carlos' explanation that it was at best a harsh penalty with the fault seeming to be more with the quad than Carlos. Carlos had activated his warning for the quad to move over which it did. However the quad went into a sand dune and lost control, coming back in front of the passing Sainz. There was no contact.

Peugeot produced new evidence in the form of telemetry from Sainz’ car which demonstrated that Carlos slowed to around 50km/h as he approached the quad and 37km/h when passing it.

Sounds like he hit Donald Trump judging by the Quad's quotes:

Stage 12 for bikes and quads cancelled.

Not good news for Toby Price in his slim chance of getting any glory beyond the 3rd place he now holds following his first stage win of 2018 yesterday. This cancellation leaves just 2 stages for him to make up the 40 minute gap to the leader.
Toby Price’s hopes of a Dakar comeback have been hit by the cancellation of Stage 12 for Bikes and Quads.

The day’s running between Fiambalá/Chilecito to San Juan was called off for the two divisions due to unfavourable weather forecasts.

“Following the study of the safety conditions for bikes and quads race tomorrow, despite a first modification of the stage announced this afternoon, having consulted the competitors grouped at Fiambala’s marathon bivouac, the Race Direction has taken the decision to cancel the 12th special stage for bikes and quads,” read a statement from Dakar organisers.
The cars and trucks running is unaltered and goes ahead as scheduled.

Al-Attiyah won todays stage after a see saw duel with Peterhansel, the two trading the lead several times before Al-Attiyah came good at the end of the stage. Ten Brinke, the recent stage pacesetter seemed to lose pace today and trails 3rd place and Toyota team mate Al-Attiyah by 12 minutes. Peterhansel still holds 2nd place overall just over 20 minutes clear of Al-Attiyah. Sainz was cautious losing 15 minutes to the leaders but still holds a 44 minute buffer over his Peugeot team mate Peterhansel

As previously mentioned the bikes and quads were cancelled today, and at the time of posting this the trucks were still competing and so no results as yet.

Stage 13 is underway, with Al-Attiyah leading the cars off having won yesterdays stage.
However things turned bad for him as he battles with Peterhansel for 2nd place on the podium, as shortly into special part of the stage his car stopped, He restarted again, but lost 10 minutes maybe more. Al-Attiyah started today only 12 minutes ahead of teamate and 4th place holder Ten Brinke, so it is tight for the final podium spot with today and one stage tomorrow left.

Sainz is still controlling top spot, albeit today nearly 10 minutes off the pace. He still leads comfortably (my estimation 35 minutes) despite his gearbox problems yesterday. Presumably that would have all been fixed overnight. :fingers: :fingers:
Shortly after the cars started the day’s special, Nasser Al-Attiyah (who is opening the way) is already in difficulty. The Qatari’s Toyota has been immobile for more than 10 minutes.

Nasser Al-Attiyah’s vehicle is moving again, but the Qatari has lost plenty of time after 19 kilometres of the special. Perhaps his place on the podium could be in danger today!
In the bikes Toby Price has completed the first part of the special with a lead of just a minute over his team-mate Antoine Meo. Kevin Benavides is hanging in there, but still trails his pursuer in the general standings by 2’10’’, whilst the provisional race leader Matthias Walkner is not taking any risks and lies 6’38’’ behind the Australian.
