Any thoughts on Deep Purple and their music?

Lately, I have been listening to some of their music. An interesting blend of hard rock and jazz, blues and classical influences.

The MkII line up of Gillan, Blackmore, Glover, Lord and Paice was their heyday, and by common consent the three albums In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head were their best studio works.

Their sound was always intriguing because of the organ playing of Jon Lord, and his interplay with Ritchie Blackmore's guitar.

I always thought they lacked the essential balls of Sab and Zep. Got all their stuff, tho, Mk. II is the preferred era for me, too. They went through so many different constellations, and always delivered the odd classic, with or without Blackers.

Things really changed when Gillan and Glover joined, and when Zeppelin arrived on the scene, they pointed the way to go.

Great band. I missed their concert with Jethro Tull in 1998 because I got a horse fever.

Even though I dont like Steve Morse, he's the coldest guitarist in the world.
Instead I really like Tommy Bolin even if he wasn't for long with Deep Purple

Although the "MkII" line-up is by common consent their best, my favourite Purple track is "Burn", which featured Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass (and impossibly high harmonies!). This track provided a blueprint for 1980s heavy metal.
