Hideous weather today in Victoria, with the temperature c 10C and much precipitation, although we have had one session sessions in the semi dry. Today we have also had hailstones at PI and showers of varying magnitude. Best lap times about 5 secs off last years dry pace.
Some qualy shocks in the pre qualy practice, with both works Yamahas and Vinales having to take part in Q1 for the GP race..

Some qualy shocks in the pre qualy practice, with both works Yamahas and Vinales having to take part in Q1 for the GP race..
Result: MotoGP Australian Grand Prix Practice 3Marc Marquez pipped rising Australian star Jack Miller in a rain-affected third practice for the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.
While new world champion Marquez topped the timesheet 0.05s faster than local hope Miller, Yamaha’s
Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo struggled and will have to qualify through Q1.
Rossi finished 12th fastest with team-mate Lorenzo last of the 21 riders.
Rain fell on and off throughout the hour-long session, which was extended after poor weather saw yesterday’s second practice abandoned.
Times initially tumbled relative to Friday efforts on a drying track.
Marquez took his Repsol Honda to the top just as light rain began to fall again after nine minutes, with stand-in team-mate Nicky Hayden moving to second shortly after.
Miller braved the drizzle with slick tyres on his Marc VDS Honda, moving up to second position just beyond the quarter-hour mark as most ran on intermediate rubber.
A spell of heavier rain followed again, before the Australian was one of the first to back on slicks as he set back-to-back fastest laps with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Marquez, however, regained the ascendancy shortly after as he set a trend of an intermediate front tyre and slick rear.
With the lap coming just as showers started again, Marquez’s time remained unchallenged as only a handful of riders, Lorenzo included, circulated on a wet track in the final 10 minutes.
The outgoing world champion had failed to make an impact on the timing screens at any point during the session, and he and Rossi both go into Q1 as a factory Yamaha pair for the first time ever.
While combined times from the first three practice sessions determine the start list for Q1, each rider set their personal best laps during FP3.
Aleix Espargaro (Suzuki Ecstar), Pol Espargaro (Tech 3 Yamaha), and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) completed the top five.
Australian wildcard Mike Jones overshadowed his more experienced Avintia Ducati team-mate Loris Baz to finish in 18th position.

Forgot to add, tomorrows forecast for PI is again cool (max 14C) and showers of varying intensity diminishing late afternoon. Winds south to southwesterly 25 to 30 km/h. Potentially with the MotoGP race being later in the day there is a chance that MIGHT be dry, or at least less wet.
But given the poor accuracy of our forecasts it could be all change tomorrow.

It was a great, weather stricken FP4 and quali in MotoGP. Much more interesting than an entire F1 race, how a canadian mate of me put it. At least I`m not alone with this opinion
Great to see Bradl starting from P8 which was clearly possible at Motegi already. While he lead q2 early he beat the factory Ducati of Dovizioso and the factory Yamaha of JLo in the end.
Yamaha - The customer Tech3 Yamaha of Pol Espargaro became the best Yamaha, starting from p3 tomorrow behind the semi-factory Honda of Cal Crutchlow and the full factory Honda of Marc Marquez.
JLo only finished 12th after looking strong in Q1 but ultimately failed to deliver on the drying tarmac in Q2 while the Doctor didn't even escape Q1.
Roll on the races. Another 3:40am start for me though
Braaaaaaapppp !!

After my last post at my home (about 150 klm towards the city from PI) it went from a thunderstorm with lightning and huge winds to bright sunshine with blue skies followed by hail all within an hour.
It would have been a nightmare for those (thousands) camping in the mud at PI. But as you say it spices up the racing, and offers challenges not normally seen.. F1 should try it one day (without the SC.)

Talk about whacky races.

McPhee is wake and alert and apparently "okay". Thank god.
MotoGP race was okay, plenty of good battles going on in the field. So happy for Crutchlow! And PI is a brilliant circuit. Just brilliant!

what a nasty incident, precisely 5 years after Simoncelli's crash.
fortunately the angle and relative speed was different today.

The very reason I always drag my sorry butt out of bed when races are on there. My Canuck mate asked me why I think that Lukey Heights is probably the best corner of the entire season and I had to explain blind crest and a couple of different possible lines ending in a hairpin. The number of moves there, often 3 or even 4 wide, are just beautiful to watch. Even if there ain't a move at all. And the final bit towards finish line. You find such a bit only on road race circuits like the Ulster GP or the NW200 these days.John wrote:... And PI is a brilliant circuit. Just brilliant!
Brilliant venue, unfortunately the only other remaining one next to Mugello

Marquez chooses the least relevant race to make his first mistake of the season. It was a good race, not like 2015 but still entertaining. Well done to Cal. What a comprehensive performance and he's now within realistic shot of 5th in the championship (with Pedrosa out). He was catching Marquez bit by bit so I wonder if that contributed to Marquez needing to push as hard as he said he was and lead to that mistake.
Great race by Rossi and the total opposite by Lorenzo, who started ahead of Vale. Shame for Nicky Hayden who was riding well until Miller bumped him.
And McPhee should probably go and buy a lottery ticket.

I do not think that Marquez choose the least relevant race for the second big mistake. I believe he restrained himself over the course of the season, kind of hold back on going to full limit but gave it a go at PI and overshot the limit.kals wrote:Marquez chooses the least relevant race to make his first mistake of the season.
