Bottom post of the previous page:

Thank You!!!
Last season I got this as "Real Road Racing" but nothing this year.
I love it.
I was looking to post in one of those "Gotta Make Racing Safer" threads elsewhere, that I think that on that subject people fall into two basic categories. Those that feel the sooner we get remote control cars and fans seated a half mile back watching their robot cars race at 300mph on big screen TVs the better, and, guys like me that feel that the TT and this type of racing is the only real racing left on the planet.

It still is on BBC, ITV and British Eurosport 2. Sadly my sat dish, with its 110cm in diameter, is not big enough anymore to catch programs between about 7pm to 1am, which is when most of the real road racing programs on BBC and ITV get aired. Upgrading to 180cm for all night SD feeds is not completely out of question, but requires bigger construction work, which I`m not getting into before I`ve finally enlarged my flat.
For that reason, I got me a Fire TV box from Amazon lately but I really need someones help to make it work on above mentioned providers iplayers. There's been a 3 part series called 'Road Riders' aired on BBC NI, for example, which I`m really keen to get ahold of because it is about the 'real roads' riders over in Ireland. And usually the BBC also has reviews on the bigger meetings, such as the NW200 and Cookstown 100, too.

And yes, I too feel that it is one of the few types of real racing left. Only single events like hillclimbs such as Pikes Peak and the x-raid rallies come close to it, although a much different type of racing. Take Guy Martin's mishap at Tandragee, for example and compare it to Zarcos lightly overmotivated dive on Rossi at COTA about 24h later. At COTA they gave Rossi a 0.3sec pen for being closer to Marquez after avoiding a crash by taking a straight line through COTAS immense parking lots. On the other hand Guy made a mistake by braking way too late and took out another competitor with him because there was next to no run off. Even if there was a road past that, Guy would have been penalised himself by just taking that escape road. Call me conservative but to me this is how racing should be. Race to the conditions and not provide the conditions before you even get to race, like it is on most short circuits these days.

That said there was a huge turnout at Tandragee last night to escort Dario Cecconis hearse on the way to complete his final lap at the circuit he loved most. I find this a lovely way to say good bye seldom found in the pro world of racing.

Tribute lap held in memory of Italian racer Dario Cecconi

A tribute lap in memory of Italian racer Dario Cecconi was held on Thursday night at the Tandragee 100 course where he lost his life in a crash last Saturday.

A hearse carried the 38-year-old’s remains on one final lap of the 5.3-mile circuit he loved so dearly.

Hundreds of bikers and fans turned out to pay their respects.

Mr Cecconi, from Livorno in Tuscany, crashed on the final lap of the Senior Support race. He was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries and his death was announced on Tuesday night.

His friend, Marta Coviola – who runs the Italian motorcycling website Road Racing Core – attended the tribute lap and told the News Letter Dario loved Northern Ireland and Tandragee especially more than his own hometown.

“I’ve known Dario since 2011 and I met him in person for the first time in 2012 at the North West 200. He was where the Italians were parked in the paddock and Stefano Bonetti was there. He was always full of news for me,” she said.

“He came six times to the Tandragee 100 and two or three times to the North West, or more. Also Killalane and then the ‘Ulster’ last year for the first time, which was one of his dreams. Another dream was the Southern 100 but he didn’t go there.

“In 2010 he decided to come here because he loved Northern Ireland. He was never into short circuits or anything. The Manx was another dream but he didn’t have sponsors or anything for money. He was not able to ask for money!

“He loved this place almost more than his hometown and said it was his second family. He was almost more understood here than in Italy. He goes to the races alone with his van and no mechanics and if you say this in Italy, everyone judges you, like you are stupid. They say, ‘this is not the way’.”

Marta learned the seriousness of Dario’s injuries almost immediately as she acted as a translator for those who had accompanied him to the hospital.

She has vowed to attend the Cookstown 100 this weekend after booking her trip some time ago.

Although she admits she was unsure whether or not to go to the race, she feels it is what Dario would have wanted.

“Unfortunately I heard the news straight away because I was a translator for the people who were in hospital with him and also Francesca [Benvenuti, Dario’s partner] and Luca [Dario’s brother].

“We had a group on Facebook and I was constantly translating from English to Italian. It was very hard, unbelievable,” she said.

“I was not sure to come to Cookstown but I think Dario would have liked that.”

Marta’s brother, Nicola, said he was moved to see so many people turning out to say a final farewell to Dario.

“To see all these people here for him, a single Italian from nowhere, there is so much love for him. It’s good.”
I said it before and I`ll say it again. As a biker you can pretty much directly relate to what's going on at the circuits. Whether it is on the roads or at a short circuit and it doesn't matter if the races are about high end prototypes or pretty much stock bikes. The only difference is, that the race bikes are much faster. Other than that the same physics apply. No gimmicks like DRS, much like Steve Parrish once said: "DRS? Hah, here it is called sitting up or going flat on the tank."

Since the TT finished the Cock o'the North at Scarborough and the Skerries 100 in the Republic of Ireland have been held while the Kells road races were cancelled. The Cock o'the North was dominated by Dean Harrison, while Derek Sheils took an almost clean sweep with a 9/10 races in the Skerries 100 last weekend.
This weekend the Race of the South in Walderstown, Republic of Ireland, and the 53rd Imatranajo at Imatra, Finland are held. Derekk Sheils continues his dominance in Ireland with pole positions in the Superbike and Supersport classes. The 53rd Imatranajo hosts the IRRC for the 2nd year in succession and I`m pleased to tell that the Penz13 squad of Rico Penzkofer handed their boss a clean podium sweep as a birthday present in the first Superbike race today with Michael Rutter taking the laurels from Dan Kneen and Alessandro Polita.

A look into the calendar and the Southern 100 road races in the Isle of Man will commence Monday and held until Championship Day Thursday. While Monday till Wednesday will see evening racing only, the Thursday will be run all day bar small lunch break. Manx Radio will broadcast every day live on its AM 1368 online player.

Exciting times ahead :)

Dean Harrison clinches the Southern 100 Solo Championship by 0.131 of a sec from Dan Kneen. In third follows Michael Dunlop 0.515 of a sec down on the winner. Michael Dunlop posted a new absolute lap record for the S100 with 2:12.231 min / 115.707 mph on the 9th and final circuit.

The sidecar championship race was red flagged and not restarted following an incident at Cross-Four-Ways between leaders Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes & 2nd placed Ben & Tom Birchall. Both outfits were claimed responsible for the incident and following red flag, so that the victory fell into hands of then 3rd placed John Holden/Lee Cain from Wayne Lockey/Mark Sayers and Conrad Harrison/Andrew Winkle.

After all this was an absolute record breaking 62nd edition of the Southern 100 road races and I`m really eager to pick up on both the ITV4 review in a couple days time and Dukes review dvd later in the year !
