After withdrawing from this year’s Ulster Grand Prix, Guy Martin has decided to call time on his international road racing career.

The TT racer and truck mechanic turned TV star made an unexpected return to racing in 2017 after signing a deal to join a Honda dream team alongside 23-time TT winner John McGuinness, but that dream soon turned into a nightmare for Martin and the Louth-based team.

Late delivery of the all-new Fireblade left Martin and McGuinness with limited testing time on their superbike machines, meaning they’d stretch testing time into the international road racing season.

With McGuinness then injured at the North West 200 after an issue with the Fireblade’s kit ECU unexpectedly blipped the throttle, Martin was left to go it alone for TT, but things didn’t go to plan.

After a crash in the Superbike race, he would withdraw from the Senior, and after one final test with the team at Cadwell Park he has opted to call time on his road racing activities.

Explaining his decision to call it a day in an exclusive interview with MCN’s Matt Wildee, Guy said: “Racing’s been good to me, but I’m bored of it. You spend the early part of the year preparing for the season – testing, racing, talking about it, and then doing it all over again. It’s like Groundhog Day. It’s time to stop.”

A shame but understandable. It's a travesty to racing that Guy doesn't have a TT win to his name.

Much like Michael Rutter should have a couple of BSB titles to his name.
Another reason not told but adding in is that he soon becomes father. On a much less popular note Steve Mercer quit road racing as well.

Guy will surely missed in racing, but i think he will be somewhere around the paddock everytime.

Couldn't agree more. Rutter at the very least should have been the 2005 BSB Champion. Still to this day I cannot explain his inexplicable performance drop in the late stages of the season having held an almost insurmountable championship lead.

Good on Guy. If he doesn't need to, and doesn't want to, why the hell not stop.

The worlds fastest road race, the Ulster GP, kicks off with practice tomorrow and the Dundrod 150 road races on Thursday. The feature Ulster GP then takes place on Saturday.

The first two days of this years Ulster GP as well as the Dundrod 150 road races showed really promising results so far. First William Dunlop posted a new speed trap record at Joeys Windmill by being clocked with 200.4 mph and then Peter Hickman took victory in the Dundrod 150 superbike race by posting a new outright lap record with an average of 134.210 mph ! However, the downside was a reportedly serious accident in one of the Dundrod 150 races involving two riders at least. William Dunlop gave up on the Dundrod 150 races today since he is carrying a wrist injury with him but hopes he can take part in Saturdays Ulster GP races.

The races will be covered with live audio on Saturday from 10:00am british time on the BBC NI Sport website.

Thanks for the racing update Andy.
The organisers have not released any details about the identity or condition of the riders involved. Hoping for the best and a speedy full recovery for those involved. :fingers:

We now have an update on the severity of the accident.

Sadly Jamie Hodson, 35, the reigning Manx GP Supertwins champion has been confirmed to have lost his life following the two bike crash at Joey's Windmill mentioned previously. The only good news to come from the accident is that the second rider involved has been released from hospital. The other news relating to the crash is that thew second rider involved was Jamie's brother Rob Hodson.

Thoughts and condolences to Rob Hodson and the Hodson family and friends.
RIP Jamie Hodson.

A 3rd rider involved in the Jamie Hodson incident has been named as Gavin Lupton. During Wednesdays Qualifyings Stephen Lynd had a serious accident. The news release on both riders says 'critically ill'.

On a personal note, I had firm chats with all three riders involved in the Jamie Hodson incident during my TT paddock strolls. All three seemed very nice guys to me.

All the very best for a speedy but more importantly full recovery to Gavin and Rob.
Thoughts and prayers to Rob and all of the Hodson family.

RIP, Jamie

Another report says that Lupton came off at Lougher's, formerly known as Budore section.

However, roads close by 9:30am and commentary is supposed to go live from 10am on the BBC NI Sports page or Radio Ulsters 1341am service.

Fast and safe UGP!
