YouTube BBCode Updated

Post by PTRACER »

The YouTube tag has now been updated and I have altered nearly 10,000 posts to reflect the changes (well the computer did it itself). The full URL is no longer required when you post a YouTube video. The annoyance is finally over!

Example:

[youtube]FOP9-d7wZLE[/youtube]

I have also removed the HQ YouTube tag which hasn't worked for some time.

No worries! By the way, I can't go full screen with the new code on my PC using Firefox, anyone else have this issue?

No go on Chrome either. (Windows 7 64-bit).

Can someone tell me how not copying the full URL is better than copying the video ID only? The way Paul said it made it sound like that and also, over at TBK, I remember the 'youtubeidiot' tag was for the full URL and the plain youtube tag was for the video ID, so you were an idiot if you copied the full link. For me, copying the full link is a shit ton easier than pecking out the video ID from the URL, highlighting it and then copying that so never really understood this lol.

It's a small issue but...

wrong - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsQ_mT5YSvg

versus

right - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsQ_mT5YSvg

The amount of times I've seen the top posted in error (I've done it myself) using the youtube tags and then someone has suggested correcting it or myself, Paul and Jesper have had to manually correct it.

Like I said, it's a small issue but an answer to Sandeep's question.

My question was why PsQ_mT5YSvg was considered easier than https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsQ_mT5YSvg actually. TBK made you use youtubeidiot tags for the latter, ie. full URL. Now it's http vs https though.

Same here on Win8 and Firefox. I tried uploading a new vid, but it had the same problem.

There's some code I have on the V8 site that embeds a fake player/preview onto the forum post, to save on bandwidth and load time, that only loads up the YT player when you click play, I'll dig it out later if you want, it's really useful where you get a situation of a page having 15 video's embedded and it takes ages for all the separate players to load up, I hate waiting 3 minutes for the final video to load its player so I can watch it
I am very sorry if you find my posts long and boring, I like to type and often go off on a tangent.

I suppose I could have just as easily altered the code to accept https:// as it's now the standard, but if someone ended up with an http:// YouTube link that wouldn't work either. Also some people have tried to post http://youtu.be links which just mess everything up completely.

Ian, does that code stop YouTube-heavy pages from freezing as they load?

Sure does.

Now hopefully I've remembered this properly, grab this file off our server and upload it to yours (I think you could put it in the forums directory, I just put it in the route at the time, if you can't save it properly, let me know and I'll zip it up):

Code: Select all

http://www.v8thunderonline.co.uk/forum-youtubeembed.js
Go into ACP > Templates > Edit Template and select overall_header, find the opening <Body.....> tag, directly below it paste:

Code: Select all

<script src="http://www.yoursite.co.uk/forum-youtubeembed.js"></script>
Save the change, then select overall_footer.html

Now find the closing </Body> tag and directly before that, paste:

Code: Select all

<script type="text/javascript">optimizeYouTubeEmbeds()</script>
Save, purge the cache, then go find a Youtube heavy page and see if it works, should get something like this if it does:
http://www.v8thunderonline.co.uk/forum/ ... =18&t=7974

To disable it, if it don't work, just remove the optimizeYouTubeEmbeds() string from overall footer.

While you're at it, add the same to TBK cos that's the site it would work best on with the 50 embeds in the crash video threads

:)
