Competing in 15 Indy 500s and winning the race in 1959 and 1962, he managed to finish within the top four up until 1964; also managing to win 26 USAC races.
Ward perhaps holds the unwanted distinction of having raced the most unusual machinery ever to appear in a Grand Prix when he ran a Kurtis Midget at Sebring in 1959.
Ward was also an accomplished Dirt Track racer.
He died today in Anaheim, California after much ill-health.

I was saddened to hear of his death...A picture..(long gone) of him in his car and following that 59 race is one of my earliest racing memories.
If a man can't look at danger and still go on, man has stopped living. If the worst ever happens – then it means simply that I've been asked to pay the bill for the happiness of my life – without a moment's regret. Graham Hill
