Yes, a Lotus 38 in this thread confused me too. What's weird about it?
At the time, it was definitely "out there".

It was the third year for Lotus at the Speedway, the fifth Month of May since the rear-engine revolution began. Hardly weird by then. It was refined and a template for much of the grid even.

This, on the other hand:

Not only that, offset suspension cars preceded the 60s revolution anyway.

I remember seeing that six-wheeled sprintcar now. Must have driven like a dog!

Meanwhile, in sportscar racing...

The car with three wheels on the right and one on the left shattered records at its first outing when being tested pre-season. It was that fast that the administration banned the car before it could ever participate in a race. Very comparable to the Lotus 88.

A beautifully ugly car! It wasn't too bad on the track, either.

1970 Mac's IT Can-Am car. Four 2-stroke Rotex motorcycle engines, one at each corner. Four wheel drive a different way.

(PS this is my first post since joining - I can't see anything on this page which will enable me to post an image - help!)

Another weird cars are the Formula V-cars from the 1960s and the Formula Junior Formula 3 Cooper from the 1950s.
A bit like: form a bit bodywork around the Driver, put a hoover engine behind him and attach the wheels of a pushcart.

This is the image I had omitted from my previous post - 4 engines at 4 corners. I have no idea how the final drive worked.
