That Ulster GP when Michael Dunlop fell in the hairpin while pressuring Guy Martin. Probably the greatest race I ever saw.

Started watching sometime mid seventies; precious few full-race broadcasts back then (German GP most years, and a few far-away locations that aired around midnight in Europe) so you had to make do with what you were fed, including the dreaded 2'59" clips - still, manna to a young boy starving of F1!!

If you grew up in Germany, then you were lucky. ORF broadcast more Formula 1 races live than any other channel (as far as I'm aware) and they didn't throw any of them away. They've been leaking onto the internet for the past 10 years

A few of those that stand out, for one reason or another:

British GP 1975 - one of my earliest memories: lots of confusion, drama, what-ifs and best of all: nobody hurt
Austria 1982 - edge-of-the-seat stuff, with a fairy-tale ending
Long Beach 1983 - just a crazy race
Hungary 1988 - two of the best drivers ever in arguably the best car ever, trying to outsmart each other - too bad the wrong one won.
Hungary 1997 - dreadful track, but another memorable race - it almost snowed in hell!!

I've never seen the 1988 Hungary race - was that when Mansell made THE pass on Ayrton Senna? Or was that 1990?

I've never seen the 1988 Hungary race - was that when Mansell made THE pass on Ayrton Senna? Or was that 1990?

Neither, that was 1989!

All I really remember of Hungary 1988 was that Murray was off motorcycling or something and Simon Taylor was drafted in for BBC commentary duties - a very fine journalist but I can't stand the sound of his voice!

Well, no ORF available where I live, so no lucky me. I've seen that '75 British GP broadcast a few times, but it's very poor, misses most of the interesting points.

Hungary '88 was Senna and Prost in the McLaren/Hondas, with Prost starting from 10th or so and catching up bit by bit, finally overtaking Senna but by then his tyres were gone, so he lost it again. Senna drove really smart, didn't extend himself and had the better tyres for the last few laps. I don't even remember who was third, it was mostly only those two all through that year.

First race seen live: Zandvoort 1979 or 1980, as a little boy, who can’t even remember who (or maybe better: what colour car) had won. Then flash forward to in chronological order:

Brazil 2003, red flagged because of the crash involving Alonso and Webber, that ended the race. That in itself isn’t that special, but all the spins in especially the soaked Senna-s and offcourse the fact that it took days to find out who had won (Fisichella, driving a Jordan), while initially Raikkönen was declared the winner, makes this race stand out in this world of computers and cameras. Brazil stands out when it comes to remarkable races.

Nürburgring 2007, seen live. Unforeseen rain right at about the moment when the race started, gave Markus Winkelhock, replacement-driver who qualified last, in his first and only F1-racestart, in a Spyker, a P1 at the openingstage of the race. I remember the confusion at the stands, because initially some, including me, thought that the Spyker already had been lapped… After a red flag (5 drivers spun off within a lap or two, most at turn one), it went back to dry and back to normal when the race resumed, until at the end another shower lightend things up again. (Alonso won from Massa, there was some anger by Alonso, because Massa “had hit him”)

Old topic, but new here so thought I might make a contribution. Been watching since on/off since 2000, seriously since 2008.

- Interlagos 2008: This one has had plenty said
- Silverstone 2015: Even though the finish wasn't as exciting seeing Williams perform was amazing live
- Osterreichring 2016: A decent bit of drama building to a dramatic finish.
- Interlagos 2016: A rarity in an exciting full wet race in the modern Turbo-Hybrid era. Also a clinic by Lewis.
- Baku 2017: Dramatic and competitive, a decent blast of a race
- Shanghai 2018: Ditto above, possibly the best race last year IMO.

Interesting that you picked so many races from the past three seasons, most of us here would probably mention only one or two races in the past 15 years. What do you think of F1 now compared to when you first started watching?

Having to pick from years I've watched live rules out some due to scheduling. Machines aren't as impressive in some sense. Also seems like there has been a clear break between the upper class of Merc, Ferrari, and RB to a lesser extent than the rest. The midfield is definitely exciting, but there is less excitement around race wins, as you are even less likely to see an outsider push for the win.

Yes that one was good too! I love rain races they are really fun to watch because everything becomes so unpredictable. I'll go ahead and watch the video and subscribe

1998 Belgian GP. First F1 hero, seemed to have everything, a perfect race for someone still new to F1

Started watching F1 in 1980. In no particular order:

Adelaide 1986 - Rosberg showing he still had it in his last race and threatening to upset the WC shootout, Mansell’s blowout (how I didn’t wake the rest of the house up with my cheering is unbelievable), then Prost’s perfect managing of his fuel to the flag and Nelson coming soooo close to Title #3.

Hungary 1986 - Boring circuit enlivened by Nelson deciding to treat the Williams FE11 like a go kart for the day

France 1988 - Straight fight between Prost & Senna. Excellent mid games from Nelson whilst being lapped to psych Senna who was then promptly mugged by Prost with a superb piece of opportunistic overtaking.

Monza 1987 - Senna crumbling under pressure and Nelson winning: what’s not to like?
